Sir,
Don’t trust me – I’m a doctor who would kill!
In a poll of 29,000 British Medical Association members, ‘50 per cent of doctors and medical students believed medical professionals should be able to prescribe life-ending drugs for patients’, while ‘39 per cent of respondents opposed the suggestion’ and 11 per cent ‘were undecided’, prompting the speculation that ‘the shift in opinion could lead the union to drop the opposition it has held since 2006’ (‘Half of doctors support use of life-ending drugs’, Telegraph, October 9, 2020).
28,986 BMA members responded, and John Chisholm, chair of the BMA medical ethics committee said it was ‘important to be clear from the outset that the survey was not a policy-forming exercise. The BMA’s policy remains opposed to assisted dying in all its forms’ – which policy would ‘only change should members at the BMA’s annual representative meeting … vote to do so.’ He also noted differences in responses to the proposal to allow ‘eligible’ patients to kill themselves compared to the proposal to directly kill them; on the latter, there was a majority against, with 40 per cent believing ‘it should be opposed’, 7 per cent were ‘undecided’, 23 per cent ‘neutral’ and only 30 per cent believed the BMA ‘should be supportive’.
When asked about ‘their personal view’, only 37 per cent were ‘supportive’, 46 per cent ‘opposed’ and 17 per cent ‘undecided’; and ‘on their willingness to actively participate’, even fewer – 26 per cent – said they were ‘willing to actively participate in some way in the process’, 54 per cent ‘said no’ and 20 per cent ‘were undecided.’ Significantly, too, ‘doctors in some specialties such as anaesthetics, emergency medicine, intensive care and obstetrics & gynaecology tended to be generally more supportive’, while ‘those in specialties including clinical oncology, general practice, geriatric medicine and palliative care tended to be generally more opposed.’ (see here).
It is interesting, in the midst of a deadly pandemic with no vaccine as yet in use, that the BMA should poll its members on assisted suicide. One would have thought they would be more concerned about saving life; but if there has been a ‘shift in opinion’, to what can it be attributed? To reports that legalising assisted suicide with ‘strict safeguards’ is merely a ruse to ‘get a foot in the door’, as one Irish right-to-die campaigner recently admitted (here)? That once legalised, more and more categories of patients would be allowed to receive this amazing boon, including the mentally impaired (here)?
Or to the news that the number of ‘ordinary’ suicides increase wherever assisted suicide is legalised; to the news that ‘life-ending drugs’ can lead to a painful and protracted death?
A cynic might suggest that ‘opinion has shifted’ among medical practitioners who support ‘the right to die’ not despite but because of all these factors: that they are anxious to legalise it so the general public can be put to sleep before they public wake up to these inconvenient truths.
But if opinion has shifted for less cynical reasons, then doctors should inform patients of their stance; if they are in favour of this lethal ‘patient choice’ they should also give us the choice to consult a doctor who believes in saving life, not ending it.
Respectfully, Ann Farmer

Sir,
Because of fundamental differences of opinion on the vexed question of European Union I ceased to be a member of the Conservative Party in 2001, whilst still a Conservative MP.
For the past 20 years I have harboured thoughts of re-joining, but not if it transpires that, post Brexit, British subjects will still be living under the proverbial sword of Damocles in the shape of the iniquitous European Arrest Warrant which can be served on any one of us without any necessity to provide even the least shred of evidence that we have indeed committed an offence.
As for the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), nowhere in it is there included an equivalence to the British law of Habeas Corpus which has been our protection against state-inspired coercion and our guarantee of individual freedom since 1679.
Respectfully, Christopher Gill

