Many think that I’ve always been a bit of a nutter with my lifelong obsession with extreme activities. Among other things I am a very well qualified SCUBA diving instructor; not the pretty resort type of diving but something much more extreme.
We would train divers at an advanced level, sometimes in a freezing winter we’d take them to a nice bit of deep water, perhaps a lake or similar and give them a few drills. The conditions would be dark and hostile the silt would obscure what remained of the visibility and then we would get them to remove pieces of their kit.
One of the most unpleasant exercises was the removal of the mask and regulator, the warm air behind the mask was gone and the near freezing water would hit them like a bolt between the eyes. I’d always shine a light on their face and look at the eyes for that is where I could spot the first sign of panic.
Caught in the early stages of panic I can help the man or woman before things get out of control I can help him replace his mask or regulator. If the student goes into full on panic, I’ll move away from him and wait until he remembers his training and calms down before resuming the rescue.
If the student bolts for the surface from that depth, even if he remembers to expel the air from his lungs, he still risks bursting them or suffering massive embolisms. He may get to the surface and wave to the rescue boat but he may well be dead before the boat arrives.
If the student doesn’t regain his composure he will drown and I won’t resume the rescue attempt until he is subdued for one reason or another, if necessary I’ll allow him to drown and try and resuscitate him when I get him to the surface.
The first rule of rescue is: never try to help someone if they may be a danger to yourself, you’ll just end up with two casualties instead of one. A panicking diver if I allow him to get hold of me, very likely will kill me too.
Of course, it takes years of training and experience to deal with the types of stress that you may encounter with this type of diving, this is why we perform these drills to develop these skills. I know what real fear is like.
Once, with my buddy, we went to dive a monstrous shipwreck but the visibility was extremely limited, we followed the hull for a while thinking that if we remained outside we’d be safe. The hull was broken up however and folded over on itself, we entered the hull unknowingly and were separated. There I was lost inside a dark shipwreck, nearly fifty meters underwater and I could feel the panic rising inside me, that’s when the narcosis gets you; my air consumption went through the roof.
The training took over and I released a delayed surface marker buoy to help me find the hull above me as I couldn’t see a thing in the black abyss. The buoy stopped a few meters above me, I dragged it and shook it until it rose a bit further and followed it, repeating the process until I realised that I was in open water.
Happily, my buddy also made it to the surface and we sat in the sunshine on our boat and reflected on the situation we’d just been in. It was only the training that enabled me to control the panic, if I had done that I would have died. Survival though is a matter of choice, life or death is a decision that we make ourselves and we have no right to expect others to die trying to help us. Can you imagine though, perhaps I’d have to watch a close friend drown, that takes a lot of discipline and is against our human instincts. One bad decision though and I would never have seen that sunshine again although I have to say it was a bad decision not to have aborted the dive sooner.
These are lessons learned by every mountaineer, pilot and the military personnel that have ever fought in a war. Not everybody is capable of surviving, many divers and those listed above have died in such situations as will one day those Liberal / lefty idiots that have infiltrated our government and society.
Today we’re being expected to sacrifice our country, its resources and our way of life in a futile attempt to help those desperate to escape the Third World. These people turn up on our shores in increasing numbers each day and our government has given up all pretence of stopping them.
I’ve always been in favour of helping the Third World but not at the cost of our own survival. We are a small island, now horribly overcrowded, our resources stretched and still these immigrants turn up in the hundreds of thousands each year: it will end in disaster.
The world is not an ideal place to survive often it is necessary to make cold hard decisions to survive. There never was any requirement for us to sacrifice ourselves in a vain attempt to help others and this is a lesson that these bleeding heart Liberal / Lefties will learn soon enough; let’s just hope it isn’t too late.
As for me, when the time comes I will deal with it in the same cold and logical way that I have always done, I will do my best to survive and will put myself and my family first. Of course I’d like my countrymen to survive and so I hope that you will learn this lesson too and ignore the ignorant blatherings of the Liberal Left.
Very enjoyable Flyer. How true. How come the lefty twats always suffer from this pathological altruism -altruistic to outsiders of course never their own people. Part of the marxist brainwashing I suppose.
I really enjoyed this article Flyer and it brought back a lot of memories as I am a qualified diver too now retired of course. I also did my advanced training in a freezing deep quarry in the middle of winter (it was actually snowing). I remember having to take off kit and put it back on in the pitch black too. I like wrecks too but with so little bottom time at 40-50 meters I always carried a powerful torch and a handy computer on my wrist for decompression stops. Happy days, despite the subliminal message thank you.
Lisa. Did you by any chance meet Pam Sutherland on that scuba diving course? I remember her once describing exactly what you have talked about here. She was preparing to go on a trip to the Red Sea with the Vicar and his wife. So that might have put you off her/them!
I’ve very nearly fallen out with her over her support for the Church of England’s present support for ‘Save the whole World they are all our brothers’ type multi culturism.
What’s more she was or is a Europhile.
I thought this was a great and subtle article. It was a third through before I realised the message and how it can be applied to so many things.
Empathy and charity must be tempered by a good survival attitude and strategy, just as freedom is tempered by responsibility. “Love thyself” and all that.
If we are talking about immigration then I wonder why those ‘seekers of a better life’ do not try and make their home a better place to live.
A distinction has to be made between economic migrants and refugees. Those (spit the dog interlude) who decide to allow mass immigration should be mindful of their lack of authority and accountability to their employers.
Those who believe it is a virtuous necessity regardless of the ordinary rabble make a mockery of the meaning of racism. They should be mindful of the inability to impose virtue, if indeed that is what it is.
I feel now life is becoming a scramble, society has been undermined along with trust and respect obsessed with irrational belief and dogma.
I still care about my fellow humans but where will that stop for the sake of survival.
We are gathering to build a metaphoric stockade against the madness of the world.
Those outside still have a choice.
I think it was Churchill who once described appeasers as, “Those who feed a crocodile, hoping it will eat them last”. This is precisely what the ‘liberal left’ are doing, shamefully aided and abetted by our weak and virtue-signalling government, as we suffer the daily invasion by so many who wish us harm. Frighteningly, it clearly seems to be a race between the Muslims and the Chinese for world-dominance and under the current leadership of both the USA and the UK, neither country is likely to stand in the way. Prepare to defend your values, your way of life and your loved-ones as best you can on your own doorsteps folks, for conflict is inevitable. Be afraid – be VERY afraid.
Your last five words are the wrong ones, one must be calm and not afraid. Always make it as certain as possible that it is the agressor who dies as he hopefully is over confident and stopped thinking
To be afraid is to be prepared. That is something we are decidedly NOT, I’m sorry to say. “Si vis pacem, para bellum”!
It is overwhelmingly the Muslims that we are letting in. For no good reason at all. If only TPTB would put a stop to that there would be some chance they would fight it out between them elsewhere.
Encouraging Muslims to come has been government policy for far too long and has resulted in trashing of many of our former industrial towns as well as sex crimes against young girls. Surely the results have been apparent for years so we can only conclude that they are invited here as part of the ongoing oppression of native Brits.
Geoffrey Lazell. If I remember rightly, even Slartibartfast gave in and joined the Group Think!
flyer. Straight out, two people you should say that to:- Boris Johnson and the present Archbishop of Canterbury.
Really interesting and thought-provoking article, flyer.
