Is all of Downing Street – not “No 10” nor the PM – pulling the strings?
It’s time to ask again ‘who governs Britain?’ No, it’s not about Parliament and Constitutional Monarchy. It’s not even about the Mandarins of Whitehall – it’s worse. More on that below. Meanwhile, we need to go on a little diversion because there’s this Labour AMG where a certain Sir Keith Starmer will finally appear.
We’re told that he’ll declare later this morning in his AGM closing speech that ‘victory is more important than unity’. He’s also going to try to suppress ‘the left’ in his party and refuse to allow Corbyn back in. He told the BBC that it’s about:
“Winning. Winning a general election. I didn’t come into politics to vote over and over again in Parliament and lose and then tweet about it. I came into politics to go into government to change millions of lives for the better.” (paywalled link)
Aww bless! He’ll also promise to ‘build links with business’ and be ‘responsible with taxpayers’ money’ – shades of a certain T.B.? Far more important is that Sir K.S. actually said a few words about the current petrol crisis – not to his conference but to the BBC:
“The Government has reduced the country to chaos as we track from crisis to crisis. The Government is not gripping this,” […]”This problem was predictable and predicted and the Government has absolutely failed to plan.” (paywalled link)
It was this, we are given to understand, which was the ‘signal for Downing Street to act’. The Times has produced a detailed ‘and revealing analysis’. It’s this analysis, meant to underline and emphasise Sir K.S.’s accusation which made me believe that the constitutional powers – the PM, Parliament or even the mandarins – are not governing this country.
Well, we knew that these constitutional powers had abolished their duties when they handed over government to the unelected SAGEs last year. However, I was still too naive and assumed that, given all the ‘freedom days’, control had been taken back from SAGE.
Now I know better – and I have to thank The Times for enlightening me. At a first glance, their headline seems innocuous enough: “Downing Street feared an early intervention by PM would add fuel to the fire” (link, paywalled) – after all, it’s common usage to let ‘Downing Street’ stand for ‘the PM’.
However, it turns out that this is actually a convenient screen behind which all sorts of unelected people hide. A pity for the MSM that their favourite bugbear, Cummings, has gone. He can’t be blamed now. But shouldn’t we be told who all is this “Downing Street”, who is doing the actual governing, taking the decisions? Decisions were indeed taken, had to be taken after Sir K.S. had said something (my emphases):
“With only a few signs of panic buying abating and Labour beginning to make political capital out of the government’s discomfort, Downing Street decided that the prime minister’s silence on the issue was beginning to become a problem. Yet it was always a finely balanced decision. Until yesterday the calculation in No 10 had been that images of Johnson talking directly about petrol shortages could simply exacerbate the situation.” (link, paywalled)
Note well that “Downing Street” was worried about the effect of ‘an image’ of Johnson talking to us plebs – who, they assumed, were going to be scared stiff and panicking even more should the PM speak.
I have no idea what gave them that idea! Had they missed, had their precious polls and focus groups not told them that we’d become inured to the PM’s august presence, that we had stopped to give the proverbial when he spoke? Astoundingly, “Downing Street” thought that the PM calling for ‘calm’ might make matters worse! They thought it was better to alleviate “the problems rather than giving them greater prominence.” (link, paywalled). Really?
So why didn’t they? Why did it take so long for “Downing Street” to produce Johnson getting that proverbial grip? Why did ‘ministers’ only yesterday bring in the Army? Didn’t we learn yesterday that Government did have an emergency plan? Ah – ‘twas because it was all so very difficult! After all, “Downing Street” had to give priority to make the PM look good on telly, deciding that a ‘video clip’ would be better than a covid-like PR performance. And there was also ‘a dilemma’ which had:
“[…] bedevilled the government’s response from the outset. Ministers knew that once details of potential shortages at the pumps became public, the potential for fuel shortages to become a self-fulfilling prophecy was all too obvious. The just-in-time supply chain used to restock garages is based on predicted demand — and if that demand radically changes there is little that the system can do to cope.” (link, paywalled)
Clearly, “Downing Street” assumed this was a far too complicated concept to tell us thick peasants. However – they surely would have leaked this to the MSM! Which then begs the question: did the MSM decide not to inform us plebs in order to keep the petrol panic going? There’s more:
“Despite announcements about calling in the army to help with deliveries, ministers and officials always knew that this would make almost no difference to supplies.” (link, paywalled)
But weren’t we told by the Petrol ‘giants’ – those who leaked to the MSM that there was ‘a problem’ with deliveries because of a lack of HGV drivers – that there was enough fuel to go round? Why did “Downing Street” not recognise that this was the message the PM ought to have told the nation? Did “Downing Street” prefer not to interfere with the MSM fear campaign? Moreover, why did they not ‘go public’ when “it was quickly apparent that setting up a scheme to prioritise key workers would be impractical to implement.” (link, paywalled)?
