Fear is the key
‘News’ and ‘politics’ are now only made, only take place on social media, preferably on twitter or the competing ‘telegram’. It seems that there are no journalists left working who’re worthy of this label, i.e. those who were taught to check and re-check what they are reporting about and moreover to separate their opinion from the factual report.
In the olden days anything which could not be verified independently was simply not reported as ‘news item’. Gossip from ‘sources’ found their way into opinion pieces but were not news. For some years we’ve observed the slow deterioration of proper reporting, of using tweets as ‘material’ for reports. We’ve noticed that more and more often the personal opinion of a writer was mixed into their factual reporting. Certainly writers and journalists have their own political worldview, their opinions, and thus are incapable of writing without bias. But at least in the olden days ordinary readers were able to select between publications which mirrored their own political stances. Not for nothing was the DT known as ‘Torygraph’.
Now the MSM don’t even pretend to be ‘unbiased’, they don’t even pretend to check out the veracity of ‘a story’. During the covid years we’ve become aware that our MSM, across the board, became the propaganda outlets for the government’s, that is SAGE’s, policies. Looking back, this now appears to have been a preliminary exercise which has taught editors and writers to abandon even the pretence of neutrality.
The latest trick, all the way down from ‘news agencies’ to the newsrooms in our MSM, is to publish any tweet and ensuing accusation with the rider ‘we couldn’t verify this independently’. In a court of law this would be inadmissible as ‘hearsay’. In today’s MSM it’s splashed across the front pages anyway, aimed to create ‘a mood’, to stir up emotions. The emotions being stirred this morning are ‘Putin is a barbarian – he uses poison gas’ and thus “we” must do something about this.
I’ve done some detective ‘work’ in order to document how this latest ‘outrage’ has been manufactured. First, see the original tweet, posted yesterday evening, which kicked this off:
“The Azov Regiment reports that about an hour ago #Russian troops used a toxic substance of unknown origin against Ukrainian military and civilians in the city of #Mariupol. The victims suffered from respiratory failure and vestibulo-attack syndrome.” (link)
Later yesterday evening Reuters came with the inevitable utterance from Mr ‘e, calling for ‘moar sanctions’. The title of Reuters’ report is indicative: “Ukraine’s Zelenskiy warns Russia could use chemical weapons, calls for more sanctions” (link). That whole concoction is heaving with quotes from ‘experts’ such as the mayor of Mariupol and the Pentagon press secretary, all carefully saying that they don’t know ‘for sure; that this report is not ‘verified’. I’ll just quote the latter:
“Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said the United States was aware of the reports. “We cannot confirm at this time and will continue to monitor the situation closely,” Kirby said. “These reports, if true, are deeply concerning and reflective of concerns that we have had about Russia’s potential to use a variety of riot control agents, including tear gas mixed with chemical agents, in Ukraine.” (link)
The tenor of these utterances is ‘we might not know if this has taken place, but “Russia = bad”, therefore they could have done it’. In essence, Reuters, by reporting what these personages said, prepares the hymn sheet for the MSM across the west, for this morning’s ‘outrage’.
Next, there’s a report of a tweet by an ‘Ukrainian Lawmaker’ (WTF is a ‘lawmaker’? Why not use ‘MP’ or ‘representative’?) which was picked up by news agencies and then repeated by the MSM, here by DT:
“Ukrainian lawmaker Ivanna Klympush said Russia had used an “unknown substance” in Mariupol and that people were suffering from respiratory failure. “Most likely chem.weapons!” she tweeted.” (paywalled link)
The German paper ‘Die Welt’ has apparently found another tweet, reporting this morning (my emphasis):
”the Azov regiment, which is also fighting in Mariupol, announced on Monday evening that Russian forces had dropped an unknown chemical substance over the city by means of a drone. Initially, there was no confirmation of this from other Ukrainian military sources. Former Azov commander Andryi Bilezkyi reported on Telegram about three people with signs of poisoning.” (paywalled link in German, machine-translated)
Three people with ‘symptoms’? Omigawd, that’s terrible, innit! And finally, here is Miz Truss, dutifully reported in the DT:
“The Foreign Office is trying to verify reports that Russia has used chemical weapons in an attack on the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol, Liz Truss has said. “[…] We are working urgently with partners to verify details,” the Foreign Secretary wrote on Twitter. “Any use of such weapons would be a callous escalation in this conflict and we will hold Putin and his regime to account.” (paywalled link)
I leave it to your imagination how Miz Truss and her civil serpents, how western media will be able to ‘verify’ this claim. After all, Mariupol is occupied by Russian troops, with the exception of the Azovstal factory area where the last Aziv fighters are bunkered up.
