Whitehall – the nest of supercilious mandarins who don’t do their jobs properly!
There’s one main issue I’ll look at today – but it is one which ought to have repercussions beyond the current scandal. Thanks to a whistleblower who has firstly not remained anonymous and who has since quit his job, we’ve learned that during the evacuation of British people from Afghanistan there was nobody ‘at the helm’ in Whitehall. Nobody!
I don’t mean Mr Raab who was dragged through the mud at the time because he was on holidays ‘in the Mediterranean’ – how dare he! – and worse, he and his family stayed in a ‘luxury hotel’ – what crime when most readers of the MSM are planning for holidays in the Bermudas or somewhere eco-friendly in Thailand.
It was worse than that. The top mandarins of the top Departments of State all were on holidays as well:
“Also off at the same time were the national security adviser Sir Stephen Lovegrove, plus David Williams and Matthew Rycroft, the heads of the Ministry of Defence and Home Office respectively.” (link)
Let that sink in: the mandarins whose departments were concerned with organising and administrating the evacuation of people from Afghanistan were on holidays, all at the same time, at the time when the Taliban was taking over and had already overrun most of the country. I’ll not look at the way this evacuation unfolded earlier this year, there are acres of reports and comments all over the interwebs. Just remember that the ‘official’ evacuation started on August 14th 2021 and that the Taliban had started to retake province after province from July 2021 onwards (link).
We wondered at the time if Biden had told Johnson and the other NATO Allies that this, and the abrupt withdrawal of all US troops and personnel was planned to start at the beginning of July 2021. Clearly, the MSM had inklings, so obviously I’d expect that the Whitehall mandarins knew and were hopefully better informed than the MSM to whom ‘sources’ doled out snippets. Do keep those dates in mind for the following paragraphs while I concentrate on the Whitehall ‘leaders’ involved because it shows the insouciance with which these ‘ennobled’ men are dealing with critical issues affecting our country.
First, have a look at the CVs of those mandarins. They read like a merry-go-round between Whitehall Offices. Oh, they all acquired experiences in various areas – a bit like ‘on-the-job’ training, but the main point which left me dumbstruck was this: they all were in their particular job for less than a year when this crisis struck.
Here’s the Foreign Office Head Honcho, Sir Philip Barton KCMG OBE – tug your forelock or curtsey, you peasants! His official CV published on the government website is a bit obscure here, but he must have been promoted to his position sometime in August 2020.
Then there’s Sir Stephen Lovegrove. He is ‘only’ the National Security Adviser’. He’s certainly been around the block, as permanent secretary in the MOD and the Department for Energy and Climate Change. He received his posting in March 2021.
Next, we have Matthew Rycroft CBE who became head mandarin at the Home Office in March 2020. As Permanent Secretary he’s the mandarin who is supposedly the hinge between the minister and the department. ‘His’ minister, as we all know, is Priti Patel – and hasn’t she and her department dealt brilliantly with the invasion of illegal migrant coming from France – not!
Finally there is David Williams at the MOD who received his appointment in April 2021. It stuck me forcefully how the 2021 appointees nevertheless went on holidays after only a scant few months in their new posting. Sir Philip Barton had only been in his posting for one year.
We might well ask: are the workings of the great offices of state so interchangeable that anyone can be posted anywhere, especially to top positions, keeping their holiday entitlements? Do they not have to inform themselves of possible threats to the Nation? Clearly, they seem to believe in their own superior knowledge of affairs permitting them to let their lives go on ‘as normal’ while events, always ‘unforeseeable’, overtake them. That can happen to the best of Sirs, can’t it!
That one of those mandarins whose departments were closely involved in the Afghan evacuation was on holidays – fine, that might be happenstance. That all four of them were away looks more like ‘enemy action’. I shudder to think what might happen if a spark were to ignite the dangerous posturing games played by Mr Biden both in regard to Russia and China – at one and the same time, no less.
Clearly, neither Sir Philip B. nor Sir Stephen L. noticed any possible threat coming up over the horizon. Nor did they think they might conceivably have been needed to steer their particular department. After all, they have their minions, minions like that whistleblower Raphael Marshall. Here’s a good opinion piece written by Ross Clark to which I don’t need to add anything.
The final cherry on the top of this unsavoury cake is that Sir Philp B. left for his holidays on the 9th of August (link) – a time where the poor sods in the army were already scrambling to get the evacuation running. Yes, let that sink in as well! His ‘excuse’? He had ‘put in place covers’ for his absence … and anyway, there’s always the Minister who will carry the can, not least because ‘sources’, anonymous of course, will judiciously feed little poisonous drops of spin to the MSM who can then bay for the head of that Minister.