Did “Downing Street” want to permit the usual suspects, e.g. the trade unions, to have their ‘wail in the sun’, as we saw yesterday? Today, some of them are doubling down, claiming that cancer patients will die if NHS staff isn’t given priority – even though a few paragraphs down we read that ‘only a few small appointments’ had to be missed in a London hospital and that there was ‘a problem’ with two consultants in Portsmouth (paywalled link)
I repeat my question: who governs this country? Is it faceless, nameless “Downing Street”, determining even what the PM can say and when? Is it the MSM which are driving government decisions because they run with leaks from their ‘highly placed’ anonymous government sources, creating the climate of fear and discord with which we’ve become so familiar now?
Worse – are we governed by those in “Downing Street” who aren’t simply concerned with the PM’s image, using spurious, questionable polls on which to decide, but are more interested in keeping their ‘connections’ to the MSM open, as escape hatch for future employment?
Are we therefore governed by MSM editors and publishers who are selecting the ‘sources’ which they quote with abandon, who are selecting the ‘leaks’ with which they sell their papers? I think the last sentence in The Times’ article gives the answer, even if somewhat veiled:
“Yet the crisis has proved something that Johnson is well aware of already from Covid — you may be prime minister but you’re not always in control of your own destiny.” (link, paywalled)
No, indeed not: the PM is ‘controlled’ by “Downing Street” – which is controlled by the MSM. This is how our country is being governed! If anyone has evidence to the contrary, namely that our elected PM and his elected cabinet are actually governing us – please give us chapter and verse in the comment section below!
KBO!
Downing Street = Munira Murza. She was with him when he was mayor and was appointed ‘Head of Policy’ at no 10 when he was elected PM. During all the shennanigans when Cummings was ousted and when others resigned there was one name that is still in post but never mentioned – Munira Murza.
This evening on GB News Nigel Farage interviewed one of his former Brexit Party MEP colleagues June Mummery who has a special interest in fishing and coastal communities and the detrimental effect that dopey Johnson’s worthless withdrawal treaty with the European Union has had upon them which have been effectively left in high water for years to come. Farage signed off by requesting that she continued to exert pressure on the government etc, and said that he would do whatever he could to help out. Well Nigel you’ve hit the nail on the head, there is one thing that you could do and that is to get yourself back into frontline politics and form another party to take on this useless Conservative government head on, and I don’t mean to get back into bed with Reform UK who are as bad as the rest of our political parties who do not work for the people of this country. Quite simply we need somebody of Farage’ calibre and personal charisma to do this, and under his inspired leadership of The Brexit Party he made an instant impact, something which I and many others believe could be done again. How about it………
But Colin, Farage was responsible for Johnson’s massive majority – he pulled out his candidates at the last minute and told his followers to vote Conservative. He’s never apologised for this, and I’m not sure I trust him any more.
This was clearly a ruse that was so transparent it was laughable as I often say here. It’s obvious and I’m amazed everyone fell for it.
Yes but it got far more of BREXIT than May’s W.A.
Can’t really blame N.F. for all the stupidity of the CONS since then.
Pauline, I entirely agree with you. What people like Jake Bennett and Xantilor don’t seem to understand assuming that they are not one of the same person, is that Nigel Farage pulled those 317 The Brexit Party candidates for one reason and one reason only, and that was to get Brexit done. Boris Johnson had said sufficient things before the 2019 general election to gain Farage’ confidence that he would stick to his word and pull this country out of the European Union on the 31st January 2020, and that is what eventually occurred Had the Brexit Party continued to fight every constituency in the 2019 general election and split the right of centre vote, it would have let Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party into power, and we would have still been talking about leaving the EU, or worse we would have faced a second referendum. As a Brexit Party constituency organiser I wasn’t entirely happy with that decision, but our local candidate and me accepted it for what it was. In any case had The Brexit Party continued to fight the 2019 general election whilst it may have been successful in splitting the traditional Conservative vote it would not have won any seats, that is guaranteed The sad fact of the matter was that The Brexit Party was thoroughly disorganised and wasn’t geared up to fight a local election let alone a general election. The party didn’t and still doesn’t exist outside of the party’s HQ office. We had no access to the other registered supporters details and addresses in our constituency so that we could contact them to ask if they could help out. So locally to where I live it was just me and the candidate, and although we delivered 10,000 leaflets between us it would not have been enough to secure the seat as we would not have had sufficient manpower to embark upon a canvassing campaign and man polling stations on election days etc etc. We have to satisfy ourselves that Johnson honoured his pledge to pull the country out of the EU, but Farage nor the rest of us knew that Johnson would renege on some of his promises and lumber us in the situation where we are right now.
Hey, I’m definitely not Jake. My opinions are my own. And I think we’d be in a better place now if the Conservatives had won a smaller majority, with the Brexit Party holding 30 – 50 seats. That massive majority Farage gifted Boris has enabled him to ride roughshod over the very voters who gave him power.
Can any newby HGV driver get on a tanker job ?
i dont think so . tanker jobs were the cream of artic jobs ; I know a lady who lives fine on a Shell drivers widows pension.