I shall refrain from asking why the Russian military would use ‘a chemical substance’ over an area which they occupy and where their troops are fighting. One could of course let one’s imagination free rein and claim these troops must have been given an antidote. Also, this ‘news’ is nicely indicative of the ‘inept Russian military’: their ‘chemical attack’ only affected three people.
All this outpour of outrage, this manufacture of yet another narrative of ‘we must fight against the barbarian Putin’ might perhaps only be about filling spaces in the tedious news reports about ‘brave Ukraine’. It might on the other hand be used to prepare ‘public opinion’ to defend any subsequent chemical attacks by those ‘Ukrainian heroes’ on the civilian population. There were numerous reports from the Russian Ministry of defence on how Ukrainian military have mined chemical industrial complexes in order to release noxious substances affecting the towns and villages from which the retreat.
Of course, not only do “we” not believe a word any Russian says, “we” don’t even look at their sites or twitter accounts, or rather: we’re prevented from doing so thanks to our benevolent government which wants to save us from noxious propaganda. Certainly Miz Truss won’t contact Mr Lavrov to as for clarification.
Meanwhile, nothing else has happened in the world worthy of reports and articles in our MSM. There’s another case of blatant robbery of Russian property in Poland (link), regardless of consequences (link). There’s Pakistan where Imram Khan has been deposed thanks, allegedly, to US meddling (link). For an overview of more US political meddling, there’s this article In Indian Punchline under the title “Asian fault lines of Biden’s war on Russia” (link). All that is of no interest to our MSM who are addicted to a daily dose of ‘Mr ‘e sez …’
Forgive me for going on at length about this profound journalistic failure. It’s no longer another reason for why we don’t believe a word the MSM and by extension the government are saying. These ‘news’ might be the precursor to prepare us for our military engagement in the Ukraine: ‘boots on the ground’.
Not even during the first covid lockdown have I felt so helpless in the face of blatant government manipulation.
I suspect that what could be the most imporant developement of life in Britain, is taking placeon the telly right now, with the police fines . On the other hand , it possibly won’t be noticed..
But it’s an obvious crisis that should be exploited for us, not them. These crises come along one after the other and all are ignored by Liblabcon etc, and not noticed by us or any of our right wing or centre parties.
It doesn’t get any better for the lunatic in residence at Number 10. Today the Metropolitan Police have announced that Fixed Penalty Notices have been issued to 30 other people for attending parties and other gatherings in breach of Covid regulations, Boris Johnson, Carrie Johnson and Richie Sunak being amongst them. The right thing has been done by the Metropolitan Police, and now the right thing MUST be done for the future well being of this country, and that means that Boris Johnson and Richie Sunak MUST fall on their respective swords and resign. At least now we have an opportunity to get shot of these two liabilities once and for all, and get in place some people at the very top of government with a bit of integrity and common sense.
What we have here is open contempt by government ( All stratas like SAGE, the Civil Service, Quangos and others with their snouts in Tax ) laid bare in front of and for the people.. Something new should come out ofthis. Any half way party shpuld have been ready and waiting. Pathetic.
I wouldn’t be so sure Colin, this lot have been covered in oil for years. They think they are untouchable.
Totally agree with your final sentence Viv.
Viv’s comments on the increasingly untrustworthiness of the MSM remind me of Melanie Phillips observations of her time at the Guardian. As a young keen journalist the editor impressed upon her of its founding principle; ‘Comment is free but facts are sacred’! To her alarm, over the successive years it was apparent that the Guardian increasingly viewed comments (theirs) as sacred and facts as being free. She left for the Observer I believe finding herself ostracised for her views.
