What is humanity?
- i) Humankind – the human race
- ii) Human Nature – the nurture of our “selves”
- iii) Humanity – The sympathy and understanding of others
- iv) Humanitarianism – philanthropy; altruism; ‘do-gooding’
We are all part of that general mass that is termed ‘humankind’. We have been split since the earliest times into discrete communities across the globe, each having its own language, culture and distinctive characteristics. Apparently, these cultural differences are significant. If they were not, there would never have been wars or disagreements amongst the world’s nations. It could be reasoned that each community (nation), having its own territory and its own culture would make it possible for all to live in relative communion one with another. Trading and cultural concourse should have been possible without one community finding it difficult to tolerate another.
History has shown us quite clearly that this has not and will not always be the case. ‘Human nature’, that latent instinct within each single soul, has meant that ‘clashes’ of personality, culture and belief have always bubbled to the surface of man’s psyche. The question of whether ‘nature or nurture’ are ultimately responsible for shaping mankind’s attitude to each fellow man has long been a subject for debate.
Is it true to say that the element of the instinct of the ‘brute beast’ exists within the make-up of every human being? If that is so then why does it become so prevalent in some rather than others? Why is it that some will always find pleasure and profit in raising themselves up to tyrannise over others of their kind? To make their lives less comfortable for reasons of greed or cruelty (whether intentionally or carelessly) without consideration or reflection?
Wars have broken out amongst nations for many reasons. Religious and cultural beliefs; overpopulation – meaning shortage of land or food; exploitation of resources; race replacement etc. Another reason for imposition upon another nation has been exploitation of resources (extant in other territories) to enrich the imposing nation at the expense of the one upon which it is encroaching. Often the imposers cloak their predations under the guise of philanthropic aid and assistance for the nations upon which they are leeching.
Why is it that for some, the acquisition of money and power is all important? To others, a more cultural, libertarian life where sufficient means to sustain a reasonable life provides much more satisfaction.
It must be true to say that without the drive and enthusiasm of those pioneering persons who explore the possibilities and devise ways and means of generating enough wealth for a sustainable economy to exist, mankind generally, would still be living in caves and enduring a subsistence life. Indeed I understand that there are some parts of the World where such lives are probably still enduring. But are those people any less content in their presumed poverty than those whose drive for wealth is causing such angst across the globe today?
There is a fine line between ‘enough’ and ‘surfeit’. For some ‘enough’ is the simple life and anything extra would mean ‘surfeit’. For those for whom ‘enough’ is never quite enough, the drive for more and more leads them inexorably onwards towards the ultimate inhumanity of imposing their will and greed for plunder, oppressively, upon those whose passive natures render them too weak to resist.
Thus, ‘humanity’ (the sympathy and understanding of others) becomes trampled under the chariot wheels of those whose tyrannical instincts have come to override every true tenet of the word.
‘Humanitarianism’ – (true philanthropy and altruism) has been hijacked by the oppressors. The billionaires who cloak their evil designs for world domination under the cloak of ‘do-gooding’. Their megalomania has been given the semblance of respectability by the political facilitators who are content to sell out their own people for a chance to sup at the trough of ‘thirty pieces of silver’ and a place at the ‘top table’
Compare and contrast the New World Order of self-obsessed billionaires with the true philanthropists of times gone by. Those who used their wealth to endow their nations with cultural and architectural treasures that are still with us today, The libraries; the museums; the assembly rooms; the villages with decent housing for their workforce; swimming baths; town halls; schools and scholarships and many other enduring benefits.
No doubt the ‘woke’ fraternity will find ways of denigrating those truly humanitarian personages (whose benefices made such a difference to the lives of many) as being part of the ‘slavery trading’ atrocity or the exploitation of their workers. But all things considered, I know whom I would rather have using their wealth and influence – and it certainly would not be the current crop of billionaires infesting the World with their poison!
All our lives have been made poorer in recent times by the oppressive activities and greedy aspirations of today’s ‘governing species’. Our ‘human nature’ has been grossly undermined by a dangerously malevolent group of human-beings who have lost all touch with the finer points of ‘human nature’ and have become totally incapable of relating to the basic requirements of ‘humanity’ that should distinguish every man from the baser instincts of the ‘brute beast’.
This is where we find ourselves today. Mankind is on the cusp of wholesale disaster. The past year has shown us all that ‘humanity’, in the true sense of the word, has diminished to the point at which each one of us recognises that something is terribly wrong. But none of us really knows exactly how to recover the equilibrium of being able once again to meet each other face to face and converse freely, without feeling that we are somehow transgressing some or all of the government devised decrees. The suppression of our ‘human nature’ and the deprivations of liberty and free will have impoverished us all. It is essential that we find a way back from the brink of the abyss before it is too late!
