The current PM: not working but leaving a pile of his mess for others to clear up
I’m ever so grateful to the people who compile the morning’s front pages of the dead tree press (link). Otherwise I’d never get to see what The Star produces. They are pretty creative when it comes to headlines and their picture editors are also quite good. This morning we get ‘Zombies at No 10 – Night of the living dread’. That hits the proverbial right on the head.
It is quite astonishing that the ‘quality press’ hasn’t touched the scandal of this absent government. Why is it that the whole cabinet is apparently incapable of doing anything at all in regard to inflation and the rampaging energy bills? The broadsheets are silent.
Johnson, still PM, is doing what he does best: nothing at all. The current Chancellor of the Exchequer, a certain Mr Zahawi, is silent. The current minister at Defra, a certain Mr Eustice, is silent. The current Home Secretary, a certain Ms Patel, is silent. Are they all on holidays? Is there nobody who is willing to recall the HoC? Are they all so fixated on that ‘race’ between Truss and Sunak that everything else is simply left to fester? Are their handlers, the Whitehall mandarins, also on holidays? The dearth of ‘sources’ leaking to their friends in the Westminster press would seem to indicate this.
Can we say that we have no government at present? I believe we can. I believe that the current situation, where Tory ‘Big Beasts’ are populating the broadsheets with their declarations of support for Truss, shows nicely the contempt in which they hold us, the electorate. Let the people, especially the poor and vulnerable, worry about how to pay the coming bills! Let the MSM produce ‘experts’ whose advice nobody in government needs to follow! Let MSM ‘experts’ scrutinise any ‘U-Turn’ by La Truss: that’s entertainment because we all know that she can’t do anything.
As for Sunak – well, he’s now apparently found some principle on which to stand. A pity this ‘principle’ only came out as another swipe at Miz Liz:
“Rishi Sunak on Wednesday night declared he would rather lose the Tory leadership contest than promise “false things” in a swipe at his rival Liz Truss’s economic policy. […] Mr Sunak said: “I haven’t been saying the easy things, and actually I’m prepared to lose this contest if it means that I’ve been true to my values. I’m fighting for the things that I think are right for this country. I’d rather lose on those terms, than win by promising false things that I can’t deliver.” (paywalled link)
Blimey. Well, Rishi, to this here cynical old cow you sound as if you’re already preparing your excuses for your defeat. I’m sure your ‘strategy analysts’ have already calculated that you’ll lose. So why not throw in the towel? Why not talk to the Tory Grandees about conceding now and letting Truss take over, now? After all, these Big Beasts know full well that another four weeks of internecine strife will damage even further any prospects of the Party surviving the next GE.
Do the Tory Party ‘leaders’ really think that a repeat of the ‘coronation of Mrs M,’ who was left the lone survivor after all others had withdrawn, would be more damaging than the current state of affairs? How contemptuous of the plight of their constituents is that – and how shortsighted!
They’re leaving an open goal for Labour – and lo and behold, suddenly a former PM is speaking out. For years we’ve not heard anything from Mr Gordon Brown. Now, writing for the Grauniad, he calls for a ‘temporary re-nationalisation’ of energy firms (link). No, I also dunno likewise either how this can be achieved. All I know is that something which is ‘temporary’ will often outlast that which is permanent.
Of course, given that his predecessor, Mr T.B., had scrapped Labour’s ‘programme pillar’ of nationalisation, this means that we can expect a similar bloodbath inside Labour as the current one in the Tory Party. Brown is however correct with this observation:
“He warned the time for action was slipping away and major decisions had to be made within days. “Time and tide wait for no one. Neither do crises. They don’t take holidays, and don’t politely hang fire – certainly not to suit the convenience of a departing PM and the whims of two potential successors.” (link)
Just so. Furthermore, this ‘re-nationalisation’ plan will fall on fertile grounds with the electorate. Allister Heath in the DT has written a scathing analysis under the headlines:
“The horrifying truth behind the coming collapse of basketcase Britain – The political climate is veering hard-Left, thanks to 20 years of short-termism, cowardice and state failure” (paywalled link)
This essay is worthy of receiving our ‘From behind the Paywall’ treatment, coming out later today, even though he sadly finishes declaring his support for Miz Liz, couched in flowery language.