Sir,
Isn’t it remarkable that the Johnson-Hancock regime is trying their utmost to keep us all indoors, no demos, no visits to pubs where we might voice our dissatisfaction just at the time when the deadline for ‘deal or No Deal’ is only days away?
Isn’t it also remarkable how the MSM are swamping their pages with more and more Covid-News, all irrelevant, all regurgitated without questions asked so that they have ‘no space’ to report on what is going on in Brussels?
Must one be a hard-core conspirationalist to wonder if there just might be a purpose to this ‘exercise’ which smacks of softening us up to accept a Brexit sell-out because Johnson and the government “can’t hear us” because they’ve muzzled us up, literally and figuratively?
Respectfully, Jack Russell
Look for The Great Reset. Most of it looks like the plot formulated by a Bond villain but it is real! –

That’s the best explanation yet of the misery yet to come. Thank you Lindsay.
Here’s a scientific item that takes the FEAR out of Covid – (By the way the epidemic is over although our government would rather it was not…… but why?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJq8MBgYJ4Q
Lisa and Pauline. I put the link on to the great reset launch highlights to Harry Again who flagged up that I’d not attached it to my original post.
Thank you Ceri.

The Great Reset Launch Highlights.
How is it possible that so many people are walking blindly into this unelected dictatorship who are clearly completely insane.
Well Ceri, Having heard references to the “Reset” several times in recent months I watched this video with interest. But….I still dont know what on earth it means!!!! It seems to have been aimed specifically at those who already know what it means. The rest of us are still in the dark. Or…..maybe I am just too thick to understand it anyway!!!
Christopher Gill re EU Arrest Warrant :
I state with 100% confidence that this Govt will keep us shackled to the evil EAW and the criminal (in) justice system that goes with it. They will do so allegedly as part of the bargaining process . But the real reason is that they want to, they are determined to. I wrote to Steve Baker and my own MP putting to them the evils of the EAW; their replies showed they did not want to understand. Steve Baker merely said parrot fashion that we need to cooperate over crime blah blah. Indeed but that was not the point.
Torquil Erikson says we need to amend the 2003 Extradition Act as well. But they wont; the last few months have shown how much they care (not) about our civil liberities.
Christopher Gill was an exceptionally rare and principled Tory MP. We all owe him a great deal of gratitude for his tireless and committed work to restore our national sovereignty. If sufficient Tory Party constituency associations up and down the country had selected PPCs of the calibre, and integrity of Mr Gill we would have been out of the EU by now. Tory constituency associations for 30 years or more have badly let down this country and their own members/voters by selecting and continuing to tolerate those MPs who would take us down the federalist road.
Always a delight to read Mr Gill’s commentary. Thank you indeed.
Well yes Jake. The Tory, oh I beg their pardon, Conservative Party machine is corrupt. Aren’t ALL Party machines equally so? Isn’t that something like what happened to Ukip? Or at least it was moving towards becoming just another political party with an NEC etc.
Nigel Farage avoids that situation. Unfortunately though, it seems we are stuck with it.
Sorry Pauline I disagree with you here, the party NEC is there to represent the members and keep the party leader in check. Don’t forget the NEC/governing body is made up entirely of the membership of that party and are subject to election, and members of the party have full voting rights and have an input in policy formation. Parties which do not have an NEC or Board or call it what you like such as The Brexit Party, are not really democratic in the true sense of the word, and those who pay their annual subscription every year (registered supporters as in the case of TBP) have no voting rights and have no say in the formation of policy and also have no say as to who the leader should be. You made reference to UKIP, and it was Nigel Farage himself who decided that the party should have an NEC. No party leader can have their cake and eat it. Given the choice I would want to be a member of a party which is democratically run, as opposed to one that is not. No party leader should be preaching on democracy and democratic reform when their own party is undemocratic in nature. The new Heritage Party led by David Kurten has a board and will eventually have an elected an NEC, and will have a membership data base, and the members will be able to form local branch associations etc etc etc.
Ok Colin.Things MAY have changed at different times.