Ever more it is a case of trust no-one, believe nothing except that seen with one’s own eyes. There are the odd exceptions though Viv…
In one newspaper headline today it stated that a new British guided missile brought down a Russian drone in Ukraine. One might have thought looking at the headline that it was launched by a British soldier and even further down it said a ‘para-trooper’ brought it down. A clever use or words or a dangerous use of words sprung to mind. I’ll go for the latter I think. Apparently either the drone or the guided missile launcher costs £92,000 and the drone was destroyed but only the wings were blown off, so not that good then. Who writes this crap, a five year old wannabe journalist? Just one reason amongst many, why I will never waste any money on buying a newspaper. Their day has passed and one has to treat everything that is written in them with a pinch of salt…..
For your sins at least there is an ongoing record of all the lies and deception from this site and a few others and I believe that one day there will be a day of reckoning. There has to be.
Reading my post it looked like the lies were coming from here. Oops, not what I meant of course.
I’m old enough to remember investigative journalists. These were people employed by newspapers to go to far away places and report back or who were out and about in the UK cultivating sources and generally lifting carpets and pulling back curtains. The growth of the internet ended real investigative journalism. As sales of newspapers declined so did advertising revenue and all newspapers ‘let go’ their experienced, hard-nosed reporters and became small collections of ‘columnists’ sitting in smaller offices or at home, regurgitating news feeds of various sorts from Reuters to twatter. Our newspapers, now more online than not, simply wait for news to come to them. There is the occasional old-fashioned scoop as when the DT exposed MPs’ expenses, but even then it was a whistleblower sending the DT a CD out of the blue. This was not investigative journalism. If it had been the DT and others would have followed up on Parliament’s rule changes to prevent any exposure in future and not allowed them to get away with such changes as they have done.
The last true investigation I remember is Andrew Norfolk in The Times on the grooming gangs in Rotherham. It forced the authorities to finally act (but no follow up on the shameful politicians). A ‘north east’ correspondent was actually based in Leeds and simply noticed things and started poking around and then badgered the editor to publish. The so called quality press can no longer afford old fashioned reporters to be based around the country even if they have the will for it anymore. In the dying days of investgative journalism reporters like Andrew Gilligan had to be discredited. One careless remark would be seized on to smear the whole of the man. The Irish Times, believe it or not, used to have a fiercely iconoclastic reporter called Kevin Myers. Naturally, he had to go so that the IT could turn into a vapid goverment mouth piece.
Despite the internet allowing access to a plethora of sources offical and otherwise, the mainstream narrative still matters. We saw that acutely during the pandemic. The MSM did shape people’s views and behaviour to an alarming degree. Even as the number of people questionning what was going on grew, the alternative sources of opinion and analysis had no impact at all. The monthly freedom demonstrations in London – April 2021 was the largest – were only a fraction of 1% of the population. The MSM’s attendees, so to speak, involved millions.
A free, proudly independent press looks like a brief, historical aberration. So far as we ever had that in the UK it is definitley gone. Instead, it has become a vehicle for goverment ‘nudge’ units. The techniques of ‘thought control in democratic societies’ , to use Chomsky’s phrase from the seventies in his complaint about the suppression of left wing ideas (if only!), are evolving all the time. What is not clear is does it require complicit politicians, in the sense of responding to media created narratives, or a complict media following politicians’ leads?
Liz Truss is muttering about about investigating the alleged chemical attack in Mariupol and holding Putin to account. Is she noting the media created public mood and trying to curry favour with the electorate or creating it with the help of a faithful press? Black Lives Matter showed our ministers are followers as they mouthed piety after peity to show themselves on the (imagined) right side. Yet, the UK government undoubtedly dances to the American led tune, as well as siezing the opportunity for distraction, and the media is happy to oblige. Perhaps it doesn’t matter who is leading. Just a nexus.
The only counter to the West’s repudiation of itself through decolonised curricula and a woke press and corproations is in our votes. No insurgent party will form the next government and so for our votes we face no choice at all. The writing was on the wall with Enoch Powell and I don’t mean that his warnings came true. He was sidelined, discredited and in effect exiled even back then. The techniques used have evolved since and are now deadly. Douglas Murray et al can publish as many books as they like for all the difference they make. Our room 101 moment beckons. Learn to love Big Brother or else.
Indeed, we’re living not just in interesting but in increasingly more grim times.