Were tanker jobs ever taken by Migrants ?
who let that happen ? And if they have all buggered off, bon debarras .
get rid of the managers who did it…
come on Comrade Keir , you know a firing squad is vital to an orderly society
Starmer “I didn’t come into politics to vote over and over again in Parliament and lose ” which is presumably why he voted with them on all the imporatent issues or urged then to go harder and faster on those that crippled the weakest.
who is controlling the MSM who are an absolute menace.
Remember – back in spring 2020? (And no doubt it worked so well that it was continued to cover many other things.)

Gates, Soras, Schwab, Bliar take your pick Mary.
The Government is the main advertiser in the MSM Mary. They have spent billions sinced the scamdemic started and it’s ongoing. The media won’t bite the hand that feeds them.
Fat FlipFlop Doris an educated idiot is a front for the ideologically committed internationalists who want to shift away from national sovereignty to global governance – One World Government, One World Dictatorship, through the United Nations. the Globalists govern Britain!
Ernie
Vivian Is one fantastic lady
She is and in my opinion it’s Davos man who governs from Soros to Gates the green lobby etc. They pull the strings and Johnson is a weak man in thrall of them and Carrie with an eye on future consultancy and dictatorships of course. Our current desperate situation has been building for years due to the advent of career politicians with no idea of how business works and who’s long term vision is restricted to the next Twitter feed.
Seconded!
Matt oop North makes a good point. Maybe neither Johnson or Downing Street is in charge. Nor the snivel serpents, the MSM or uncle Tom Cobley. Maybe those really in charge don’t even live in this country, after all for nearly fifty years we have had outsourced govt in Brussels. Maybe, even they are no longer in charge. They certainly don’t give any appearance of competence.
…..or, is the Fat Boy as some have observed, simply inept and disinterested that he has gladly abnegated his responsibilities to the mandarins and advisors and resort to pretending he is in charge.
Let us be under no illusion – the knives are being sharpened for him, but it won’t be the contenders for his job, it will be their mates who do the dirty deed.
I believe Jake Bennett that IS the way the CONservative party usually do it.
Yes Tony Woodcock. I tend to agree.
Mrs May’s surrender treaty was undoubtedly dictated from Brussels but since then control has moved to a global power base.
Who’s really running the country? It’s all explained in detail here https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1436736209519263744.html
These people however appear to be running scared and getting desperate. Showing their own extremely ugly brutal nature and sinking as low as going after our kids. Scared that the critical mass of people will wake up, grab their freedom back and stop collaborating, especially with the digital ID system aka vacpass.
We cannot be sure who runs the country (behind the throne, so to speak) but we can be sure who is responsible. Go to https://www.gov.uk/government/how-government-works#who-runs-government for the official version. It tells us the PM is responsible.
Responsibility runs backwards and downhill to implicate all those who voted on the basis of party when, in fact, they could truly vote only for a local candidate. The Party selects and approves the candidate, don’t forget. The public vote and approves the selection and the system.
We are ALL implicated. Just as important, if we continue to do as we’ve always done, its likely we shall get what we’ve always got.
Next question: Is that good enough?
Not me, vicar! I looked at the ballot paper and realised that, not only was there no-one worth voting for, there was no-one worth voting against. So I voted NO TO SUNNICA!!! in big black letters so that the candidates could read it easlily when thentellers held up the spoiled ballots.
West Suffolk since you ask. Have a look and see who you would have chosen.
JF
Good for you Julian.
I’ve just watched Starmers speech.. He’s going to fix everything, Despite leaving many hostages.. I think it likely he cannot meet a single promise. He is innocent.,but really not that bright. And he has actually copied some of UKIPs manifesto. Poor sod.
TG Spokes, sorry what has UKIP got to do with Starmer’s speech, and even if he did borrow some of UKIP’s manifesto, how would that make him a ‘poor sod’ The 2015 manifesto of policies was in fact a very good one, but I doubt whether you picked it it and read it.
We now learn that a public consultation over vaccine passports is imminent. So now that too much of ‘the science’ is unravelling and truths can no longer be suppressed, we move from ‘follow the science’ – which actually meant blindly doing as they are told by a small clique of ‘scientists’ and academics, all hugely compromised by conflicts of interest (financial) linked to Big Pharma and billionaire ‘philanthropists’ – to using ‘follow the polls’ – knowing that the brainwashed, fearful and timidly credulous public, who believe the BBC is trustworthy and politicians wouldn’t lie on such a grand scale, will, in their ignorance, back them. FThe integrity by-pass and unbounded cynicism is breathtaking.
What happened to leadership? Jennifer Arcuri, BJ’s mistress for four years, says he is unrecognisable from the man she knew. So from follow the compromised clique to follow the sheep in one simple step: bought, threatened, or simply a useful idiot who wants to be liked? You choose.

Here’s the link to the “Consultation”. What a joke. I posted it on another thread too.
The Fat Boy is in mess entirely of his own making. He does not command authority in any shape or form. No good blaming the wolves in the MSM, Whitehall or anyone else – they are a known, known, that is what they do.
Well I don’t know exactly who is running the country but: the people that knocked up Mrs May’s Surrender Treaty and cobbled together the Emergency Covid Legislation certainly do know who is running the country. They work for them.
Sorry .