Our esteemed MSM meanwhile are indulging in ‘moar fear porn’ rather than asking relevant questions. The DT moans about possible wildfires sweeping across England because of the heat wave, garnished with a proper scare graph (paywalled link). The Times has a go at the Police failing in their duty (link, paywalled).
They also have a piece on avian flu decimating seabirds nesting around the East Coast (link, paywalled). I mention this because the report is garnished with photos of people on a seashore picking up dead birds, all wearing hazmat suits. Since the bird flu doesn’t affect humans, I ask myself if this is how the millions of unused hazmat suits, stockpiled ‘because: covid’, are being recycled and used up because we have them. If you like sob stories with your coffee, then there’s always the DM where you can find a slew of them – scroll down here for ‘there’s no water’ wails.
Why is it that all those fabulous Westminster ‘editors’ and ‘political correspondents’ are clearly unwilling to ask who is actually running the ‘ship of state’ right now? Why is it that nobody in the Westminster MSM is asking where the deputy PM is (still Mr Raab)? Why is it that nobody in that swamp is raising a voice about the whereabouts of the current PM?
Are ‘heatwave’, “WFH” and ‘summer holidays’ the excuse for ‘nobody at home’, nothing to be done, let the plebs swelter and stew and worry? Remember last year’s complaint by a young civil servant in the FO who was left alone to deal with the Afghan evacuation? It seems we’ve got the same situation now, only now it’s all of us who are suffering.
Meanwhile, Johnson is protected by the MSM. It doesn’t matter to the swamp dwellers that BJ, like a brat, shows that he couldn’t care less what mess he’s leaving behind. Why should he do some work and leave some semblance of order for his successor? There are no photo ops in that …
He gave us ‘L’etat ç’est moi’, now he gives us ‘après moi le déluge’. Nothing could show better the utter contempt in which he holds all of us.
Government have plenty of time and energy for this, but never for anything useful:
This is copypasted from a Big Brother Watch email I had today:
“South Wales Police will deploy Orwellian live facial recognition in Cardiff city centre on Queen Street this Saturday (13/08/22) from 11am.
Today marks two years since the Court of Appeal ruled that South Wales Police breached privacy rights and broke equalities law with their use of live facial recognition, after Liberty and Ed Bridges brought forward a successful legal challenge.
However, this judgment hasn’t stopped the force from deploying this dangerous technology. They’ve simply tweaked their policies and carried on.
In fact, South Wales Police are ramping up their facial recognition capacity.
The force is also using retrospective facial recognition and a facial recognition mobile app, bringing this Orwellian technology into the palms of their hands.
They are even hiring a spin doctor to promote it.
Instead of spending taxpayers’ money trying to cover up the bad press facial recognition has received, South Wales Police should SCRAP this wasteful and intrusive surveillance.
Are you in Cardiff on Saturday to observe this deployment?
Please take photos & let us know what’s going on.

The quick, instant method to stop Inflation is to cut TAXES OF ANY NAME< INCLUDING GREEN TAXES.
The Civil Service can NEVER ALLOW TAX CUTS
I should have said TAXES OF ANY NAME ON FUEL OR ENERGY.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Boris joined Truss against the civil service. Wonderful opportunities for our country could be possible. The apalling grip the services world view has on our country desperately needs air and freeing.
Instant comment:-
We don’t want more investment in GREEN energy – renewables.
We want and need, investment in energy from fossil fuels and nuclear!
Let the Tory infighting play out to the end. At least two reasons.
1) We are probably better without any government for a while.
2) For heavens sake don’t let the winner call a snap election, like May did.
I don’t know about wildfires and avian flu coming with the easterly wind.
I’m surprised it isn’t yet bringing THE RUSSIANS !!!
PB- funny you should say that . . . I received a letter from the electoral registration officer today, to check if the details chez-nous were correct.
So did I.
Why do government departments still use brown envelopes? Don’t they know that seeing them in the mail a recipient can be frightened to death nowadays?
I disagree. We could replace them all and have an abundance of renewable and undamaging energy with a sensible policy to research and develop geothermal energy.