Hello Frederica. For some reason my computer did not ‘receive’ your post until today – Sun.25th. Never mind.
Others have commented on the situation we find ourselves in now.
I’d like to go back to questions you asked at the start. E.g. Is it Nature or Nurture. Looking at the huge differences between my brother and myself I would answer overwhelmingly NATURE. Nothing wrong with either of us but so different it could not possibly be due to external changes caused by the time lag.
Why do communities/nations/cultures etc go to war why can’t they co-exist. That puzzles me.
It seems that for some individuals enough is never enough. Always they want more.
To some extent that leads to precisely that entrepreneurial spirit that we rightly admire. It’s only by someone taking a risk that discoveries are made and technologies advance. But unfortunately, sometimes, GREED takes over and I don’t know the answer to that one either.
I’ll hazard one suggestion though, about the path we seem to have trodden. The word ‘Democracy’ does not mean the same as ‘Majority Rule’. Can’t prove it off hand but surely Democracy includes concepts of personal liberty and minimum state interference and each individual being responsible for their own decisions within the law. I’ve not put that at all well.
One problem with majority rule is that it can be a stepping stone. Surely there is such a thing as the tyranny of the majority, over the minority.
Pauline the deservedly main event yesterday was the brewing furore over Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings! Rightly so! This matter should be of great concern to us all because it highlights the depths to which our political scene has descended and the complete lack of honour and decency in public life today.
I do know what you mean. Pondering over why we are where we are at this present, is the reason why I decided to write this piece, I confess I am perplexed. There has always been greed for money and power. But until recently, it hasn’t impacted upon so many of us in quite such a sweeping way as to deprive us of our liberty and our right to live freely within the law.
It seems to me that there must be forces of evil at work that we had not previously comprehended. Hence human kind is threatened in a way that previously we have only seen reported. The misery endured by those living under certain communistic or despotic regimes. Now it seems to have spread so swiftly and with such stealth, across the entire World. I find that distinctly frightening. Especially when so many seem not to comprehend that enslavement to totalitarian regimes has almost subsumed us.
We may never recover fully those freedoms that have been removed from us so completely and utterly! Thus it could be (as you suggest) that because so many have been brainwashed into believing and supporting the current tyranny, the ‘apparent’ majority could be said to be tyrannising over the minority (ie those of us who do not buy into the scam!).
2 days now Frederica but I agree with all you have said there. I would only add that these forces of evil that we have not previously comprehended, seem like that Devil and Demons that the Christian Churches used to warn us about.

As far as I can see most of these uber rich philanthropists accrued their wealth through monopolistic corporatist practices. Once they have made a fortune by putting others out of business they crave respectability via legacies/foundations which engage in ostensibly improving the lives of people which they didn’t appear to want to do by paying higher wages and improving working conditions whilst making their fortunes. No doubt many post-war billionaires were able to privatise their gains and socialise their losses onto the state via welfare payments and use of offshoring production and use of tax havens.
Every now and then someone comes along who knows exactly what their game is and tries to break the monopolists up. Teddy Roosevelt was one such person who broke up the Robber Barons in the early 1900s. In doing so he restored entrepreneurial capitalism re-introducing true competition to American industry and commerce.
It may be more beneficial to have far more millionaire industrialists creating wealth in open competition with each other and fewer billionaires despite their philanthropic donations.
Where is our Teddy Roosevelt?
Jake it is hard to think of anyone at present who might fit the Teddy Roosevelt description! The current crop of Uber-rich – designated as ‘philanthropists’ do not come close to fitting the dictionary description! Hiding their megalomaniac ‘rule the World’ beastly instincts under a cloak of so-called philanthropy is now beginning to show threadbare. In truth most of those we all discuss with such vigour, currentlly, are more akin to dangerous fiends than true philanthropists! ‘Power over people’ is a heady drug and like all drugs can become habit forming until the craving drives the addict ever further down into the pit! The best that I can wish for those that fit the current narrative of ‘philanthropic’ dangerous fiends is that the pit that awaits them is suitably deep and full of something extremely hot and bubbling!

Thank you Lisa. I agree with PhilO’Sophical too! The brainwashing, that has been done so stealthily and completely. staggers me as well. The cashier in the supermarket told me today that when they allow masks to be left off she plans to keep wearing hers!!!! I despair!
I think you will find in the fullness of time that muzzles, those badges of serfdom, are here to stay.