This, dear friends, is how Whitehall works. We’ll find this attitude, this insouciance, this disregard for anything and anybody incommodating their cushy jobs in all those other Whitehall departments – or we would if our MSM would do their duty and do research rather than regurgitate mandarin spin.
They never do – for example they’ve been very careful not to look more deeply into that evacuation of the dog shelter, dogs, lock, stock and barrel which, we now learn, did take up space and time and resources which couldn’t be used to evacuate people. But when Princess Nut-Nuts drops ‘a word’, things will happen – see the juicy details here.
This is why we are in the ongoing covid mess, this is why we’re in the coming ‘net zero’ mess: the mandarins are making it so, their ministers are only puppets whose strings they pull. Those ministers might glory in their shiny titles, but their mandarins know full well who will get the chop when things go wrong – and it won’t be them.
It is they who sell constant spin to the MSM, it is they who knife their ministers in the back, it is they who govern this country with the help of the Westminster swamp critters populating the MSM. Here’s a final example of how they work: “Sources close to Liz Truss, Raab’s successor, said Barton retained her full support and that his job was not in danger.” (link, paywalled). Oh really? Are the chief editors in the MSM really just a bunch of gullible, credulous eejits believing every word they’re told by ‘sources’? Why should we believe the lot of them, forelocks dutifully tugged?
These Westminster critters, mandarins, MSM, politicians, dare to tell us how to live our lives, from mask mandates, lockdowns and enforced jab rules to heating, energy use and what we ought to eat! Ruining the wealth of the nation as the go along, ensconced in their £158,000 p.a. jobs and gold plated pensions? On our tax money!
When are our MPs going to do their jobs properly? Scrutinising government doesn’t mean only questioning the Ministers, it means taking a long, cold and hard look at the real string-pullers: the Mandarins of Whitehall.
Off with their precious mandarin heads, I say – figuratively only, naturally!
The saddest part is ……………….you’re right. What ‘we’ do……………..?
You attack the easiest ( lowest ?) rungs of the power ( Political ) Ladder with information.
I look forward to revenge being very sweet one day.
A part of me says push, push, push your luck. We could do with them going right off the track not seeing their danger and slowing down a bit to duck and dive. Then I think of the Expenses scandal 2009 and realise it doesn’t really matter what they do. In fact it would be an amusing challenge and brighten their lives to have to climb out of a really deep hole.
The only real hope is a complete collapse of everything and an awakening of the people to strive for a real world where proper democracy can live and society believes in individualism fair play and personal freedoms and responsibilities.
Alas that will not happen either.
Unless! there is real pain and sharp change to the detriment of personal wellbeing and wealth.
When we have nothing we may be free.
The sub-heading is great Viv. Thank you for what you and Debbie do.
kim. Sounds like here you are advocating a collapse into anarchy, like I’ve almost suggested in 9/12’s betrayal.
But would we get that ideal real world you long for?
I don’t think so because it didn’t happen this first time, did it.
Unfortunately human beings are just not capable, even now, of creating that ideal real world.
I’ve said even now but I actually think it is getting worse not better.
There are some Christian writers who believe that not only did Jesus show us the way it can happen but that it actually has started to happen by his death. See Tom Wright, ‘Simply Christian’.
I am not totally convinced by him either.
I’m a pessimist, so all I can see is that something does seem to be happening, so there probably will be some very big change sooner or later.
And it does not look good to me.
The present situation of the constitution is perilous. The House of commons ( PM ) through constant blabbing and agitation, and as such has taken over many of the pillars of the state. Starting a long time ago with the Treasury (Control of the money is a Key to any takeover ) )… Followed in turn by the Police ( Home Office), the three Armed Forces ( MoD ), Foreign Office (FO ), Emasculation of the Church, |Education, and the House of Lords using subserviance ( HoL ). etc
Luckily, the Civil Service has maintained it independence and only the Queen can sack anyone, luckily, . Because :- The Civil Service runs the country. Not the PM or MP’ s ( The MP’s and etc only talk and produce far too many laws. The have almost no authority). The Civil Service has the responsiblity and the authority to carry the laws out.
UNfortunately, The only bunch with spare time and the gift of the gab, and overambitious is the Politicians not doing their jobs properly, and attempting to increase their market share.
Unless and untill this is sorted and remedied. We must get ready to support Charlie, William and Kate and Camilla.
Churchill is the only PM who understood this and worked in tandem with King George. Ever since the ignorant and destructive bunch have assumed that it’s just tradition.
