Good news: Larry is fine!
Let’s start this morning with some really good news which I deem to be more important than the rest of the usual garbage: Larry the Cat, our Chief Mouser, is ‘feline purrfect’ and fit as a fiddle, having been seen by a vet (link). Phew. Keep going, Larry, 15 years is no age for a cat!
And now to the rest, beginning with the compilation of the front pages of the print media (link). I note that The Times is stepping out of line in regard to what the rest of the MSM deem ‘’important”: the economy (it’s going to get better – next year) and the scandalous profits made by Shell and BP.
However, all these issues are too brainy for us plebs and so we’re given a beautiful story about a Chinese ‘spy balloon’ currently drifting across the USA. You can read the whole thing in the DM which ain’t paywalled (link). At the time of writing there are three (!) articles on the frontpage of the online DT on this balloon. Of course, The Times also has a report, quoting a Pentagon spokesman, a Brigadier General even, who said that (this and following emphases are mine:
“The balloon is currently travelling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground. We are confident that this high-altitude surveillance balloon belongs to the [People’s Republic of China],” […] “Instances of this activity have been observed over the past several years, including prior to this administration.” (link, paywalled)
Firstly, I am appalled to see the latest ‘fashion’ of using ‘prior to’ instead of ‘before’ or ‘earlier’. This ‘usage’ is sadly becoming widespread over here as well. It doesn’t make users look clever or ‘modern’ – it’s just dumb.
Back to the balloon: why, if such ‘balloon incidents’ are apparently not unknown, has this become ‘a story’? Is it because some in the US government are trying to scupper the US Foreign Secretary’s planned visit to China and are trying to use the US MSM to achieve this, with the help of their MSM?
Closer to home we find that a certain paper is also trying to do ‘their bit’ to destroy a minister and perhaps even the top mandarin. It’s The Times’ , with their leading article, headlined “Dominic Raab: Simon Case ‘was told of bullying before Sunak brought minister back’” (link, paywalled). Taking a closer look there’s a strange omission:
“The cabinet secretary [Simon Case] was personally informed of a written complaint against Dominic Raab months before Rishi Sunak reappointed him as justice secretary, The Times has been told. […] An inquiry into Raab’s behaviour has been told that the deputy prime minister had to be spoken to about his behaviour towards officials last spring, when Boris Johnson was prime minister, and that Britain’s top civil servant was made aware.” (link, paywalled)
Interesting, isn’t it, that we aren’t told who ‘told’ The times. Usually, they hide such gossip behind the formula of ‘senior Whitehall’ or ‘Downing Street’ sources … There’s more:
“In addition, The Times understands that dozens of civil servants have submitted written statements in support of Raab’s accusers, saying that while they were not personally bullied they saw it happening to their colleagues. It will raise further questions about Sunak’s defence that he was not aware of any “formal complaint” against Raab when bringing him back into government, as well as whether and how Case raised the matter with the prime minister.’ (link, paywalled)
Note that Simon Case is mentioned repeatedly, note the expression of ‘being made aware’, stuck to both Case and Sunak. After writing that Raab denies these claims and that Sunak instituted an investigation now that he’s been ‘made aware’, there’s this:
“However, officials have told Adam Tolley, the KC leading an inquiry into Raab’s conduct, that they believe No 10 was aware of a written complaint last summer. A group of mid-ranking civil servants at the MoJ complained in March last year that Raab had created a “perverse culture of fear”, with officials visiting their GPs over stress.” (link, paywalled)
I note that we’re given a name, that of theKC ‘leading’ the inquiry. Then I note that it’s ‘mid-ranking’ civil serpents complaining: they are generally not in contact with their minister, it’s their superiors, the department’s mandarins who are. Why are those mandarins not in the firing line? Furthermore, how come these ‘mid-ranking’ civil serpents became so scared when presumably they, like most of Whitehall, were WFH? And never mind marvelling that they were actually able to ‘see their GPs … Finally see this:
“Sunak set up the inquiry when only two formal complaints had been submitted against Raab, one of them from his time at the Foreign Office, but the number has swollen, with Tolley thought to have interviewed about 40 officials, most of whom have made formal complaints. So many officials came forward in the MoJ that a “triage process” had to be set up to filter those who wanted personal help from those making formal complaints and those who wanted to act as witnesses.” (link, paywalled)
Crikey – what hell the DoJ must be! Or do we in fact see a concerted campaign, where we might assume that certain protagonists are telling The Times these ‘facts’ in a way that they can deny they’ve been doing so? I’m wondering about yon KC … and I wonder why a certain Mr Penman, the Civil service Trade Union boss, is also spilling the beans, especially when I saw this:
“Dave Penman, head of the FDA union, told Sky News: “I’ve spoken to people who are civil servants working and have worked for Dominic Raab, who have suffered mental health crises, have lost their careers essentially because they’ve had to move and change jobs.” (link, paywalled)
When will we read about other departments where mid-ranking civil serpents live in fear because of ‘Toree bosses’? I believe one can make a case that Whitehall is using The Times to run a campaign to get rid of Raab. Wasn’t The Times the main protagonist in the tarring and feathering of a certain Mr Cummings?