You are right Victor. I don’t think that people realise at all that they have been ‘conned’ into relinquishing their freedom. I am constantly shocked to the core at the manifestations of the authoritarianism that has overtaken this country and the way in which the police have so easily morphed into the government’s Stasi.
I saw a video last evening of a quantity of police who surrounded a man drinking coffee on a park bench in London. When he challenged them saying he was doing nothing wrong, they floored him and the rest formed a cordon around him outward facing so that the watching heckling public could not see what was happening to the guyon the ground. The crowd began to chant. All were taking videos clips. The police got the man up and moved him away (still cordoned off from sight). Shortly afterward a whole caravan of police vans turned up -sirens blaring! – and disgorged another quantity of police officers to swell the ranks! I felt I could be watching some film of life in the old Communist bloc! I have tried to re-find the link this morning but it seems to have disappeared!!!!
You are quite the curate’s egg, Harry. It seems we share a similar history up to and including hardship in early childhood, although it wasn’t seen then as hardship. The communal relief that war was over meant, as the saying goes, ‘mustn’t complain; there’s plenty worse off.’
But a common start has not produced common views. For your long foreseen emergency, I would substitute ‘long planned,’ going back to Gramsci and the Frankfurt School. This plandemic is the final push.
Likewise you believe the government has shielded most from job loss; whereas I would say they have caused it, and far worse, with their utterly ineffectual masks and imbecilic lockdowns, useless PCR tests producing hysteria over case numbers that weren’t, and knock-on isolations; the list is endless.
Yes, in times of emergency governments take extra powers; so they do. But in most emergencies governments will want to call on all available expertise, all hands to the pump, and would welcome every expert view to be weighed, not use blanket suppression and vilification of decent learned people who point out the Emperor has no clothes.
So all things considered, they have done, and continue to do an appalling job; it has been so illogical and ill-informed that a cynic might believe they are being directed (often without even knowing it – the idiots most politicians are) by an international alliance of unaccountable bodies and billionaires, with their own interests and agendas, and our worst interests, at heart.
I agree there will be an economic crash, but that is being engineered as a precursor to digital currencies controlled by the elite and the sheeple controlled by their digital passports (the Chinese social credit scheme, applied to the world in spades.) Although I live in hope that the latter can be stopped.
Oddly I do agree over the evils of the EU, but I would say the French are doing what they always do and look after themselves to the exclusion of all others. Would that we might do the same occasionally.
And on the future, again I agree; messy won’t be the half of it. But I can live with it, for the time I am granted left, but I dread what life my grandchildren will have to endure.
Absolutely well said PhilO’Sophical! I agree with everything you have said. Your comment is exactly how I would have replied to HA if I didn’t make it an absolute rule not to bandy words with trolls! (Even though he does occasionally surprise us with some sensible utterances!)
Most of us of a certain age will resonate with that illustration of the lives of our parents and grandparents. They knew real hardship but in those times the State was in no position to ‘nanny’ people in the way that it does today. People simply ‘got on with it’! The suggestion made that impoverishment means purely financial, is not how I view the case. We have been culturally ‘impoverished’ by this dictatorial, draconian Big Brother State. It has taken it upon itself to deprive us all of the means to use our own common sense and logic to order our lives. It is engineering a system whereby we will be forced into having every decision for our daily existence made by those in ‘power’!

We have become a nation that has never endured hardship. My parents and grandparents were bombed out of their home. My grandparents lost friends and siblings to the flu epidemic. My grandfather’s face was hideously disfigured by mustard gas.
My father came back from WW2 to a life of poverty which lasted for half of his lifetime.
However, since that time, things have only improved, we are indeed the lucky generation. Never before has this happened in the UK.
All thanks to NATO and nuclear weapons. (No country with nuclear weapons has ever been attacked by another.)
Now there is a little glitch with the covid epidemic.
I am one of the older ones that remembers a little hardship in my childhood.
However there’s lots out there that never experienced this.
So they whinge.
We are facing a global emergency that has been long foreseen.
It has involved minor inconvenience for most, the government has shielded most of us from job loss. (Unlike in some third world countries.) In times of emergency,all governments take extra powers.
With hindsight (a jolly fine thing) one can criticise the government’s response but all things considered, they haven’t done too bad.
The worst may yet to be to come when furlough ends and there may be an economic crash, negative equities and job losses. The debt will be to pay off, there may be massive inflation (the traditional way for government to get rid of debt.) Plus we have the evil EUSSR/the French trying to engineer our downfall.
So reserve your tears for later. Life has been easy to date, the future could yet be messy.