Also, in years gone by it was normal to read publications from other countries, Russia and the Warsaw Pact countries included – simply in order to know what ‘the other side’ or indeed ‘the enemy’ was saying and thinking. One wasn’t immediately put in a drawer labelled ‘commie lover’ just because one was reading those publications. After all, “we in the West” prided ourselves on having so many papers available to ordinary citizens (with the required knowledge of languages). That was, we were told, in contrast to the Eastern Bloc states where only ‘trustworthy party comrades’ were given access to western papers.
And look where we now are … with Russian sources now even unavailable to ‘professional writers’ …
Latest betting. A betting change.
Next Conservative Leader
• Liz Truss 6/1
• Richie Soonack 44/5
• Tom Tugendhat 9/1
• Jeremy Hunt 10/1
Where is the ‘none of the above’ odds I wonder?
Be careful what you wish for!
We definitely do not want Tom Tugendhat that for sure. He is the MP in my constituency and how shall I put it, but oh, words fail me. What’s more he is a confirmed Remainer representing a Leave constituency and a bit of a Walter Mitty character who likes to play on the fact he is ex-Army and served here there and everywhere, but in fact was never in the Regular Army, but in the Reserve Army. Not quite the same….UKIP gave him a fright in 2015 and gave him a run for his money. If our very good UKIP candidate had won, at least we would have had a proper Conservative in place.
The trouble is – who DO we want as PM? The only one I can think of is Ian Duncan Smith, and as he’s done it before I doubt he’d be willing to undergo another dose.
Viv’s article spot on. The problem is how to get the public to read it ,ie the people who need to wake up to what our Press has become.
Yes Mary. I do post a link to the site quite regularly and have had some positive comments but I don’t know if it turns into “bums on seats”.
The primary answer should be good education. But. Have you examined what they teach in O level english these days. It’s bad. And makes things worse. ( I took my youngest through it. It’s clever . no doubt about that. )
I wonder where harryagain armitage is?
Surely he has something to say about the noble NATO trained Ukrainian army?
He might say, how wonderful that uS weapons supplied, British weapons supplied, Uncle Tom Cobbly un-all weapons supplied, plucky Ukrainian army is showing so much restraint.
With all that one way only, exclusively Russian atrocities, such as prisoner torture, rape, bombing, burning people alive, wholesale infrastructure destruction and worse, of Ukraine – the provocation to retaliate must be overwhelming.
But no. Ukrainians are whiter than white, stoically putting up with the outrageous slings and .556 mm arrows of (Ras)Putin the Russian psychopath’s army of deserters and underage conscripts.
Now back to twitting.
Brigadier Harry Armitage is very probably in the Ukraine training their troops now in the use of guided missile launchers, or maybe he is playing with his toy lead soldiers in his bedroom……Either or.
Having trouble posting.
TG- Did you look at the O level Maths.
Six times seven equals the blue box.
Bicotte at 10.22 am.
Wasn’t 42 ‘the answer’ in Hitch Hikers Guide?
PB- Good one! Ha! That was the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything (from memory).
This board is chummy rather than chuckley!
You are right, but the thing on my mind was a book I have just finished, and recommend.
It is self published this year by *Glenn Beck* and called ‘the Great Reset’.
Self publishing falls in to expose media falsehoods as observed by Viv.
So obviously factual, no one would publish it due to the great reset retribution one would get – read section on banks. American slant but v good for all that.
Many others have copied the front cover and similar, with same typeface and so on, but put Summary in front of the title. They are pro reset spoilers. Dont waste your money on them.
Read it, and all the photo-wind stuff, eco-doom stuff, reason for buying up land and so on becomes clear.
The Big Thing he whacks on about in most chapters is ‘Dont Take My Word For It. Here are the references, read them for yourself!’.
But what of sums? Glenn B makes mention of teaching methods in school. Mathematics is one and he uses that
‘equals blue box’ style comment to illustrate teaching failings when you get to the real world.
Viv, everything you predict will sadly come true. Once again Joe public is being played by TPTB, and once again the majority are falling for it. However pound to a pinch of salt, these unverified reports will be dropped tomorrow just like all the other alleged atrocities. Just give your self a knowing smile and a have a little chuckle, it will make you feel better.