In the coming days and weeks I expect more stories about ‘Tory misdeeds’ coming out, in support of the demand for ‘regime change’, for a Labour government. There’s always the NHS and ‘Toree cuts’, to which the Armed Forces are now added, with a report in the DM that “we” only have ammunition for one day in case of a war against Russia – all because of ‘cuts’ (link). Since we’ve had a Tory government since 2010, these cuts are of course ‘Toree cuts’.
I wonder when we’ll hear the first grumbles about the ‘Toree policy’ of supporting the Ukraine, leading to empty ammunition depots. It would be a larf if Labour were to stop such support, thereby clearly showing their true colours as ‘Putin lovers’ … Stranger things have happened.
That’s all I have for today. The Six Nations kick off tomorrow so we’ll soon know if wokeism will affect the singing of Welsh fans. I wonder if the singing of ‘Bread of Heaven’ will be banned next “because: religion!”. Also, isn’t ‘Men of Harlech’, ahem, somewhat racist? And what about ‘Swing low sweet chariot’? Slavery, innit, and ‘cultural appropriation’! Best stop singing altogether, everywhere. Have a good day.
I do not know why but today’s Daily Sceptic has raised the subject of the W.H.O. seeking global control, over all nations, when it next decides to announce a world wide health Pandemic. Worth reading and saving.
In the news today:
https://www.gbnews.uk/politics/john-bercow-explodes-at-nigel-farage-in-furious-attack-on-brexit-britain-it-has-been-a-terrible-failure/435864
With people like Bercow around who needs enemies? I guess he is typical of many remoaners trying to trash our country. They should relocate to an EU member country if they don’t like it here.
I looked at this video on the GB News website and to be honest Bercow was treating the whole subject as a joke. Whilst Farage was answering the question put to him by Esther McVey and her male colleague, Bercow was laughing his socks off because quite rightly Farage was blaming the Conservative Party for the way in which Brexit was implemented. Bercow can laugh as much as he likes, but there is one unescapable fact that he cannot refute in that the party which pulled this country out of the European Union is the the Conservative Party and it is the Conservative Party who negotiated the rotten trade deal with the European Commission where Northern Ireland was treated differently from the rest of the country insofar as single market and customs union rules is concerned, and where we are left in the situation where we haven’t got 100% control of our Fishing and Territorial Waters, and it is the Conservative Party who has failed to deliver all the potential advantages of Brexit by cutting red tape and trashing of all European Union laws. There is no other party to blame for this mess other than the Conservative Party because they are the party of government, or at least that’s what they think they are. And it is this unholy mess and well as all the other unholy messes they have presided over during the past three years which suggests that they should never ever be trusted again with the keys to Number 10 Downing Street or to rule over us as a government. This party’s credibility and those who serve in its government has literally been shot to pieces, and I’m looking forward to the day when they are voted out of office on a permanently basis where those ministers who are ultimately responsible for this gross incompetence lose their seats in the House of Commons and have to go out and get a real job. My guess on the strength of what they have done over the past 12 years is that some of them will be unemployed for a very long time. I for one will have no sympathies whatsoever. Politically, the Conservative Party are the scum of the earth. Anyway, rant over……..
There is a huge difference between bullying and being told to do your job, we should be told. I don’t believe a word of it. Sack them all, nobody would notice.
