The green zealots in the MSM didn’t even notice the irony! As a monument to utter idiocy the front pages of today’s  print editions cannot be beaten. Furthermore, the headline for yon compilation wins top spot for supreme, subliminal manipulation by clever juxtaposition of words: “Newspaper headlines: ‘Hell on Earth’ and Tories’ green policy ‘retreat’. “(link). If only the dastardly Tories had implemented green crappery much sooner! When we have all scrapped our cars and ‘gone electric’ such fires will never happen! “Steely Starmer”, labelled thus in the title of an opinion piece in The Times (link, paywalled), will surely make it so!

To get the full flavour of the involuntary irony displayed on this morning’s print front pages I’ve taken screenshots of the worst offenders – enjoy:

Words, as so often nowadays, failed me! I wonder if and how the Labour bigwigs will get to grips with the damage Net Zero is inflicting on their beloved ‘hard working families’. It’s not just about Rhodes burning, it’s about this reaction, reported in The Times: “Tories will ditch green policies to win voters” (link, paywalled). How unfair by the Tories: reacting to a problem in order to keep their majority! They should simply roll over and let the left wing of the Uniparty win. Instead:

“Rishi Sunak is planning to hold firm on net-zero goals while delaying or ditching a host of measures that would impose direct costs on consumers, as he comes under pressure from the right of his party to rethink Britain’s climate commitments. After the Conservatives’ unexpected victory in last week’s Uxbridge & South Ruislip by-election, there are tensions in both main parties about the cost of environmental policies […]” (link, paywalled)

Well, either Net Zero is a national goal which the Uniparty must strive for, to the detriment of their voters – or it is another political playball which is deflating in front of our eyes. Here’s the first weaselling-out by none other than JRM who was “[…] calling yesterday for a delay to the 2030 ban on sales of new petrol and diesel cars and the end of green levies on energy bills. […] Having a long-term ambition for net zero is different.” (link, paywalled).

Is this the first sign of a politician daring to mention that the Net Zero emperor is nekkid? As for Sunak – oh, how ‘sources’ were busy yesterday, dripping their spin into the open ears of The Times’ reporters! See this:

“[…] one person who has worked closely with the prime minister on the issue said: “He’s just not interested in it. He’s not opposed to it — he’s just not interested.” Allies of Sunak insisted that Britain was leading the world on climate measures, but one said: “The PM thinks we’ve got to take the public with us on this. You can’t impose on people.” (link, paywalled)

Blimey: ‘you can’t impose on people’? Why did nobody tell that to BJ and the SAGEs during the covid years? Also, I detect a supercilious attitude in these remarks, as if ‘we the powerful’ can impose or not, as we wish, because ‘we’ll be exempt from those impositions’.

Worse, in my opinion, is that those charmed Westminster denizens, the mandarins and MSM editors, know full well what they’re doing. It’s now even dawning on the current crop of Tory MPs. Nick Timothy, writing his commentary for the DT, produced this click-baity headline”

“Politicians have lost faith in politics. This explains the state we are in – Our MPs have voluntarily handed their powers and responsibilities to quangos, bureaucrats and judges” (paywalled link)

He describes nicely what we’ve been debating here on this site for years: the extra-parliamentary powers handed by governments to NGOs and the judiciary. I wonder if the Labour wing of the Uniparty will try to reverse this trend or if they’re happy to hand over even more of their power to those entities. After all, if one’s a newly elected 25-year old MP, how much practical experience can one bring to the political table, to take on those powers … just ‘speaking truth’ to them won’t work.

Meanwhile, our good old Sacred Cow is again in the news. The Times reports that “GPs consider strike that could shut surgeries for a week” (link, paywalled) – and why not! Surely what’s sauce for the consultants goose must be sauce for the GPs gander, no? There’s a ‘statement’ by the LibDems, providing a perfect example of how to make people accept an outcome worse than the status quo: “The Lib Dems are calling for a new right for patients to see a GP within a week or 24 hours if in urgent need.” (link, paywalled).

Wasn’t it possible in ye olden days to see a GP on the same day? Weren’t we next reassured that GPs had to give appointments within 48 hours? Am I misremembering? Will “Steely Starmer” (surely better than “Kneely Starmer”!) and his lot support the GPs? After all, it was Labour’s Aneurin Bevan who claimed that he’d stuffed gold down the throats of GPs to make them agree to the birth of the Sacred Cow.

I leave you with ‘news’ showing the rock bottom now reached by our MSM: “Snake on a train causes passengers to flee in chaos – Orange reptile is found on Shipley to Leeds service” (paywalled link). The photos are lovely – but there’s not even the scintilla of an attempt at identifying that snake: a harmless corn snake. While the ill-educated train passengers may be excused for ‘fleeing in horror’, I am aghast that DT ‘reporters’ are apparently incapable of checking out the interwebz. How … disappointing.

That’s all I have for today. Perhaps we ought to open a book on which ‘issue’ Labour will go for in their election campaign: saving the Sacred Cow or implementing Net Zero at all costs. Have a good day.