That’s the bare bones of the popular target of our ignorant foolish public who the Queen looks out for in the face of the howling hyenas.
Unfortunately of course. the power of senior Civil Servants is vast, Not just their own depertments of thousands but also their Public servants , soldiers, police men, teachers and ( Idiotic ) Universities,Social workers.etc
There are nearly 5 (5,000,000 ) Civil servants.
I have no idea how many are paid by the state ( Public servants ) I would guess 12 million ( 12,000,000)
There’s real available power potential for the unscrupulous.. Are we surprised they leak.
Error .0.5 million ( 500,000 ) not 5miillion
Civil servants – sacking.

As for the Queen – she signed the 1972 European Communities Act and Maastricht in 92 without blinking. The whole establishment from the very top is rotten I am afraid. The Queen knew exactly what she was doing.
Jake B.. Except there’s another layer of courtiers (Councillors ?) . . surround the Queen. And think how the union would like to control the Civil Service.. Although the hackneyed ( Money or strike )hand looks i little thin.
T G Spokes Courtiers, Councillors may surround the Queen but at the end of the day the buck stops with her. She unambiguously broke her Coronation Oath whereas if she refused it would have been Ted Heath ( ‘this does not affect our national sovereignty’ ) and the Tory Party who would have been exposed as the treasonous rats they are and possibly the whole Tory European project would have been consigned to the dustbin where it rightly belonged.
Jake Bennett at 7.04pm I’d forgotten about that sacking of civil servants. There is not enough of it is there!
The public sector is running rings around the Government because the Government is led by a clown (Mr Macron is correct). At the end of the day we have a Government with an 80 seat majority – the buck stops at the PMs door. But we have a PM and his party that is not up to the role of clearing out the Augean stables of Whitehall because his own personal stable and that of his party is no different.
15,000 afghan migrants with Whitehall WFH and not even answering their emails. Sounds like we got off lightly. It is 15 thousand too many but Boris thinks its Dunkirk again. See the problem?
It has to be said that we have an absolute dolt for a prime minister. The man is utterly untrustworthy, doesn’t tell the truth, and has few man management skills to control and manage his own party, personal office let alone his shambles of a government. Whilst he faffs around the edges doing very little about the real problems that face this country, the European Union continue to dictate to us even though we have supposedly left that block, he has allowed the European Commission to annexe a part of the UK with different rules to the rest of the country, he sits idly by whilst thousands of illegal migrants are allowed to waltz into the country without documents of any description giving them free accommodation, mobile phones, legal aid, and pocket money, whilst insisting the indigenous population have to be masked up wherever they go and take lateral flow tests before going abroad or coming back, and will not be satisfied until all our civil liberties and freedoms have been trashed in the name of a virus that has still only affected a small proportion of the country. Johnson has learnt nothing since being in office, and has been a major let down to all of us. Whilst I have very little time for Kier Starmer at the best of times, he is right about one thing Johnson does NOT have the moral authority to lead this country and should resign his position with immediate effect. So sick and tired of this numpty we’re lumbered with……….
Apologies to mary and others, I got confused yesterday between 2 separate issues.
a) the ongoing Covid Dictatorship which is against the Nuremberg Code.
b) the need for the strongest possible legislation to stop illegal immigration aided by lawyers – (yes process them off shore).
Meanwhile, Robert Largan M.P. CON. expects me to read and reply to his email if I am still without electricity !!!
Good Betrayal today Viv, as usual.
Well look at this, more and more information is coming out about the vaccines. Firstly there’s this brief interview with Saint Jacinda Ardern where she makes it plain that there will be no end to the vaccination program and she’ll keep coming for the unvaxxed.
“Ardern’s endless vaccination program”
https://rumble.com/vqe5li-ardern-endless-vaccination-program.html
This from the Daily Examiner in new Zealand:
“Pfizer Post-Authorisation Information Revealed – Implications for Public Policy”
https://www.thedailyexaminer.co.nz/pfizer-post-authorisation-information-revealed-implications-for-public-policy/?fbclid=IwAR0iTwdssUIGGIrDp0Db8xgX12Erc_Z6ikzYDbZ0BnWiHTokLU-0XEpN3YI
Apparently Pfizer have been ordered by a court in the US to release a paper which reveals a vast array of previously undisclosed vaccine adverse effects and many of them a very serious.
Ardern I think is going to be held responsible for this I think, we’ll have to wait and see but it’s not looking good for her, she’ll try and wiggle out of it somehow.
The same thing is likely to happen to our politicians too, there will be some very awkward questions to be answered.
