Elephants now come in all colours: white, pink, green …

 

As we slowly slide into the last weekend of the summer – the Autumnal Equinox is on the 23rd of this month – the news~’makers’ and news~’writers’ still seem to be in holiday mode, or are WFH to such an extent that they haven’t a clue about what’s going on in the real world.

Let’s start with the selection of the front pages of the print editions: “Newspaper headlines: ‘Patients in danger’ and Starmer’s ‘dirty deal'”. (link). The ‘dirty deal’ refers to the front page of the Express, according to which Ms Braverman criticised Starmer’s plan as ‘dirty’.

We noted yesterday that Sir K announced he’d ‘crush the people smugglers’ by making a deal with the EU. Even the grauniad doesn’t seem to be too pleased, placing a report at the top of their front page saying that both Left and Right criticise that plan.

And just like that, as if we’re back in the good old Brexit days, we read in The Times:

“Sir Keir Starmer’s plans to seek a new migrants return deal with the EU have been dismissed as “delusional” by European diplomats as a row broke out over how to tackle the small boats crisis. EU sources said there was “absolutely no question of helping the UK” until the bloc had resolved its own internal efforts to reform its “broken” asylum-sharing system.” (link, paywalled)

Oh dear. Excuse me for gloating! Did Sir Kneeler really think Brussels would receive his electioneering proposals with open arms? In the same report we learn that Brussels is desperately trying to create a ‘we’re all in it together’ scheme to distribute ‘poor refugees’, which allegedly means that ‘the rich countries’ were to receive 120,000 ‘poor refugees’ each year.

Sadly, certain ultra-extreme-far-right populist’ countries in central Europe, i.e. Poland and Hungary, aren’t having it. Can someone explain to Starmer that there’s no difference between taking in 80,000 dinghy drivers or 120,000 EU-designated ‘poor refugees’ since our country is full already?

Meanwhile, The Mirror howled on their front page this morning about another ‘Tory Betrayal’. This referred to ‘news’ in The Times that:

“Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt are weighing up plans to scrap or further delay the troubled HS2 railway line between Birmingham, Manchester and the northeast of England. The Treasury has drawn up options for potential cost savings that could be made by either ending the line in Birmingham or pushing back construction of HS2’s northern leg still further.’ (link, paywalled)

Saving money is obviously terrible when it means a precious white elephant cannot be maintained, and never mind the handy outcry: ‘cost-of-living crisis’ nor the cost for maintaining all those ‘poor refugees’. There’s more:

“A Whitehall source said that scrapping the line between Birmingham to Manchester — which could save up to £34 billion — would free up funding for other transport infrastructure projects in the north and Midlands. The eastern leg of the project that would link HS2 to the East Coast mainline is also in jeopardy.” (link, paywalled)

Such betrayal! Someone ought to tell the Mirror and other lefty MSM authors that growing and keeping elephants – be they HS2 white, be they ‘immigration’ pink – costs a lot of money. I’m sure the Net Zero fantasists will weigh in as well because “we” don’t need no cars and therefore no investment in  maintaining motorways, never mind rebuilding public transport. 

I leave you with a report in The Times, headlined: “Susan Hall: Tory mayoral candidate liked tweet praising Enoch Powell” (link, paywalled). I’m mentioning this astounding piece because the photo editor – someone on work experience, perhaps? – came out with this caption for a photo of Enoch Powell gracing yon report: “Enoch Powell was infamous for his “rivers of blood” speech”.

When one of the smartphone generation looks up the meaning of ‘infamous’, the first definition coming up on google search is from the Merriam-Webster dictionary: 

“having a reputation of the worst kind : notoriously evil. an infamous traitor. 2. : causing or bringing infamy : disgraceful.” (link)

Clearly Mr Powell must have been eating kittens live on telly or summink! There’s not one word that the collective Left in the London MSM made Mr Powell ‘infamous’ and thus gave the incipient Uniparty a reason to ded his career. Not mentioned either is his opposition to joining the then ‘Common Market’, the project of his then PM, Mr Heath. And still, even after all these decades, ‘liking tweets’ praising him is a crime.

Meanwhile, I’m gloating about the EU’s swift response to Sir Kneeler’s attempt to ‘crush people smugglers’. We’ll see if he offers to take in all those ‘poor refugees’ which Hungary and Poland won’t take, in addition to the 120,000 which Brussels would ‘give’ us, creating even more opportunities for Powell’s prediction to come true.

That’s all I have for today. I wonder when all those busy virtue signallers will notice that creating and maintaining elephants – white, pink, green – comes with financial burdens which more and more people, here and in the EU, are no longer prepared to bear. Have a good day.
