MARCH POLICY SOAPBOX – UKIP CARDIFF AND DISTRICT BRANCH
This is the first of our new Policy Soapbox newsletters, which aim to provide you with the latest updates on the policy work being undertaken by UKIP in the Welsh Assembly, together with an opportunity to have your say on the issues that matter to YOU.
There are two consultations currently taking place on nonsense legislation being put forward by the Welsh Labour Government – backed by their even nuttier allies in Plaid Cymru!
One is on the proposed expansion of the rubbish Assembly from the current 60 members to 90-odd members. (And some of them are very odd members, said Labour AM Joyce Watson).
UKIP is the only Party which opposes it. I pushed for us to hold a debate on this in the Chamber, in which I declared that there should be no expansion without a referendum. Our own polling is showing that there is little public support in Wales for this expansion (only 32% are in favour). Despite public hostility to the idea, Plaid are enthusiastic (because they love the idea of giving more powers and more members to the Assembly), and Labour and the Conservatives will both back it once the bogus consultation is over. Nobody except UKIP said anything against the expansion plan, and the Conservatives voted with Plaid and Labour against our motion.
UKIP is the only Party IN the Assembly AGAINST more powers FOR the Assembly.
It’s important that we try to influence the consultation. So, if you have a view on this, please tell them what you think and click on the link below to have your say:
The second consultation is possibly even more worrying. This is on the Welsh Labour Government’s madcap plan to criminalise parents who give their child a smack. Labour want to end the defence of ‘reasonable chastisement’, meaning that any parent who smacks their child under any circumstances could be prosecuted.
How will this new law be enforced? Will we have kids testifying in court against their parents? Neighbours testifying (perhaps maliciously) against their neighbours? Is this another step along the Leftist road to a Stalinist state? Where will it all end?
Again, Labour will be backed by their even crazier Leftist bedfellows in Plaid Cymru. The Conservatives are having a free vote on this, which means that half the Tories in the Assembly will be voting in favour of this dangerous nonsense (including local member David Melding). All five UKIP AMs are resolutely opposed to this idea.
Again, UKIP is the only Party in the Assembly trying to put a block on Labour’s crazy schemes.
Once again, it’s important that we try to influence the consultation. So, if you have a view on this, please tell them what you think and click on the link below to have your say.
