Mud, glorious mud: beloved by the MSM mudslingers
Firstly: the ‘housekeeping’, i. e. the customary notification of the product of our Westminster Press: “Newspaper headlines: ‘No cash for repairs’ and Starmer’s tax pledge” (link). Nothing new then. So I’ll look instead at a political scandal in Germany, in Bavaria, to be precise, because it provides both a beautiful contrast to our tired political scene and a lesson about MSM and political pundits being the same everywhere, be i Westminster, be it Berlin.
The political scandal in question filled the German papers and kept political punditry at boiling point. It is a perfect example for the German MSM not understanding the mood of their readers, nationally as well as in Bavaria. It documents the hybris of a newspaper, making themselves into judge and jury; the hysteria of the clique of German government politicians and the Berlin MSM, and the ice-cold calculation of a politician, i.e. the Bavarian PM Markus Söder.
Firstly and briefly: some background. Germany is a federation of ‘Laender’, similar to US States. These Laender have the PMs, and there are elections every four years. Bavaria has always been a strictly conservative country. Their governing party, the CSU, is the sister party of the CDU. On the 8th October 2023 the Bavarians will go to the polls and postal voting starts today.
It so happens that there is one other conservative party in Bavaria which governs in coalition with the CSU. This is the “Freie Wähler” (FW), a Bavarian party which so far only stands in Bavarian elections. The leader of the FW is Hubert ‘Hubsi’ Aiwanger. Btw, this is not the AfD and they are not affiliated. Finally, the Bavarian Green Party aims to become the coalition partner of the CSU, the Bavarian SPD and Liberal Party have no chance.
And so to the scandal. At the weekend before last, the German paper “Die Sueddeutsche Zeitung” (SZ) published a report, accusing Mr Aiwanger of having written a disgusting leaflet, making a joke of the Holocaust. In German politics, this is practically a political death sentence. Inevitably, the Berlin MSM and the German government, a.k.a. ‘Die Ampel’ because its a coalition of Red (SPD), Green and Liberals (Yellow), were unisono calling for Mr Aiwanger’s head – six weeks before the Bavarian election. Also calling for Mr Aiwanger’s head was the Sister party of the CSU, the CDU well known for their former head, Ms Angela Merkel.
This however is not the actual scandal. It turned out that the leaflet was written 35 years ago when Mr Aiwanger and his brother were 16 year old boys. It was actually written by Mr Aiwanger’s brother and Hubsi had it in his school backpack because he said he was trying to collect them before worse could happen. He did not tell his school head teacher that his brother wrote this thing – one doesn’t grass up one’s brother. As school punishment he had to write an extra essay on the Holocaust – and that was that. No police were called, he wasn’t thrown out of the school – nothing.
So how did the SZ learn about this? Well, there was this teacher, now long retired, who was a Lefty, affiliated with the SPD. He provided this leaflet – after 35 years! – because he wanted to get rid of Aiwanger. He even asked some of his former pupils to please provide ‘evidence’ of Aiwanger’s terrible Nazi attitude in school. Anonymously.
This didn’t play well at all in Bavaria where people were outraged that a teacher broke all privacy laws by handing in this leaflet. Bavarians also asked why this leaflet and the whole scandal suddenly surfaced after 35 years, when in all the years until now it never seems to have mattered. They observed that the Bavarian Greens would dearly love to become coalition partner in Bavaria …
Immediately, the German government leaders demanded an instantaneous resignation of Mr Aiwanger who happens to be Bavarian Vice-PM, and of course his immediate resignation from his post as leader of the FW. After all, they said, this scandal is damaging Germany’s standing in the world … and never mind that ‘The World’ has been and is blissfully oblivious.
During the past week, more and more absurd accusations were made, always anonymously, for example that someone had seen Hubsi give the Hitler salute, or that he carried “Mein Kampf” in his school backpack. The pack howled that it was unacceptable when Mr Aiwanger said he couldn’t remember exactly what happened, after 35 years. They howled when his brother gave a statement that he, not Hubsi, had written this leaflet.
Meanwhile, the Bavarian PM was carefully maneuvering between providing suitable outrage and electioneering calculations. He knew full well that coalition with the Greens would be out of the question and would lose him the elections – something the Berlin government fervently hoped for.
