Aww there’s cute, innit! Bless!

I can’t help but be astonished when I look at the latest reports from Kabul and on what our ‘leaders’ are doing. They’re unbearably cute in displaying ‘faith’ in those leaders. It’s their underlying belief that the Bidens and Johnsons of this world can actually achieve something, namely to get the Taliban to gracefully extend the deadline permitting them to fly out all and sundry. It’s touchingly cute.

It’s even more cute when one compares on the one hand the many reports about how Biden has lost the plot. Richard Littlejohn for example even called Mr Biden and his vice president ‘Lord and Lady Gaga of politics’ in his article in the DM (link). On the other hand, there’s the adorable faith displayed by BJ, telling the nation that, as leader of the G7, he will negotiate with the Taliban about extending that evacuation deadline.

Yesterday Biden talked to BJ in preparation for the ‘virtual G7 meeting today – sweet, innit, how slowly the clocks in the G7 leaders’ offices run! Today they’ll discuss the situation in Kabul – aww bless! They’ll talk about getting Biden to put pressure on the Taliban to extend that deadline (link).

Amazingly, our ‘war’ correspondents, writing from their secure armchairs and sofas in the UK, also seem to believe that, provided they can produce a multitude of headlines on how the Taliban isn’t the fluffy Mk II version they told us about two weeks ago, they can force the government to ‘do something’. Sweet, innit!

None of them seem to get it. On the one hand they report that the Taliban has warned the West that the 31st of August is a red line, that there ‘will be consequences’ should the Western Allies not have left their ‘occupation’ of Afghanistan (link). On the other hand we read that Biden actually ‘banned’ US troops from leaving Kabul Airport last week because he ‘feared a Black Hawk down’ incident. Now, at the last hour, he’s permitting them to go and rescue people amidst the huge chaos in Kabul, not least created by his order (link). How cute is that!

Rounding this up, there are the reports that ‘up North in Afghanistan’ there’s a sort-of resistance, led by the son of a former anti-Taliban and anti-Soviet warlord. The older ones amongst us remember that the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and that the US supported the newly forming resistance against the Soviets – a group calling themselves the Taliban. That Northern warlord was assassinated when the Taliban took over and drove out the Soviets in the 1990s. Now it’s the turn of his son who is, we’re told, ‘Sandhurst-educated’ (link). Aww, there’s adorable! And how do we know about all that, about the rumours that they’ll capitulate or won’t? Because they’re all on twitter – how cute!

You’ll have noticed that no mention is being made at all about our leaders talking to the two other big players – Russia and China. Perhaps they do so in deepest secrecy, but the Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace, is rightly more concerned with getting out as many as possible so won’t have much time. As for the Foreign Secretary, Mr Raab … well, we know what he’s doing, don’t we: fighting for survival in his job.

Meanwhile, there’s a former Tory Party leader, a certain William Hague, who must be secretly gloating that he had resigned from the Tory Party leadership just in time, before Blair got us into this mess. He now warns in an opinion piece in the Times of ‘danger’ – not coming from Afghanistan but from Africa (link, paywalled). That’s cute – but isn’t that also a bit racist?

And so to ‘Extinction Rebellion’, blocking everything in London. The police stood around for a bit before making arrests. I’m sure Londoners will be as delighted about this street theatre as the Mayor of London, as Carrie and as BJ.  It’s just what the nation needs to distract us from the Kabul mess. Surely Londoners will happily put up with more disruptions to their lives already severely disrupted by the lockdowns we remember so fondly. It’s all about ‘saving the planet’ – and it’s such good fun!

However – here’s a strange thing. There are lots of photos documenting what they were doing – see this report, for example. What struck me is that the whole lot of them is hideously white. Even those arrested by the Met police are exclusively white. Where are BLM protesters? Don’t they want to save the planet?  Surely the BAME people in our country are as concerned about the fate of our planet as these white, posh ‘rebels’. Surely these XRers can’t be deeply racist, can they?

It’s all so unbearably cute: the ‘XR’ street theatre with their oh-so-adorably funny actions producing delightful images; the darling faith of our MSM in the wisdom and power of our leaders who will surely be able to ‘save lives’; the endearing belief held by those leaders that the Taliban is actually misunderstood and will abandon their brutal ways, that they will give in to western demands for more time to ‘save lives’ … The cuteness of all that is truly endearing!

Those of us who don’t share the beliefs of the leaders and MSM writers know that reality will bite, as it always does. We’ll expect the MSM to turn on those leaders in which they’re putting their faith this morning, against all rational analysis. Don’t expect our darling MSM to ask how come that so many Brits were in Afghanistan in the first place. Don’t expect them to ask why we were and are paying for all this jazz.

Instead, repeat after me: the Taliban isn’t cuddly, putting giant pink tables in the middle of London isn’t ‘fun’. As usual we’ll pay for this, from cleaning up London streets to the green ‘measures’ coming our way to supporting all those now being flown out fo Kabul – known terrorists included.

It’s yet another instance of telling us plebs to shut up and pay later. Meanwhile, we surely must enjoy all those images – the sad and scary ones from Afghanistan and the ‘fun’ ones from London. After all – what’s not to like? Covid news have been relegated from the top of the front pages and there’s not been a squeak out of SAGE for days and days. Surely experiencing a bit of overwhelming cuteness instead is worth it!

KBO!
