Seven local elections took place last night. UKIP declined to stand candidates in Luton BC – Barnfield Ward and South Lakeland DC – Levens. It’s imperative that we at least run paper candidates if possible, giving the voters a chance to support us. It also benefits to have valuable information for subsequent elections.

No UKIP wins last night, but UKIP made strong gains. In Chichester we took 23.4% of the vote from a standing start.  The Liberal Democrats are losing support across the country, with many of their historic voters seemingly transferring their vote to the Green party.

Their vote stood up in the Liberal Democrat strong-hold of Lewes, however, where Labour also put in a strong showing. There were two seats up for grabs in Lewes last night; the resigning incumbants were Independent and Green, but the Green party slipped into third.

The biggest surprise of the evening is how well the Conservatives seem to have done, increasing their vote in every ward last night. For a party in government to be picking up votes in this way is unusual to say the least, further proof that the Liberal Democrats seem to be coming off the worst for their coalition experience, whilst the Conservatives’ austerity message continues to resonate.