And so the denouement yesterday. Söder had aske Hubsi to give him answers on 25 questions – ridiculous questions, but something had to be done – and in a press conference yesterday declared that he is now, finally, standing by his Vice PM, won’t sack him, and won’t go for a coalition with the Greens. Oh dear … Political Berlin was not happy …
The German national press and the political pundits ,like our Westminster MSM, regard themselves as sole arbiters. When they finally noticed that, contrary to their expectations, their readers were not having it and stood at Aiwangers side, asking why something that happened 35 years ago was now important, why a lack of memory was so heinous in this case but not in the case of the Chancellor who was allowed to get away with ‘forgetfulness’ when he was involved in several financial scandals as Finance Minister under Merkel, they started ‘editing’ and moderating comment posts.
When the mud simply didn’t stick as expected, the pundits and ‘experts’ bemoaned, day by day, that Mr Aiwanger was declaring himself the victim of a witch hunt, that the Berlin press and the Greens were demanding his head for very transparent political reasons. That was deemed to be unacceptable. Yesterday the Berlin top government politicians accused Mr Aiwanger of playing the victim when he defended himself rather than vanishing from the political scene ‘like a man with contenance’.
Meanwhile, the German comment posters made quite clear where they stood – with Hubsi – and criticised these Berlin political pundits in no uncertain terms. They pointed out that using anonymous accusations form people who suddenly ‘remember’, after 35 years, are useless when these same anonymous accusers had done nothing, either four years ago when the FW became so successful, nor in the years before. They asked how come this transparent attempt at influencing elections was even published by the SZ when even the deeply red&green political magazine ‘Der Spiegel’ refused to publish this material because it was so obviously useless.
It remains to be seen if the calculation of the Bavarian PM, Mr Söder, will bear fruit. He after all waited a whole week and did not stand with his Vice PM when this ‘scandal’ first hit the papers at the weekend before last. Meanwhile, the Bavarian elections circus is in full swing. Unlike here, the politicians are speaking to the people – in beer gardens. Hubsi is getting standing ovation wherever he appears. Bavarian Greens are being booed when they do dare to enter such beer gardens.
The lesson to be learned: MSM and political pundits are the same all over, be it here, be it in Germany. Political mudslingers are the same everywhere, using transparently malicious accusations, unsubstantiated, in the hope that something will surely stick. Politicians here and there are bowing to the mighty pundits rather than their electorate – but clearly not in Bavaria where being unashamedly conservative is something to be proud of.
That’s all I have for today. I wish we had a Hubsi Aiwanger, a FW, and a political scene like in Bavaria where politicians visit beer gardens for their electioneering. Have a good day
I don’t believe this, we have a few days where temperatures are forecast by the Met Office to reach between 30 and 32 degrees centigrade, and the BBC are stating on their online news site that the temperatures will be unseasonably high and that a heat health alert had been issued and which the BBC have put it down to that old chestnut Climate Change. It could be said that this summer the temperatures have been unseasonably low with a lot of rain, but the BBC and its forecasters who have been rueing the fact that this year the summer has been not so good would probably rule that this was also down to Climate Change. If there had been a forecast of weeks on end of high temperatures I might be a bit worried, but in truth it is only going to last until Monday next week when we are told that the mean temperature will return to average temperatures once again. The whole thing is a storm in a teacup and just plays into the hands of political numpties like Sadiq Khan, Rishi Sunak, Kier Starmer and the other 640 time wasters in the House of Commons who feel that the order of the day should be taxing us to the hilt, Net Zero in double quick time, ULEZ zones right across the country, road charging by the mile, and Fifteen Minute Cities as a means of controlling the population and reigning in our civil liberties and freedoms, whilst saying next to nothing about the huge building programme of coal fired power station in China. They can all go and take a hike at the next general election as my vote will go to a party who doesn’t believe in all this crap…..
A week or two in politics. Australian version.

Fun times in Bavaria. Offence archaeology should never include anyone’s teenage years – going too far, defying adult orthodoxy is typical of adolescence for many teenagers – as Söder should have immediately pointed out. Only if the offensive behaviour persists into adulthood is the earlier manifestation relevant. (Nazi uniform wearing Prince Harry will shortly be in Düsseldorf – without criticism from the host country to this year’s Invictus Games. Lol.)
Please do let us know the results on 8th October. I’d like to know if conservatism is in retreat or not in Bavaria at least.
This morning there was an outstanding opinion piece published in ‘Die Welt’. The author – a Bavarian – is a brilliant, ironic, elegant writer. Sadly, it’s not only in German and because of his beautiful new word-creations nearly untranslatable, it is all fiercely paywalled.
