Those using this site know only too well the importance of self-determination. From self-determination come all manner of freedoms and options.
Humans are social animals like monkeys. As soon as we introduce common unity we make compromises and allow interdependency. Those compromises make us vulnerable as individuals and as communities. Indeed being an individual also has its hardships. So there is no easy answer: we cannot have it both ways. Life comes with responsibilities.
The first step to self-determination is to question what one sees, what one is told, what one believes, and what one is told to believe. This pragmatic scepticism allows the process of scrutinising perceived reality or opening one’s eyes. Perhaps they happen in tandem. After those two basic actions we have to use our newly found vision to look around at the social and political landscape. We can then see how the landscape shapes up from the perspective of independence.
This article is about something you may have noticed in this landscape. Without wanting to state the obvious there are many anomalies, some minor, some very influential, others fundamental.
Nationally the independence of the sovereign state acts as a firewall against global megalomaniacs and the ideological viruses. National independence is an important outer layer of our cultural immune system.
Regional independence allows for those decisions to be made that suit the peculiarities in different parts of the nation. Then there is the independence granted to communities. All of these forms of independence work with subsidiarity to achieve equitable decision making and allowing participation at all levels of society. These are layers of our cultural immune system. Influences are blocked from overrunning our culture and way of life with viral overload. Those viral influences are not lost but absorbed and assimilated in a manageable dose to acquire the benefits of evolution.
The most important level in this analogy is in the independence of the individual. Individual independence is like the body’s immune system at a cellular level, which is the final line of defence. The ability to have an opinion, debate a topic, to speak openly of one’s understanding, and to live in a fashion that is comfortable, with the proviso that others are not harmed.
That seems a reasonable analogy and as such will be accepted for now.
The anomalies we start seeing when objectively looking at our environment are the lies that have been told. The real world is not as described. We are told we live in a democracy. We are told that we have a world leading health service. We are told that we have equality in Justice. We are told that our education system is apolitical. We are told that we are making the climate catastrophically warmer. We are told that we are experiencing a pandemic that forbids basic freedoms. These statements do not stand up to scrutiny, they do not even come close to the truth. While these issues are argued our society falls apart before our eyes confirming the lies. The more we look the more we see, and hopefully the more we see the more we look, that is, with the courage to keep our eyes open.
The nations of the world are suffering from a global cultural pandemic where most countries are sick. Deceit is just that, and those that were thought of as the Free Nations of the world are the centres of that deceit. The others are probably what we knew them to be.
The outer levels of defence have been breached and corrupted. At a cellular level individuals have been coerced and frightened, losing their ability to think independently.
Our civilisation is failing.
In Alexander Tytler’s (1747–1813) portrayal of the stages of civilisation (see here) we stand between the seventh and the last stage. The eighth stage is a return to bondage.
It is easy to cherry-pick the words of great thinkers and we may be beyond the ‘point of no return as depicted in stage seven. But Tytler is also attributed as saying
“Nations always progressed through the following sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage”.
So is there hope? People in bondage lose the virtues necessary to fight for their independence but we can argue that there is always hope. Hope may be found at a higher level, as a faith in Nature and the courage of the human spirit.
How did this happen?
There are lots of words none of which make easy reading. Complacency, laziness, arrogance, apathy, greed, selfishness, all the qualities of the doomed.
We can dismiss the dependency of the child and the interdependency of a community, but a lack of independent thinking and critical analysis in adults is indicative of a lack of responsibility. A lack of responsibility demonstrates a lack of freedom and so we go on in the viscous merry-go-round that has tyranny woven into its fabric.
Medea the Goddess of Illusion has been reincarnated as the Media. Technology has undermined individual self-esteem and will power, allopathic medicine has disconnected us from Mother Nature, finance has humiliated us, and poor governance has led us into the wilderness as a damaged, blinded and confused tribe.
If we have been lied to, then we have been living a lie. The false reality that is the lie will be just a starter for what is to follow.
Our humanity will be taken from us as we suffer the tyranny of technology, bioengineering and social engineering that will be mandated for our own well-being. Seduced and weakened with our privacy and individuality stripped away, independence may be a thing of the past, its very existence eventually to be denied.
“Alexa can I go to the shops now?” Alexa answers “No!”
The future may be a Virtual Reality where we will own nothing but be happy living the lie designed for you by someone else.
Suffering is inevitable but with vision, imagination and a return to Nature we may yet navigate a way through.

