Today is the day of the State Funeral for Queen Elizabeth II – a most solemn occasion for the Nation.
Today there won’t be the usual Daily Column. Too much has been written and said in the past ten days, so there’s no need to add yet another comment, yet another explanation of what it all means, yet another ‘outlook’ for what the future may hold.
Today is not the day on which to add more words to this huge pile of words already spoken and written. On this day it is bad form to mock even the mockers. That’s why I’ve refrained from writing my usual column. That’s why I am keeping the silence this solemn occasion requires.
However, all of you are invited to write your thoughts and comments in the usual place.
Well it`s late on gone 9pm and I`ve had a full day of it , mostly on GB TV, but I have chaneel hopped a few times to BBC and SKY, mainly because I could hear the bands better.
But overall I will hand the kudos to GB as I thought their quality stood shoulder to shoulder with their older rivals and in fact “came of age” It was particularly great to see Anne Diamond, Alistair Stewart and that historical genius David Starkie.and of course the ringmaster Nigel.
The general opinion appeared to be it had all gone off without a hitch, apart from a couple of service men fainting and a couple of unruly horses and the upshot was the `hope` that now the nation having seen such unity would ` come together` and appreciate properly the role of the `Monarchy in Parliament` and the loose constitution that had protected us from a tyrannical crown for centurys.and that we are oh! so proud of our helpful and wonderful services. (Didn`t hear the NHS mentioned once)
Oh! and there is to be a Christian revival………………….
The church services, unfortunately I`m not very churchy, but I did recognise a couple of hymns from my youth, although as an ex seaman, I would have been happier with “for those in peril on the sea” or my all time favourite cwm rhondda.
I was particularly grateful for the Arch Bishop of Canterbury giving a plug to Vera Lynn and I was quite touched by the symbolysm of the removal of the Sceptre, Orb and State Crown from atop the coffin at the commital in St George`s Chapel.
Yes it did come home to me that we had just said goodbye to a wonderful, dutiful and humble Queen who had actually cared for her people, the Commonwealth and many others around the world..
We had also witnessed a proper constitutional and symbolic `handover` to her son who swore to follow in his mother`s footsteps…………………….
Yes! there lies the rub……….it`s the gigantic elephant in the room ………

You also know about the cross chanel invasion.
You also know about Brexit which is incomplete (Northern Ireland protocol)
You also know about the dangerous position and strength of our armed services both as to equipment and man power.
You also know about the ECHR, our fishing rights gone, the European arrest warrant, the Yanks arrest arrangement.

Oh! and I will be intersted in which `aspects` of `faiths` he will defend and even which aspects he will `call out`
And a retired Major-General (whose name I can’t remember) complimented GB News’ coverage to Nigel Farage during his programme. The BBC probably thought they had it all sewn up, but now we have a choice.
I was having a quick look at the funeral. Let’s see: Joe Biden, Justin Trudeu, Tony Blair, Jacinda Ardern and there will be others; poor Queen, I don’t know about the Queen but I wouldn’t want that lot at my funeral.
A lot of the world’s problems could be solved at this very moment, if you’re thinking what I’m thinking.

Ayan Hirsi Ali praised the queue for lying in state as “National Identity in action”. Today’s funeral and the million or so expected to occupy central London continue that identity in action with a gathering of heads of state that few countries could replicate these days. Something to savour and remember.