He – his pen name ins ‘Don Alphonso’ – described how the current Bavarian opposition (red-yellow-green) were behaving like a drunken woman not being taken to bed by the man they want but were absolutely fine with the FW during the years when the FW was in opposition together with their parties and that they thought Hubsi Aiwanger was wonderful. Oh dear oh dear oh dear!
Yes, I’ll report on the result of that election. Given that Bavarian electioneering takes place in beer gardens, with ‘oa Mass’, i.e. a huge, heavy glass of beer as known worldwide from the Oktoberfest, I think perhaps a certain Mr Farage might like to visit that place and report about how proper conservative politicians enjoy what is true popularity!
Viv……..you’ll be lucky. That certain Mr. Farage is more concerned talking about National Westminster Bank, Coutts Bank, Donald J Trump, and boring us to death about the state of American politics. His programme on GB News has become sleep inducing and should be recommended as a remedy to anyone suffering from Insomnia. Needs to take a reality check, and get out of that studio, kick the ineffective Tice into touch and return to frontline politics by leading a party and bringing all the parties of the centre right under one united campaigning banner to challenge the worse than useless Conservative Party. It will not happen though as he prefers to shout from the sidelines to a fairly limited audience.instead.
Did I hear correctly that Farage is considering travelling to America to cover next years American election? He certainly doesn’t appear to have much time to prepare and promote Reform UK for our GE next year.
Jake, that is what he has been saying of late. The days of relying on Farage doing anything politically in this country are unfortunately over. We have to find somebody else to take over that mantle, and that will not include Richard Tice who personally bores me to tears. I don’t know whether you saw one of my comments last week, but a local councilor in Llanelli defected to the UK Independence Party over the illegal migrant issue and them being housed in hotels. Not to Reform UK, because a substantial number of people out there have never heard of the party, and those who have do not know what they stand for. Even I struggle to understand what they stand for. But everyone is aware of the UKIP brand and what it basically stands for. This defection is perhaps the fillip the party needs to move forward…..
With regard to the present school aerated concrete farce that is splashed over what passes for news sheets these days, just where did this story have its origins, and more importantly why has it been mentioned now and not say eight weeks ago when the school teachers and the like were thinking about their impending seven week holiday. How many school building have fallen down in the past two months and how many children and teachers have been injured etc. And yes of course certain politicians are jumping all over the issue, like Jeremy Hunt who says one day that money would be no object and then in the next breath saying that there would be no new money to sort out the problem. Then we read that some schools might be closed for two or more weeks and the children would be forced to do online learning. I didn’t know concrete structures could be repaired in two weeks, but there you are what do I know. I seem to remember that when I was at Primary School in the early 1960s and Secondary School mid 60’s, quite a lot of the classrooms were large wooden huts and other supposedly temporary structures that sat in one of the playgrounds for years on end, so why can’t that be the solution now. Then I read on one of the papers this morning that the government a few years ago cut the budget for school repairs in half, so could that be the reason why this issue has been raised now and of course within sight of an impending general election. I think this government are the pits and have failed on so many levels, but I want them gone not because an education authority cannot afford to bring in a few mobile classroom huts to house school children safely, but because we still do not have full independence from you know what, do not have full control of our territorial waters and fishing, are unable to secure and protect our coastal borders from unwanted migrants, the NI issue, the fact we are promising endless amounts of monetary aid to Ukraine to the detriment of our own population, depleting our own stocks of weaponry to give to Mr. Z, and the list could go on and on and on. And to cap it all we have the clown of all clowns Mr. Schapps as Defence Secretary…………. (Oh, just one thing Lord Biscuit of Eaton Square I have left this comment today and left one yesterday as well, so Col Aitch doesn’t need to be incarcerated in the Eaton Square Glasshouse any time soon!!
CH- the party calling themselves conservatives are not only incompetent, but also suffering paralysis. Hope that passes, but not likely in the next 18 months. And then they will be gone anyway. Not nuffing is going to happen, especially financial outlay during that time. Then other crowd called the labour party will move in to reduce taxes (heroes) by a smidgen, Then it will be back to status quo. ‘new boss’ same as the old boss. You will have nothing but you wi . . .
Oi! Less of the twice cooked! Eaton Sq is fine by me. Dontchaknow I live in St John’s Wood ole Bean.
The mainstream establishment can’t justify itself at all with facts, so their only weapon is to hide the truth about themselves while throwing mud at their opponents. Attack is their only defence.
Delighted that it is backfiring and hope it starts happening here and everywhere
Another ploy of theirs is ; the establishment are the nazis in essence, but they label as nazi all those who oppose them.
They do it all the time and have got away with it so far because of gullible populaces.