Two example pilot plants in the UK — United Downs, Cornwall and the Southampton District project — point the way. Strangely, these project have found it very difficult to get funding and have had almost zero publicity and government attention. I wonder why? Could it be that vested interests never wanted these possibilities to be investigated and researched?
A spokeswoman for United Downs said recently that for a relatively modest investment, I suspect she meant modest when compared to the money going into wind, solar and nuclear, the country could obtain 18 times our national need for domestic energy within a few years.
No George it doesn’t work.
A friend of mine lives in a building where it was installed and promptly broke down and no one knew how to repair it.
It brings different new problems as well. Like due to the deep drilling that they did large rats were able to invade the inner courtyard so residents cats and dogs were banished from there so the rats could be poisoned.
I think the spokeswoman from United Downs has charmed you with her Sales Talk.
George- for those who are unfamiliar with the technique you speak of in its crudest form is along these lines:-
– Identify a hot formation underground.
– Drill two wells xxx calculated ft apart in that formation.
– Next is to pump fluid, most likely ‘planet destroying’ fresh water, and ‘earthquake’ wells remember (Ha!), down the first well.
– Wait for a calculated time for heat transfer from the hot formation to the fluid – spell time.
– Slowly open the other well and theory says the pressurised’ pumped up formation will discharge into the second well.
– Hot water energy comes to surface (in theory).
This has been tried in the past at Camborne, with cooperation from Camborne School Of Mines. This has been perused over the last 40 to 50 YEARS that I know of, without positive result. Things may have changed recently, so I am happy to receive SPE positive supporting papers.
Problems have been – pump fluid down say a million or so gallons; spell for a couple of days; open up the second well and next to nothing comes up – fluid all disappeared into formation.
Just like the great saviour that is *European* shale gas, this similarly is not a likely winner without a lot more thought / technology. I have seen shale gas well tests in Europe where a domestic gas meter has been employed to get a flow rate (yes!). Again SPE papers gratefully received.
I have an airplane that can sniff out oil two miles underground. Want to buy into it? It’ll only cost 200 million – look it up.
Don’t put faith in false Gods.
The spokeswoman probably has better looking legs than me, but I’m not a salesman.
Now about that sniffer plane, SNEAP think it is a good idea . . .
Given Johnson’s early ambition to be King quotes from Louis XIV and XV are apposite with Carrie playing the part of Madame Pompadour (to whom Louis XV made his famous remark). They also summarise the Johnson era exactly. He began as Louis XIV and finished as Louis XV.
Truss or Sunak may not admit it, but the country’s problems are so great that it may take decades to solve. Meanwhile, whoever becomes PM will end up King Cnut (as Canute came to be known).
I went to a talk by Anthony Seldon on British Prime Ministers (of the last two centuries). His theme by the end was that anyone who wanted to be PM was almost certainly mad. He meant it.
Stout. I believe Boris’s ambition was to be King of The World, not just of this country.
Compare the present government impotence and paralysis to the zeal with which they pursued the Covid and Ukraine comedies or rather the Great Reset. . They’ve plenty of energy when it comes to harassing and tormenting us.
Ugggh. I’m beyond disgust.
Re birds: bring on a bit of avian flu round my way!!!!!! We’re plagued with grey pigeons: the males aggressively pursuing the females, chasing them up garden paths, attacking mid air, mating dances with hopping and tails up, , a constant rather cocky mating call 24/7. (Daa de de Daa Daa, Daa Daa) !
If I’m ever short of food they’ll be the first !!!!!!!
‘Nowt wrong with pigeons mary. It’s the crows and magpies I can’t stand!
mary- for a decent feed you need at least four. Only meat worth going for is breast and under wing muscle.
(Dont knock it till you have tried it)
err, four pigeons
I don’t think anybody is suffering. We are all the result of our own uselessness. Myself included. We are ignorant, stupid and idle and deserve our masters.. Get a grip.
Let’s see what Colin has to say about that.
