Chairman Stuart Guppy writes:
Arrangements were well advanced in February for a memorial event for Dave Hicks, a local fisherman who worked from Newlyn and Mousehole and knew the Fishing Industry, the tides and the seas so well.
He was a great character, Cornish throughout, with a strident voice to match. He held an audience’s attention with what he had to say and no-one could fault or correct him.
Dave died suddenly last year to the great shock of everyone who knew him. It turned out he had kept his illness quiet, preferring not to say anything. A number of close friends and colleagues expressed their wish that his passing is marked by a special event to promote and enhance his life’s work.
He was a great supporter of UKIP and brought many fishermen in Newlyn and Mousehole round to UKIP’s thinking. We had a great deal of support.
A flotilla of Fishing boats was organised 2 weeks before The Referendum in June 2016 and about 30 – 40 boats sailed from the harbours along the coast and around Mounts Bay with UKIP and Vote Leave flags fluttering. It was a sight to behold and all of us in UKIP felt very proud.
An evening at The Queens Hotel Penzance on Monday 12th February 2018 was arranged with Mike Hookem, MEP for Northern Region and UKIP Spokesman for Fisheries as the guest speaker. Also contributing to the evening were Mick Mahon, Robert Smith and Deborah Cowley.
But it all went disastrously wrong. After the news broke about Henry Bolton’s leadership or, rather, the lack of, fishermen didn’t want to have anything to do with UKIP anymore, due to the deplorable actions of his girlfriend and citing his behaviour. All those years of hard work by UKIP members over the years gone in a few days.
But we are fighting back. The event is re –arranged for Wednesday 4th April 2018, commencing at 7pm.
Please come along and support Mike Hookem, UKIP MEP, and show the fishermen of West Cornwall that we mean business.
See you there.
