I’m referring to the DT report on 28-07021, ‘Blackouts Feared if EV not charged at night’. Yes there is spare power generation capacity at night, but not much of it comes from renewables and it will be many years before our depleted fleet of nuclear power stations is replaced. Indeed, the UK’s nuclear power capacity is less than 10,000 MW and falling, while on some days the total solar and wind power capacity is little more than a tenth of that. So EVs will cause CO2 emissions for many years to come and probably well beyond 2030.
Assuming an average of 30 miles per EV per working day (260 pa), then at 0.25kWhr per mile, each EV battery would, require around 7.5kWhr of charge per day, or 248,000MWhr for 33m EVs. That equates to a total EV charger load of 24,800MW spread evenly over 10 hours, or almost 50,000MW if spread over 5 hours. If, as suspected, many of the EV chargers do not have the smart grid features needed to spread charger load evenly over a few hours, then clearly extra generation capacity will be needed.
The PM has seemingly deferred the requirement to replace domestic gas boilers by 2030. He now needs to delay the phasing out of petrol and diesel cars, allowing time for new nuclear plants to be built and commissioned.

I noticed with interest an item in Independence Daily on the 28th of this month, exhorting us to write to our MP’s. As you know, I did this over 2 months ago, and you kindly published the letter, but I still have not received a reply – only an automated response, as experienced by your latest contributor.
In an attempt to elicit a reply from my worthy public servant, I sent him the one below 2 weeks ago inviting him to sign the petition on illegal discrimination against those who have decided, for whatever reason, not to take the vaccination.
Result? No reply.
Unlike Sir Desmond Swayne and Sir Charles Walker, it seems that most of our civil serpents are too afraid or incapable of even holding an opinion on anything, and one must ask, “what is their utility”?
I wrote in a previous letter that our MP for North Dorset proudly quoted in his promo blurb that, “as a former barrister, I am passionately interested in justice”. A bit like saying that, “as a painter and decorator, I am passionately interested in wallpaper”, or, “when I was in year 4 in my primary school I was the monitor in charge of cleaning out the fish tank for Miss Pilling”.
In every message to him I try to remind him of his passion, as with the one below, although I think he is too well entrenched in the public money pit to try his legal skills on the open market; indeed, I wonder how many briefs he was given before he was advised to go into politics? Here’s my latest letter to that MP:
“Dear Mr. Tomlinson,
As I have not received a reply from you since my last message to you, I presume you are extremely busy and wondered whether you had been recalled to the Bar? I have signed the petition and have forwarded this link in the hope that you would do the same? If you have time, please let me know your thoughts on this and the other issues I raised in my last email to you, as I am sure you believe it is important for the elected representative to convey the principles on which they stand to their constituents.”
If only to make your other readers aware of the futility of writing to our MP’s, if you wish, publish that email and be damned!

here’s the letter I sent to my MP on the issue of illegal immigration:
“Dear Ms Whately
This video highlights the colossal failure of the British Government to resolve the problem of illegal immigration across the English Channel from France to Britain.
The people of Britain have suffered greatly under the draconian lockdown measures taken by government over the past 18 months. We are now threatened with forcible vaccinations and/or segregation under totalitarian measures if we do not succumb to the undue pressure being exerted by this tyrannical government. Our mental health is suffering under the strains being placed upon us. Our physical health is at risk because we have been unable to obtain treatments for other medical conditions that have assailed us.
All this because government wishes to exert total power over what was once a free people!
Yet, the illegal migrants continue to arrive and be treated as though they were ‘honoured guests’. They are housed, clothed and fed and given medical treatment at our expense.
We are all completely and utterly sick of the ineffectual efforts of the Home Secretary Priti Patel. Other than ‘Danegeld’ being paid to France (and why would France be inclined to help Britain when it is known that they tried to hinder our exit from the EU?) she has been serially prevaricating about action that should have been taken under the emergency powers that accrue to her administration. She has chosen not to do so. Why is this? Must we all assume that this is done according to government plans that they choose not to share with the people?
Unless something is done very soon, the demographic of Britain will be altered forever. It will be altered in a way that will not necessarily be beneficial to the well being of this land! Do not be sanguine and think that you and your government will be ‘exempted’ from any undue consequences of the lack of attention to the ultimate security of Britain. Security that could very well be compromised by the immoderate allowance of numbers of so-called refugees that should in truth have been seeking asylum in the first safe country that they entered. Having sought asylum they could then have submitted a proper proposal to be considered for migration to Britain.
Your government will bear the responsibility for this situation. In due time, your government will be ousted. It is inevitable that it will happen unless of course you plan to cancel the final shreds of democracy and decency that has up until now characterised the nature of the ‘Mother of the Free’ and assume a total dictatorship. At that point I believe that the Conservative Party will fragment and cease to exist in its current form. People are unhappy with the way that the affairs of State have been handled since 2019. COVID, illegal immigration, financial profligacy and potential dictatorship are concerns that are now coming to the fore!
I await your comments (your comments please as my representative in the House -not the anodyne ‘Party Line’!)