TG Spokes…..you are beginning to sound like a certain chap called Arry saying people are stupid, ignorant and idle, however to a degree you are right that the electorate of this country are the architects of their own downfall by voting for the same shower of shyte every general election or local election, and taken in by their false promises. Politicians do what they do best and that is not adhering to their party manifesto promises. Certainly here in the UK, our national politicians do not act in the best interests of the citizens of this country and are always worried what our supposed ‘friends and partners’ might think if they actually based their policies on what is right for Britain, but not necessarily right for our continental neighbours. However, as individuals we have no control over what occurs beyond the threshold of our doorstep, and that is why we need local and national governments to take those decisions. Johnson has to be the laziest and most incompetent person ever to set foot into Downing Street and seems to just go through the motions of being a prime minister without doing terribly much. Yes, he got us out of the European Union, his one and only achievement, but since then he has been a walking disaster zone. And whilst a leadership election is ensuing he is still the prime minister of this country, but refuses to act apart from waffling on behind a podium how the next prime minister will do something about the cost of living. Big bloody deal. Whoever is responsible for paying this twerp his salary which in his is far too much, should pull the plug on it. In any other job he would have failed his probationary period and been shown the door. An utter waste of space who wont be missed.
I agree with almost everything you say, Colin. The one thing I disagree with is * …. he got us out of the European Union, his one and only achievement, …. “. He didn’t even do that. He got us stitched up with a deal that still ties us into the EU and is restricting and damaging to the UK.
He has done nothing about the unlimited legal immigration and all the illegal immigration, nothing about energy and nothing for our fishing industry. So, an unmitigated disaster in every regard.
George………..yes I missed that bit out by mistake. He got us out of the EU on an ill thought out half baked deal which was hardly oven ready as he put, and just settled for anything rather than going down the WTO route, but he was and is weak as ditchwater. He should never ever agreed to Northern Ireland being effectively annexed from the rest of the country, and has made a pigs ear of our Fisheries and Territorial Waters where French fishermen and the like are permitted to fish up to 6 miles from our shores, thereby shafting our own fishermen. And as for securing our borders, well that is a bloody joke and is making us a laughing stock throughout the world. What should have happened once the Conservative leadership contest was announced is that Johnson should have been forced to step down immediately and replaced with Dominic Raab who is the Deputy Prime Minister. What earthly point is there of appointing a Dep. Prime Minister and paying that person to carry out the role, if they are permitted to do it. Johnson loves the kudos of being prime minister but it is totally unsuitable for the role because he is not prepared to carry what is expected of him. Come the next general election, the Conservatives will be severely punished for this error of judgement. However this situation is an error of judgement too far in my opinion.
If any of that crowd had worked for a living, they would have read the company ‘delegation of authority’ manual.
And followed it to ensure ‘business as usual’.
Morning Biscotte. I’ve just had a dip into the Manuel mentioned.. I think it is OK. Ridiculously nit picking but not actually harmful ,except anything like this becomes a bible for bureaucracy and wasting time. Encapsulated, I found clear and SIMPLE Authorey carries Responsibility and Vice versa They can never be seperated.
This can be polished and cleaned by reading the Authoritative and humorous books by the somewhat more related industrual life of the 50’s abnd 60’s pre-computer reality to which we will need to return. With The Peter Principle, Northcote-Parkinson..
It is my belief that we will be forced by the dead hand of economics and reality instead of wishes. and be forced into a ever greater power of people and their reward. Realisation of this would put us where we belong The Unions may be of help, they may not..
It is true that the way, how who, we pay, is ludicrous and in the hands of mainly wrong people.
I spent many years looking into the work/reward anomalies. From the view of the top. And how and why and what is needed to grow into a economis power without the supremacy of money and birth etc.
Just saying, Sorry Biscotte.
TG- nothing to be sorry about!
Manual we used for a long time was nearly a whole page.
Summary at rhe top – if you are going to be off for any reason, delegate to someone to take your place and they will be assumed to have all authorities / responsibilities you have. Let all those who need to know, know by email or phone.
Job done.
Its when the lawyers get hold of it and the party of the first party is xxx, and the party of the second party herein after . . . .
Or the consultants are brouught in to write it, paid by the pound weight.
Reviewing one, I suggested we go down to see the fork lift truck driver to confirm understanding of his written responsibilities. Read this and tell us what you think Alfie.
The party of the first party also known as the forklift truck driver shall, but not be limited to . . . to eu regulation eu/af/97/xyzandbar of 2010 amended in 2016 to . . . .
Again – one page.
When I left the coy someone got (a backhander??) to rewite it all to meaningless gibberish.
