Be afraid – be very afraid – and pay up!

 

 

We’re Brits so let’s talk about the weather:  it’s all so very dreadful and we’re all gonna die. There’s a terrifying heatwave in Mediterranean countries where Brits are on holidays – will these holiday makers melt or will they be able to come back to our Isles? In other news there’ll be a new drug available on the NHS – from 2025 onwards: “Newspaper review: ‘Breakthrough Alzheimer’s drug’ and Greek wildfires” (link).

If you desire to be suitably scared, first thing in the morning, you might like to check out the article on the DM online site (link): it’s ‘climate fear porn’ at its finest. We know where those temperatures are being measured, so I’m approaching the editorial gasps with extreme caution. Of course, there are the ‘wildfires’, now even in Switzerland: the photos are all stunning and scary.

However, we never hear or read anything about the causes of those ‘wildfires’. Experience has shown that most of them are ‘anthropogenic’, i.e. accidentally or purposefully ‘caused’ by people. Still, what could be nicer than to read how hot it is elsewhere when we are shivering in our homes because temperatures are low. It’s been raining and the skies are overcast and have been for days: just one of those British summers …

This provides a nice background for a report on which government is basing their latest ‘adaptation programme’:

“Climate change poses a risk to national security, food supplies and critical infrastructure, according to a government report on how Britain will adapt to a rapidly warming world.” (link, paywalled)

Yes, well, ‘rewilding’ and “farms” for solar and wind have of course no influence at all on food security, neither has the increases in population anything to do with yon ‘risk to critical infrastructure’. Now see this:

“Disruption from climate change could also reduce the government’s revenue and increase its expenditure, a copy of the report — seen by The Times — shows.” (link, paywalled)

Well now – that is interesting indeed! Better create some more surcharges for us peasants: we can’t have our government go bankrupt because of ‘climate change’! Then there’s this:

“A University of Oxford study last week warned that the UK would see one of the world’s biggest relative increases in the need for cooling by air conditioning and other measures as climate change accelerates.” (link, paywalled)

Blimey! So “we” need air conditioning and whatever those ‘other measures’ are while Germany’s government is legislating for more and extra insulation and heat pumps for every house. Do we not have winters any longer but the Germans do? How intriguing! 

There’s also an intriguing paragraph about water and water companies because they’re ‘at particular risk from climate change’. More people needing more water isn’t mentioned, but there will be new ‘guidance’ and ‘regulations’:

“Water companies have so far failed to nudge customers to use less than the average 142 litres used per person each day, but the report talks of urging local authorities to ensure homes are built to standards that reduce consumption to 110 litres.” (link, paywalled)

Oh look: we’re going to be nudged again! Don’t ask why we need to be nudged but water companies aren’t told to sort out their leaking pipes! That would disturb the ‘narrative’ according to which everything is our own fault, forcing our poor government to take measures for which we pay.

And finally, if you needed one more reason to ask if Whitehall and the Westminster MSM editors have now utterly taken leave of their senses, there’s this:

“The report also promises to triple the UK’s funding for other countries to adapt to climate change, up from £500 million in 2019 to £1.5 billion in 2025, “to help reduce climate change impacts overseas that could affect the UK”.” (link, paywalled)

Can someone please explain how it is possible that government is anxious about losing revenue – that’s the money they take from our wallets, one way or another – because of climate change but has sufficient money to hand out up to £1.5bn to other countries? 

One last observation on this report on government ‘plans’ while ‘Europe’ burns: not once has the expression ‘Net Zero’ been used. I am puzzled by this omission. Is it because most of us have developed an allergy to hearing this noble goal mentioned?

I’ll finish with a look at the Alzheimer drug being hailed as the best thing since sliced bread. The report in the DT (paywalled link) voices concerns from specialists – not because of any side effects but because our NHS doesn’t have enough scanners to provide a diagnosis, nor do they yet have enough blood tests. Funnily enough the cost of this treatment isn’t mentioned at all. 

We can however deduce from the report in The Times (link, paywalled) that it won’t be as inexpensive as the statins the NHS nudgers want everybody to take. Patients need to visit a hospital every month, for an infusion of that drug. While the success of all that research and those trials cannot but be praised, I think we’ve all become a bit more cynical when reading about such wonder drugs from Big Pharma where neither costs and side effects aren’t mentioned nor the fact that this ain’t no cure but an ongoing treatment – the preferred business model of Big Pharma.
