We, the people, the Brexit voters: be-spelled by a seducer into ‘wrong-vote’

 

Last week ended with the bombshell of Johnson’s resignation – this week starts with the bombshell of the arrest of the former Scottish leader, Ms Nicola Sturgeon: “Newspaper headlines: ‘SNP fraud probe’ and ‘Brits missing in boat blaze’.” (link). The nice and gentle staff at Auntie Beeb probably didn’t want to upset the fine Scottish people by mentioning The Sturgeon in their own headline. Our fine Westminster MSM are not so queasy. The Sun came out with “Nic Nicked” – which is worthy of a tired, early morning chuckle.

It remained for ‘iNews’ to declare that this is the “End of an era in UK politics: Sturgeon arrested, Johnson out in the cold”. It seems our wonderful opinion piece writers will have their work cut out for the next few days because we uneducated peasants need to be told what to think. I use the word ‘uneducated’ advisedly because this is precisely how the Westminster swamp denizens see us. It’s their justification for talking down to us, distorting our history while they go along. 

As expected, after Johnson’s resignation the political columnists were out in force. As expected, their ‘theme’ was Brexit. As expected, the Remainers were quietly jubilant. There was however one particular column in the Sunday Times which took this to a new height. It was by Matthew Syed, headlined:

 “Johnson’s Brexit chicanery has led us into Doublethink Britain –  The nation is trapped in an anxiety dream. We still haven’t faced up to the consequences of Leave” (link, paywalled)

This already set my teeth on edge because the chicanery which we remember so well,  came from the entrenched Remainers who couldn’t believe what had happened: ordinary people not following the lead given by their ‘betters’ in Westminster? Unheard of! Of course there had to be a culprit, and that was Johnson.

Never mind that there were a great many other Leave campaigners, never mind that Remain, in the person of Ms T.May, was firmly in the saddle, cosying up to Brussels in the hope to make Rejoin, so desired by a certain M Barnier (remember him?) a reality. And I’ve not even mentioned the full might of the Remain mandarins of Whitehall … But see the following sentences by Mr Syed which had me fuming, and I’m fuming again just re-reading them. He claims that Johnson (all emphases are mine):

“[…] cast a spell over a sufficient number of Brits to conjure up the most remarkable juxtaposition: the worst decision of the postwar period gaining the largest democratic mandate. […]But what does it say about us that the decision of one man, a proven liar with a poor grasp of details, was able to sway so many on that fateful day?” (link, paywalled)

Note how cleverly Mr Syed weaves together the result of the 2019 GE, giving Johnson’s Tories that 80-seat majority, with the result of the EU referendum. Note how he insinuates that he was also ‘swayed’ …. Note that we, the electorate, must have been ‘be-spelled’ to vote as we did: we, the people, have no agency according to these Westminster pundits. We are only ever being swayed or be-spelled. This means, of course, that the ‘right-thinkers’ in Westminster must do their best to correct our terrible mistakes.

This is why we plebs need ‘guidance’. This is why we cannot be trusted.
I find it interesting that ‘Remain-Rejoin’ no longer looks at their own failures because blaming us voters is their easy way out. The pure arrogance of this thinking is fully on display in Syed’s final sentences. They are ominous:

“Doublethink Britain is trapped in the mental gymnastics of realising we made a terrible mistake while our leading politicians can’t bring themselves to acknowledge it; struggling with the consequences while lacking the courage to face up to them. It is as if we are collectively traumatised by the toxic legacy of Johnson, cowering indecisively while buffeted by the winds of history.” (link, paywalled)

One look across the Channel ought to show even Mr Syed that actually, we’re indeed better off than the EU states. But that is irrelevant to Remain. Note the beautifully formulated sleight-of-hands as Mr Syed tries to make out that he is part of us ‘traumatised’ masses. Note also his indulgence in magical thinking with his description of us ‘cowering while being buffeted by the winds of history’. It’s as if no-one, not we cowering peasants nor the ‘aristocrats’ governing from Whitehall and Westminster, have any agency at all.

Obviously, “something” must be done, and all we need is an anti-Johnson to make things well again, be-spelling and swaying us:

“It is a cruel impasse and a tragic one. Soon, I hope, a politician will rise up to draw a curtain over this sad episode in British history. Until then, Johnson’s shadow will linger over the nation he claims to love, which he has liberally — and with the support of millions of voters — trashed.” (link, paywalled)

And what will yon hoped-for, new be-speller and swayer of us plebs do? Punish and re-educate us millions of voters who helped Johnson to ‘trash’ this country? ‘De-toxify’ this country by cosying up to Ms vdL’s Brussels? Even on re-reading Mr Syed’s column I’m incandescent with fury as he belittles us all while proposing another ‘charmer’ to make us repent, someone to lead us out of this ‘doublethink’ which only he and his co-Rejoiners see. The hypocrisy is beyond belief.

In contrast, there was the Sunday column of a German writer who writes for ‘Die Welt’. The title and summary of his excellent piece is all we need for a comparison (machine translated):

“A country in decline – and without a view of improvement. The German state no longer fulfils its most elementary duties. Respect for the needs and life works of many people is lacking in politics. If this bad mood continues to be ignored, only the AfD will benefit from it.” (paywalled link, in German)

Compare and contrast: a German columnist blames the government – a British columnist blames us, the people. “We” were seduced into ‘wrong-vote’ and are in need of a new seducer. Do those who have sabotaged Brexit from the start: the serpents in Whitehall, wait for such a new seducer to justify their destructive work?

That’s all I have for today. It’s now on record: the Westmisnter punditry regards us voters with utter disdain: too stupid to think, prone to be be-spelled and swayed, incapable of making the right decision – until ”we” vote for the correct ‘redeemer’. Have a good day.
