This makes a stench one can live with – unlike that produced in Westminster
Instead of having a proper ‘Silly Season’, with reports of donkeys eating hats in Blackpool or of rural flower shows and ‘wars’ between WI members, there’s an almighty stench of hypocrisy wafting through Westminster. It’s again ‘Sex and the BBC’: “’BBC presenter did nothing wrong’ and ‘the BBC are liars’.” (link), now looking like a family drama played out on the MSM front pages.
Holding my nose, I waded into this particular swamp, for two reasons. One is that the whole issue is now dominated by lawyers, the other that the name of that person is still kept secret. Isn’t it absolutely amazing, extraordinary and stunning that, after all this time, this secret is still kept? That not one of the thousands who by now surely must know, at least inside the BBC, haven’t leaked it at all? What does this tell us about the leak-driven gossip ‘culture’ in Westminster?
According to the ‘latest’ in the DM, MPs ‘threaten’ to name yon BBC presenter in the HoC (link). Well, they have immunity so the presenter’s lawyers cannot touch them. In other reports we read that BBC staff who ‘know’ are scared to say anything because of ‘privacy laws’ and because yon presenter is ‘lawyered up’.
Then there’s claim and counterclaim, presented by more lawyers, e.g. that of ‘the young person’ stating that nothing unlawful happened (link). Here’s the paragraph in the DT’s report – relevant for one other point (all emphases are mine):
“The lawyer’s letter sent on behalf of the young person, who is being represented by a top law firm in central London, said: “For the avoidance of doubt, nothing inappropriate or unlawful has taken place between our client and the BBC personality, and the allegations reported in The Sun newspaper are rubbish.” The letter went on to claim that the young person had told The Sun on Friday evening that there was “no truth” to the story.” (paywalled link)
So did The Sun’s editors simply run with the parents’ story because it made for juicy reading on the weekend? Why are mum and step-dad so concerned now? Why is everybody talking about ‘a child’ when the ‘young person’, now 20, was 17 at the time in question? After all, politicians of a certain persuasion campaign to give the vote to 16-year-olds, so surely it’s ok for a 17-year old to exchange sex photos with someone else? It’s certainly nice that a ‘top London lane firm’ represents yon ‘child’ – ‘for free’, I suppose, and they picked up this case from the goodness of their hearts …
The most important question however is this: are we all equal before the Law when ‘prominent’ people can afford to ‘lawyer up’ and thus prevent news of misdeeds to come out? Why is it that, on the one hand, lawyers can insist on non disclosure agreements for their clients – those with enough money to afford them, that is – while ordinary people cannot even defend themselves against malicious ‘stories’ the papers gossip about?
What does this say about our ‘ruling classes’ which clearly can keep secrets when it suits them but feel free to ‘leak’ them to the nation via the MSM or in the HoC? Do I need to mention Mr Farage’s banking issues? The MP who smeared him was, btw, ‘in the papers’ some years ago because he emailed photos of his lower body, clad in y-fronts. The ‘Sex and the BBC’ issue is so disgusting not because of ‘sex’ but because of the hypocrisy and double standards on display.
I leave you with two lovely ‘Silly Season’ non-news stories. They’re both in The Times’ ‘Health’ section. One is a chatty interview-cum-plug for a book , headlined:
“Allergies and weight gain: it’s all about the gut” – Your microbiome affects all aspects of your health — and modern living has a huge impact on it, the surgeon Dr James Kinross tells Anna Maxted” (link, paywalled)
Far be it from me to take issue with such important themes like ‘eco’, ‘sustainability’ and the ever recurring point made in such articles that it’s all our fault. I do take issue with this statement:
“Kinross notes that in the 1940s farmers realised that if you gave livestock antibiotics they got fatter faster. “The reason that works is because when you decimate the gut ecology you promote inflammation, and that changes insulin resistance and then you gain weight.” (link, paywalled)
I seem to remember that in the 1940s there was a war on, with huge numbers of wounded needing treatment. The ‘wonder drug’ against infections had only just come into use: penicillin, and was more precious than gold dust. But farmers used this drug, nearly unobtainable even for wounded soldiers, thus kicking off all those allergies? Really? Was it too much work for the interviewing lady reporter or her subeditor to take a quick glance at this timeline of antibiotics? Perhaps the 1940s are now utterly ancient history so whatever is said regarding these years is just ‘narrative’ and doesn’t need to be checked.
Staying with weight gain, the other report in The Times’ Health section has an exemplary click-bait headline: “Watchdog examines ‘link between weight-loss drugs and self-harm’.” It is utterly shameless because the very first paragraphs state:
“The European medicines watchdog is investigating reports of suicidal thoughts among some people who inject themselves with weight-loss drugs. Health authorities in Iceland said that drugs containing semaglutide or liraglutide for weight loss had been linked to thoughts about self-harm or suicide in three patients.” (link, paywalled)
Blimey – the editors must have been desperate to fill their pages if they’re reduced to publish this guff! However, I find it intriguing indeed that the incidence of three (!) Icelanders with ‘thoughts’ of self-harm is now being investigated by the EU. How many patients, across the EU, the UK and USA have reported ‘incidents’ (I am being extremely polite!) regarding the covid jabs, without the ‘medicine watchdogs’ touching those reports with bargepoles?
That’s all I have for today. The hypocrisy and the double standards stink to high heaven. And you wonder why I’m becoming ever more cynical? Have a good day.