PoS- In summary – work ethic is no more. Scientific fact is no more. Britain is . . .
Kier the Kneeler has a lean and hungry look.
Off topic. Have you noticed that the Ukrainium has gone quiet in the msm. Apart from the party political broadcasts of the bearded and verically challenged tramp now and again, there’s nothing. Ukrainiums camped outside the Gates of Moscow, Putin has cancer (five times last year), the third World Ruskies running out of missiles, fifteen tanks when repaired, will win the skirmish – is but a memory.
Viv, do you mean fashionable such as:-
The Ohbarmessiah often uses the word oftentimes. That probably makes him feel intelligent, even though he is not.
Gotten and getten are entering the fray.
Eye glasses, in order to distinguish them from knee glasses. The authority on Style – Strunk and White, scorns this distinction saying – spectacles.
But S&W don’t know nuffin(!).
For the past several years? It’s a bit like a double negative but instead a double past tense.
Regarding double speak, as Eric said:-
If you cannot write well, you cannot think well.
And if you cannot think well, others will do it for you.
And Viv, why all the pix deese days is of vermin, innit?
Well spotted! As for all pix deese days is of vermin: huh, that’s only taken from real life.
However! Larry ain’t vermin! He’s the only non-vermin in yon building.
Bravo! Encore Ma Brave!!
No idea whether there is any substance in the allegations against Raab – probably not, but it is difficult to raise much sympathy for Raab. He is a career politician of a party that is rotten from top to bottom (as are all establishment parties) and to date, I am not aware he has raised this issue thus, as far as I am concerned I care little for his fate.
It’s not about raising sympathy for Raab, it’s about this campaign to get rid of him. I wouldn’t mention this had the reason for ditching him be his behaviour during that catastrophic ‘retreat’ from Afghanistan where his bailiwick, the FO, was empty, he himself coming back a day later because he was on holidays. It’s the concerted: ‘he’s a bully – he made people sick – everybody says so’ campaign which is so detestable. And yes, I do detect the fine hand of Remain/Rejoin behind this because he’s supposed to work on getting us out of the clutches of the ECHR …
Yes Viv, I agree. Getting us out of the ECHR is very important indeed. Remain/Rejoin are almost certainly behind this. Apart from which, personally I just do not believe all that rubbish about his bullying and it making those fragile people unwell.
Yes, I accept your point Viv. But surely if we know how the blob operate the Tories know this too and shouldn’t they be fighting them on the front foot rather than the back foot? The only man who would have taken on the blob has been sacked by Doris. With the huge majority that the Tories enjoy they could have had us out of the ECHR 2 years ago if they had wanted to do so. IMHO they will play the leaving the ECHR card for all it is worth over the next eighteen months in the run up to the GE. Nothing they say will convince me they have any intention of leaving the ECHR. Promises from the Tories are worthless.
Angela Rayner had to apologise for calling the Tories (MPs?) scum which was very crude language that shouldn’t be used in the House but she did have a point.
Know what you are doing and where you want an organisation to go these days and you are’ arrogant’, tell or instruct somebody to do something instead of asking’ would you like to’ and you are a bully. But then with productivity and competenece hitting all time highs in the U.K why would any manager have to bother with actually getting a workforce to ‘do’ what they are actually paid and there for.
Quite NORMAN. Especially the tongue in cheek bit about productivity and competence being high.
I feel sure at some time in my working life, when asked ‘would you like to do so and so’, I have replied ‘no but if you tell me to I shall have to do it won’t I’!
Re “bullying”.
We do seem to have some snowflakes in the civil service.
If they re’ going to work to their own agenda, and not the governments, they can expect be “bullied”
Bullying was normal when I was at work. Nobody cared.
It is a rare day indeed when I have to agree with Harry, but he has it in a nutshell. And these snowflakes, these Violet Elizabeth Botts stamping their feet at being asked to do something conservative (small c, never mind large C) is only the half of it. What about the industrial scale hypocrisy? These same folk and their soulmates have no hesitation genuinely bullying people who know that there are only two sexes, for example, and a whole raft of other deliberately divisive nonsense.
HO! A “william” fan/Richmal Crompton!
Don’t bully them, nudge them. Say, if you don’t want to do what I ask, you’re fired!
