On Monday evening, the DT published an essay by Lord Sumption which should have caused a major debate. This important essay has the stark title “Liberal democracy will be the biggest casualty of this pandemic” (paywalled link). That alone ought to have created a reaction in the MSM – but the 500 or so comments under that essay were all there was to be found. Not one (!) of our covid MSM even mentioned the essay, not one opinion piece in those publications took notice, not even to refute Lord Sumption’s arguments. Not even the subtitle, “The state’s unprecedented overreach has fundamentally altered the unwritten conventions that underpin our political system” (paywalled link), was incentive enough to provoke an outcry.
Let’s start at the beginning and follow the arguments Lord Sumption brings. Firstly, here he sets the scene:
“The biggest casualty of the lockdown will not be the closed pubs, restaurants and shops and the crippled airlines. It will not be our once-thriving musical, theatrical and sporting culture. It will not even be the wreckage of our economy. These are terrible things to behold. But the biggest casualty of all will be liberal democracy.
Liberal democracy is a remarkable but fragile achievement. It is an attempt to meet the challenge of making governments answerable to the people, while protecting personal freedom. This is hard to do. People crave security and look to the state to provide it. To do this, the state needs extensive powers over its citizens. This is why, in democracies across the world, the power of the state has continually increased. It is also why liberal democracy is the exception rather than the rule. Democracies are easily subverted and often fail.” (paywalled link)
Next, Jonathan Sumption gives a general description of what we were used to in our free society:
“What makes us a free society is that, although the state has vast powers, there are conventional limits on what it can do with them. The limits are conventional because they do not depend on our laws but on our attitudes. There are islands of human life which are our own, a personal space into which the state should not intrude without some altogether exceptional justification.
Liberal democracy breaks down when frightened majorities demand mass coercion of their fellow citizens, and call for our personal spaces to be invaded. These demands are invariably based on what people conceive to be the public good. They all assert that despotism is in the public interest.” (paywalled link)
Strong words, those! Haven’t we all seen the rise of the covid ‘police’ – not just the police forces hunting lockdown ‘breakers’, but the daily occasions where some people have taken on the role of lockdown stasi? In the following paragraphs Lord Sumption relates how we came to be where we are:
“The problem is perfectly encapsulated in a recent interview with Professor Neil Ferguson, whose projections were used to justify the first lockdown last March. Before that, as Prof Ferguson related in that interview, Sage had concluded that the Chinese lockdown had worked but was out of the question in Europe. “It’s a communist, one-party state, we said. We couldn’t get away with it in Europe, we thought. And then Italy did it. And we realised we could … If China had not done it, the year would have been very different.” (paywalled link)
Ah – so not only were we put under the cosh because of Ferguson’s discredited model, he was clearly following his lefty agenda. Firstly, Lord Sumption refutes this ‘China strategy’ in no uncertain terms and points the finger next at the covid government which accepted this ‘China strategy’:
“China is not a liberal democracy. It is a totalitarian state. It treats human beings as so many tools of state policy. There is no personal space which the state cannot invade at will. Liberal democracies have good reasons of political morality for not wishing to be like China. Considering this issue only in terms of whether lockdowns are effective against pandemics, and whether governments can “get away with it”, serves to reduce liberty from a major principle to a mere question of expediency. We have to assume, since the Government took his advice, that ministers agreed with Prof Ferguson. Certainly that was the position of the senior minister who recently told me that liberal democracy was an unsuitable model for dealing with a pandemic. Something more “Napoleonic” was needed, said he.” (paywalled link)
It beggars belief that this even needed to be said! It’s even more incomprehensible that Lord Sumption actually has to point out why this ‘approach’ is so pernicious:
“Many people believe that it is OK to be like China for a time, because when the crisis ends we can go back to being like Britain again. These people are making a serious mistake. We cannot switch in and out of totalitarianism at will. Because a free society is a question of attitude, it is dead once the attitude changes.
A society in which oppressive control of every detail of our lives is unthinkable except when it is thought to be a good idea, is not free. It is not free while the controls are in place. And it is not free after they are lifted, because the new attitude will allow the same thing to happen again whenever there is enough public support.
Covid-19 is not unique. There will be other epidemics. Some will be worse. Other issues will pose similar dilemmas, from terrorism and climate change at one extreme to obesity and censorship of politically incorrect opinion at the other. A threshold has now been crossed. A big taboo has gone. Other governments will say that the only question that matters is whether it works and whether they can “get away with it”. In a world ruled by the empire of fear, the answer will usually be “yes”.” (paywalled link)
Indeed – and the examples Lord Sumption’s listed above, of how this or indeed any next government will use these oppressive control instruments, should make us not afraid but fiercely angry! Here are Lord Sumption’s next points which are irrefutable:
“We already have a striking example. The vaccine, which was supposed to make the lockdown unnecessary, has become a reason for keeping it in force. Because there is now an exit route, we are told that it doesn’t matter how far away it is. Infections, hospitalisations and deaths are plunging, but millions who are at virtually no risk are being kept in house imprisonment. This is being done mainly because a selective regime of controls would be too difficult for the state to enforce. Coercion quickly becomes an object in itself.