Then – Alexa can I go to the shops now. Well, I’d always regarded Alexa as a rather pointless ‘toy’ but you are right. What is the difference between that and a smart phone with a test and trace app.
Yes Technology and Pharmaceuticals have become our enemies.
Hope lies in a return to Nature?
I suppose this individual is doing my best.
But what hope for my nation? Let alone all humanity.
When my wife and I joined UKIP in 2009, I forget what particularly dastardly event had driven us there, but we certainly saw and regarded UKIP as ” the last or only hope”
I think it was that we were going to be embroiled forever in the United States of Europe – and look how that turned out, well! We do have some sort of Independence, which we do have to work like hell to ensure.
So Kim’s conclusion of Hope remaining does encourage me, although I’m sure I won’t be still around to partake in the national release.
If we are at the stage of 7 plus, it’s like alcoholism we haven’t reached the bottom yet and I believe only when that is reached recovery can begin.
The Network was released some 45 years ago. Whether intentional or not the movie foresaw the meteoric advance of globalisation and the politicisation and power of western corporations as they got into bed with big government.
The ‘world is a corporation’ boardroom speech could just as well be Bill Gates talking to The Fat Boy telling him how the world really works.

Thanks for that, Frederica. I believe we (you and I) are of a related vintage, which means we very much speak the same language and understand in similar ways. BUT it has been well said that ‘if we continue to do as we’ve always done, we’re likely to get what we’ve always got.’ The question to follow that statement has to be: “Is that good enough?” By common consent readers here seem to be agreed that it IS NOT good enough. But we stop short of providing the next generation with any form of acceptable solutions.
When I say ‘acceptable solutions’ I don’t mean easy, throw-away, bar-room opinions. I mean solutions devised after thoughtful reading, discussion, testing and so on. Taking to the streets isn’t an acceptable solution but that’s what tends to attract some young people who want action.
I believe we continue in error and do harm to ourselves by viewing our global and national well-being by merely harking back to ‘what was’ . Young people have little time for our nostalgia and they will damn us forever if we cannot show that we want to rectify the woes we have allowed on our watch. THAT MEANS devising workable and acceptable solutions for and by ‘the people’ rather than for and by ‘the state’.. I haven’t got the answers and the answers won’t be found if we merely want to ‘go back to normal’. So-called normal has brought us into this mess. In my humble opinion, the exit has to be something ‘abnormal’. WE need a complete about-face, which includes more attention to family and less attention to whimsical ego, and that’s just for starters.

Great article Kim! I notice that the. Comments under the Tears for Fears track are mostly talking about how good the 80s were. I was only thinking yesterday how lucky I feel to to have been born so I enjoyed the 60s. So it appears that there was a twenty year window when life was actually worth living! Can’t say much for the current era I’m afraid. White is black; up is down and wrong is right! `it’s OK to say you are a woman when you’re really still a man and because you really hate women you get jobs where you can do women the most harm! Police are only interested in harassing people who will not conform to PC State Policy rather than dealing with crime and criminals! The judiciary has long ago been bought and paid for and are the servants of the State in every way! Whatever kind of a sick world is that?
The Alexander Tyler piece is illuminating. Isn’t it strange that so much wisdom comes from those who have long passed on? Quotations from the wise are often listed. What madness that nobody ever seems to learn from these wise people so that the same mistakes are not made again!