Respectfully Roger Arthur, WE no longer know how to build a cheap series of Nuclear power stations.. My company did much of the electronics the instrumentation and electrical components and decks for the final half dozen… I’m . not even sure if anybody at all knows how to make some of our instrumentation since most of those people retired long ago disappointed and baffled by political and bureaucrat faffing about… Although Wier pump still exists magically..They might take it on, I wouldn’t advise it, noe with al the claptrap of Mother Earth . And the idea of controlling by computer machines and other lash ups makes my blood run cold, I would suggest that 3 Mile island and HS2 might put them off..
I cannot comprehend why not Tidal + H2. It is ridiculously easy. Much is within political control of one kind or another. Obviously everybody an his dog will try to retire on crumbs from the table. Well only politics is to blame.. The problemis the government itself. They’ve created a whole money maker and that has politically to continue come hell or calm weather. ( Silly cow May ) All our friends have one .on the farms.
T.G.S. I’m no expert of course but from what I remember, Roger Arthur is pretty well informed and up to date on nuclear energy.
Good people, Hark to the well established wisdom of the ages: “If we continue to do what we have always done, its very likely that we’ll always get what we’ve always got.”
In other words, recognize once and for all that MPs don’t give diddly squat to what we think, until election time. All of them have office ‘go-fers’ to handle irritating and distracting interjections from the likes of us. We bring them all to life by voting according to the party title. Don’t forget that the party is a corporation, and like any other corporation, the party has security staff. They are called Whips.
Please! Pretty please! Learn that the only two things required of us, the punters, are donations at any time and when the time comes, our votes. Other than those two links we are surplus to requirements.

Mary I have been saying for some time now that I believe the ultimate aim is to remove the vote from the people altogether and install a total dictatorship World-wide! I am going to sign up to UK Column now. This stuff is depressing but knowledge is power so they say! I’m also thinking of joining the English Democrats. Robins Tilbrook seems like he has his head screwed on right and he clearly knows a thing or three about the law!
Just a thought to all those who write to their MP – in your letter is it worth mentioning that if I do not receive a reply (other than an acknowledgement) I will assume you have no objection to me circulating my letter to the Press, particularly to the local paper.
Frederica.I wrote to my MP earlier this week on this issue. I also wrote to him about the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman finding of maladministration by the Department for Work and Pensions regarding the lack of notice we 1950s born women received about our state pension age increase and asking for him to pledge support the recommendations of the Ombudsman. No reply to either as yet but they are on a long summer recess. I had a letter printed in Daily Mail on Monday on the latter issue. Letters in national, regional and local press keep topics in the public eye. You can always request of the Letters Editor that your name and address are withheld if published. MPs loathe unfavourable press.
Ceri well done you for getting a letter printed in the Mail. That was a very worthy topic where many have been short changed! Is it cynical of me to wonder whether they were ok with printing that because the particular topic wasnt so contentious as the COVID or immigration related issues? From what I can see the Mail, like all the rest, is taking the government supplied taxpayers money to brief against the people by way of mass advertisement of scaremongering!
Frederica. The newspapers are also taking in thousands of pounds worth of advertising placed by the Gov. Some would have folded last year without the pages of cruising and overseas holidays being replaced by the Government ads. Still, it’s always worth a go sending in a letter or two. Short, to the point comments, are popular with Letters Editors. One that DM printed of mine was a quickie that, ‘Having read Boris’ plans for the country to go green we are converting our garage into a stable’.
I really like that Ceri! But…. I thought that they were going to stop having animals on the basis that their flatulence and excreta creates unwanted gases!!!! Lol! You might think that someone could have created a vehicle that would run on animal Poo. A bit like a hot bed in the old Victorian gardens. Sorry for my flights of fancy! I think hysteria is starting to creep in!
Frederica. But if humans just eat beans there’ll be even more flatulence. I wonder if anyone that converted a Victorian stable block into garaging is now planning to convert it back into its former as harness room with stables for the working horses plus cover for the wagons.
Ceri It will be interesting to see how things play out! I must put this thought to my cousin. She has stabling and she and her sister run their own business. I can sense a spin off here for transport for themselves and a taxi service for their clients! They can provide employment for a stable hand or two as well!! What’s not to like?
Roger I doubt whether there are many people in government today who have the least part of your understanding of the way the National Grid is working at present never mind the extra drains on its capacity that will be made by large numbers of electric vehicles (and the phasing out of gas boilers)! The very highly paid sheep occupying the green benches on the government side (and undoubtedly no better on the opposition benches) simply are not interested in asking questions of their ‘masters’ at the top of the tree (and I do not necessarily mean those in the Party!!). Neither are they interested in entering into meaningful discussion with those unfortunates who reside in their neglected constituencies. The whole system stinks of malfeasance and cronyism from top to bottom!
Jim you may think it is futile to write to your MP but if everyone did it and their inboxes were full to overflowing every single day, a certain message would get through. If more letters were published around the non-MSM networks such as this excellent site to give both encouragement to those considering writing and to allow what others are writing to be shared more widely. Eventually,I would hope, the MPs themselves might notice that their inaction had been noticed and was being ‘talked about’ publicly!!! Unless ‘they’ take the final draconian step of cancelling all future elections, eventually their jobs will be on the line…..and they will know that the time for their removal could well be nigh!
I think Roger Arthur’s letter about EV’s and the National Grid is excellent. He makes the most important points succinctly and finishes with the obvious remedy let us keep our I.C. vehicles for longer.