What I remember quite distinctly is that when I was a member but did not attend annual conferences I had NO vote for NEC membership. The NEC then made decisions which I only heard about after the event.
My main point being that ONLY if a member was able and willing to travel many miles and stay away from home for several days, only then did that member have any say in party policy.
I’m quite sure that I was attending to my email and the Ukip website at that time.
These are some of the reasons I ceased paying my membership fee.
I was a committed member and officer in a conservative association back in the noughties and our problem was central office, not the association. It was far too easy for central office to ultimately dictate out PPC choice, ignoring any local input. The whole mess starts right there
Imho.
I take your point Alan. Central Office has been ruthless in parachuting their candidates into safe seats etc. But I do think that a determined association still has the right to refuse to select and reselect an MP should they choose to do so.
Cameron did much harm in foisting his new left liberal intake of candidates onto associations I believe.
The other principled option is, like yourself, simply throw in the towel. Our local Conservative Association is struggling like mad to get council candidates and activists. They have lost many good activists over the last ten years due to Tory mischief over Brexit, mass immigration and same sex marriage. No sure but I thought Cameron wanted to remove the right of associations to select their PPCs. Will have to check up on that one.
Re the B.M.A. Poll. Worse than ‘assisted suicide’ is probably already here. At the start of the so called pandemic a G.P. from the local health centre rang me. Amongst other questions she ‘invited’ me to have a D.N.R., Do Not Resuscitate, note on my medical records.
We have probably all seen cases where children were prevented from receiving possibly life saving treatment.
According to Dr. Vernon Coleman life sustaining fluids and nourishment are sometimes not continued.
“…she ‘invited’ me to have a D.N.R., Do Not Resuscitate, note on my medical records…”
£$%%^&*()!
I very sincerely hope you didnt assent. The likes of us are needed .
Of course not mary.
At the time I had not heard the term CPAP but I did know that paramedics carried equipment to give oxygen enhanced gas through a mask. So I talked about that.
She then rattled on about ‘ventilators’ and them not doing much good in the ‘Fight’ against the dreaded virus.
Probably that particular G.P. was simply ignorant rather than evil.
It is frankly incredible how people like us who are not medically trained, have more sense and better info, than those that are.
I am shocked that D.N.R. was even suggested. I hope you gave him/her short shrift.
The Hippocratic Oath being replaced by the Hypocratic Oath?
It does not matter what doctors think, this is a matter reserved for society as a whole. I would suggest that giving life ending drugs is not a medical procedure at all.
It is disgusting that this has even been raised at a time when “The NHS” is supposed to be under so much pressure.
Ally this with the recent DNR scandal and that death certificates appears to be now just a paper exercise formality one could be forgiven for thinking that they are out to get us.
Many of our previously esteemed professions seem to be in some kind of freefall at the moment.Still the lawyers once isolated by the contempt of the public must be now enjoying the company.
Jim R. What a lot of thoughts you have raised in my mind. I’ve always assumed Hippocrates was an ancient Greek philosopher even before the time of Socrates and Plato. Wasn’t it Hippocrates that first insisted medicine should ‘do no harm’. How it all got twisted under the Roman Church. And was actually taken on by the wise women, ie ‘witches’.
Death certificates a paper exercise, signed by only one person and pathologists excluded from establishing the actual cause of death.
Yes. So much for our esteemed professions.
Assisted Suicide:
Given the pressures of the lockdown, people struggling financially to survive and resulting desperation of some, is this likely to become a way out for those so inclined?
Gates & Co. must be frothing at the mouth in anticipation of the fulfilment of their evil dreams.
Jack Russell. It seems to me that Billy Bunter and his Junta are deliberately trying to crush our spirits. In South Wales RESET posters are appearing on the sides of bus shelters. Very sinister indeed.
RESET?????
No I can’t find what RESET means either. Googling was no help there.

As expected Gates is at the root of it.
I live in a rural part of West Wales. What the f… is “reset”?
Amazing Polly explains well. here is one of her youtubes explaining it

There is also a US presenter Rosa Koire who explains agenda 21
Mary. Thank you for that link re The Great Reset. Not seen that one before.