After GBNews reported that one in six people polled already knew the identity of the presenter, I had a quick look and found the consensus name immediately. If I catch sight of the BBC by accident I get nauseous, so I cannot judge but I think ‘high profile’ and ‘star’ are rather over egging the pudding.
Not having watched Al Beeb TV for years, I’m afraid I haven’t got a clue … but we believe of course all those ‘presenters’ who went on social meejah to declare it wasn’t them, of course we do!
Perhaps someone will use PMQ tomorrow and drop that name in the HoC unless he’s outed overnight.
An interesting footnote: comments are disabled across the board of the MSM for this story.
Thank you Viv, for your comment about penicillin. I remember once saying to my mother ‘Why didn’t they give penicillin to daddy for his bronchitis? In stead of which they gave him electric shock treatment for his so called depression, which was a realistic appraisement of his experience of the first world war’.
That scruff pot Zelensky has hit out at NATO decision not to have a time frame on Ukraine’s membership of the organisation as being absurd. I think we all know the reason why he wants immediate membership of NATO because he wants the bloc’s troops on the ground in his country and air cover, which undoubtedly will set the USA and Russia in direct conflict with each other which in all probability will go Nuclear. Its absurd that he thinks it absurd that we do not go down that line, and clearly the man is an idiot and a bigger idiot than our own prime minister and the president of the United States, who are both bad enough. I think it has been made clear to him many times, that the timeframe on Ukraine’s membership of NATO will be dependant upon the end of the war between Ukraine and Russia and not before. And even then it would not be a good idea at all, because the present conflict has largely been caused by the eastward expansion of both NATO and the European Union. What part of this do politicians the world over not understand. They are apparently all as thick and naive as each other. Hopefully within the next year or so the nearest Sunak will get to playing wargames, will be playing with his toy soldiers in his living room because he will be out on his ear……
Not mentioned here but related to the BBC, general hypocrisy and Brexit. What person would fit into all those categories and is also extremely arrogant, untalented, a waste of time, overpaid and who thinks he is god’s gift to humanity…………..errrr, now who can it be. Yes, you’re right its Gary Lineker. It has been announced that last year he was the BBC’s highest earning ‘Star’. Star, excuse me what do you mean Star……. Star of what exactly? He is the presenter of Match of the Day on Saturday………..big bloody deal, and for that he is paid the princely sum of £1.35 million. If anyone should be labelled grossly overpaid it has to be that particular oik. Thank goodness I am not contributing monies to this utter waste of space. Defund the BBC, and get rid of….permanently.
Yes colin defund the bbc. So why did you suggest I should accept their free tv licence? Do you really think I am so thick as to ‘take comfort’ from their garbage?
Pauline……I’ve never suggested anything of the sort, but what I did say everyone is different and may have a different point of view over the BBC and if having a TV gives you pleasure etc, then so be it carry on using it if it is free. Personally I haven’t had a TV since 2016 and have no intention of getting another one even when I reach that age when the licence may become free.
In Britain we are suffering – there is no need to expand on that statement.
It is always worth knowing if you are being victimised or in the same boat.
Talking to a Latvian friend, I asked about the current conditions in that country.
– Russia. You have a common border – do Latvians worry about invasion or attack and so forth? You showed me videos of non Russian tanks and artillery transported on Latvian motorways.
— No all is calm.
– What is unemployment like – say compared to GB?
— Worse. Many older people 40s plus, cannot get work – ageism. Younger with little experience, the same.
– Inflation?
— If you think food prices in GB are going through the roof, they do not compare with Latvian price rises – gave many examples.
– what about heating and such. More or less 100 pct of gas comes from Russia?
— all is ok on that front, but the price has gone through the roof. Come Winter – who knows?
– Immigration from Ukraine?
— Ukrainians are flooding here but abusive and take the place as though they own it. Our second language is Russian. For most Ukrainians, Russian is either first or second language. Even Zelonski has trouble speaking Ukr(!), but they refuse to use it shouting abuses instead.
Another thing, Latvia like Britain is being flooded by ‘black people’. It is, or was a white Roman Catholic, country.
I’d be interested in people’s views from other common market countries. From conversations, Spain and Italy are disasterific. Holland has just had its parliament fall, and Belgium . . hasn’t had much of a parliament for decades. Jermany, maybe Viv can fill in – with no energy = no industry = no Jermany from where I sit.
From all the above, at least we are spared 100 pct press and tv ‘carpet bombing’ by global warming and green taxes brigades.
There is genuine hypocrisy – most MPs for example – and incidental hypocrisy such as found in the media, arising from living in an “endless present” to use Orwell’s phrase, a state encouraged by the smart phone generation’s attention span of a goldfish. Creating an ahistorical, endless present is why the left came for the school history syllabus first when capturing education.
Two Icelanders had suicidal thoughts and one had thoughts of self-harm, but none acted on these ‘thoughts’. What percentage of the Icelandic population have such thoughts anyway? With what frequency and intensity? Fleetingly or persistently? How many obese Icelanders have such thoughts from time to time just from being excessively fat? (Or just from being Icelanders). “Guff” is the right description and editors are indeed desperate these days, desperate to avoid reporting reality.
Nearly all medicine is about trade-offs. Aspirin relieves headaches but carries a risk of stomach bleed for some. A hip operation can relieve arthritic damage and restore mobility but carries a risk of complications as does anaesthesia. At a population level the benefits outweigh the usually small risks. Many long term drugs risk kidney or liver damage (statins, steroids, painkillers).
As to which of the nonces at the BBC is or is not behind the latest clickbait – well, don’t get me started
