Guy Verhofstadt, former Prime Minister of Belguim and “also afterwards a politician”, has decided to put himself forward as a candidate for the Presidency of the European Commission.

To help him achieve this ambition, he has constructed a campaign video. It might not win him the Presidency, but he must surely be granted some sort of accolade for Services to Political Satire for this one.

Meanwhile over on Twitter, Conservative MEP Dan Hannan has been celebrating the video’s release by tweeting “a new series of unintentionally hilarious lines from @GuyVerhofstadt” using the hashtag #VerhofstadtQuotes.

Choice examples include:

“The European Constitution was rejected, not because it was too ambitious, but because it was not ambitious enough”.

“The ultimate consequence of identity thinking is the gas chambers of Auschwitz”

and

“A Europe of nations is a relic of the past”

Verhofstad is currently the leader of the Liberal group in Europe, so Clegg makes a couple of appearances in the video. If anyone has any lingering doubts about the Liberals’ position on Europe, they’ve just been allayed.