Liberty is not an absolute value but it is a critically important one. Of all freedoms, the freedom to interact with other human beings is perhaps the most valuable. It is a basic human need, the essential condition of human happiness and creativity.” (paywalled link)
Who could even doubt this assertion? Where are those who would still insist that “we” don’t need Liberty because “we” must become ‘covid-free’ first? Here are the concluding paragraphs:
“The Prime Minister claims to believe in liberty and to find the current measures distasteful. Actions speak louder than words, and I am afraid that I do not believe him. He is too much of a populist to go against public sentiment. He lacks the moral and political stature to lead opinion rather than follow it. I hope that I am wrong about this. But we shall soon know. In the next week Boris Johnson has an opportunity to show that he has some principles after all.” (paywalled link)
Sadly, we all know by now that Lord Sumption isn’t wrong in his diagnosis of the PM’s character. We all know by now that he’s a follower – of ‘advice’ by unelected professors who’ve been hiding their lefty activists’ policies behind ‘science’ – a ‘science’ which is being questioned daily by those who still dare to stand up against the Covid Politburo propaganda.
Sumption?
Yes!
But one gigantic Yawn from me. Why?
I see much , persistent, moaning and groaning; complaining and comment; high dudgeon expressed and many a “My’ Oh! My!”.
The ‘learned Lord’ preaches….but when it comes to commitment? When it comes to addressing the practical solution… Nothing. Gornisht! Zilch!
What is NOT and never present?
ANY form of PRACTICAL solution. But – in our present insane state, universally, both Government and the population, all I see and hear is futile ‘informed’ comment. And not a solution in sight.
Pray, WHERE is the solution? Is the solution found in maintaining the Status Quo?
Rubbish and balderdash. Those who may have a modicum of power and/or influence……..what do they tell us or advocate? Eff all, that’s what.
Do they perhaps imagine that by some miracle the power and age-old influence of the Tories or Socialists will somehow dissolve and they suddenly self-destruct?
Now….listen in. I can “talk the hind legs off a donkey” given the space and time……….here’s the big BUT.
I’m eighty-four. NOT forty-eight.
Don’t misunderstand me, I ain’t finished yet…….by quite a long way.
On the other hand I am unlikely to be able to spend the twenty-odd years Nigel spent on HIS dream.
I will repeat this until there is not another Political breath in my body.
We need a troupe of Farages, a regiment of Battens, and an army of those enlightened people of ‘the right’.
We don’t need a dozen fragmented and easily defeated inconsequential Parties.
Purely and simply …….if the commitment is to break the stranglehold of the arrogant, self-centred Tories and Socialist ……
There MUST be a coalition of The Right……throw away the introverted futile navel-gazing of the past…..interminable fourth place.
Prepare a very limited Provisional Manifesto on those elementary targets we on the Right propose to use to drag our country from the grip,of both the Elite of The Tories, and the Losers of the Left………and move towards a real powerful Right-Wing, so as to wrestle power from those who eternally assume their right to governance.
It COULD be done.
Mrpaul5a. My word, I do understand your frustration!
Especially as I have just read an email from Dept Health and Care, full of twaddle about how they must not rush to remove lockdown restrictions.
Patience friend. Difficult, isn’t it, knowing we have not much time left to see a solution come to pass.
Probably all those people you mention ARE concerned about the Tories and Labour both intent on destroying our fundamental liberties. But when you come to think about it, they have previously tackled individual issues – EU, immigration etc.
The Covid Dictatorship has landed since then. Also it has struck world wide.
Not that I care how other nations deal with the so called pandemic. I only care about Britain/UK.
Probably, for now it is best to support each INDIVIDUAL speaking out for our fundamental liberties and also those each speaking out about Britain’s Sovereignty, rather than expect one Party to spring up covering exactly those issues we see as important.
Patiently chip away at the problem. We’ll get there in the end. (I hope!)
Viv. You are a marvel. I don’t know exactly how you bring stuff to us from behind the paywall but I suspect it involves a great deal of typing it out – very hard work, thank you.
I’m glad to see Lord Sumption is attacking BJ on this fundamental principle. (While reminding us of where Ferguson got his ‘inspiration’.)
seconded
Thirded. It is possible that you just might have noticed I am not perfect at typing. The agony of trying to put stuff on paper ( Or anywhere really ) excruciates me. You all have my unstinted admiration and I read all your outpourings, (Even Colins ).
However, Mr Paul ( are you the RR mr Paul ?), It needs just two of em to get them together, pause their rabid and groundless and frankly ludicrous ambitions and work together. without any loss of magnificence, wisdom, or beauty to add bottom and weight to viewpoints.and general beliefs.
Once the benefits of two of their highnesses do it, it may escalate .
Does that sound pompous? Sorry !
I am pretty sure that at least two who I have met, agree in general terms , but have personal investments in a particular Protest / Agenda / belief and perhaps worry that their particular agenda could be overwhelmed by more aggressive equals. So., this aint rocket science as they say. Try running a factory with Accountants at war with Sales and both hating Research or Production or Subsidiaries etc. Many people are capable of it , it just needs their common purpose.hammering in.
Was I alone in seeing the smirk on Ferguson ? Was i alone in detecting Ferguson specifying what could be open , and when ?
His sars forecast was total hysteria too.
Do not vote for lockdown parties.. its all we can do , unless Sumption can lead a legal overtunning of Covid decress, as in Holland.
Then you and others will have to vote for either Reform UK or Heritage Party in the local elections
…….and UKIP
Yes, but they haven’t got a hope in hell. The brand is way too toxic, but what else is there to say which hasn’t been said so many times before, I have lost count. Apart from that the infrastructure (activist base) has gone along with many branches. Its time to get behind the strongest voice in the crowd.
Will be delighted if there is an alternative to Lib/Lab/Con on my ballot paper but I am not holding my breath. NOTA is more likely option.
Do you seriously think they are going to allow us to have local elections? They won’t risk having to face the peoples’ anger. In London, Khan has already over-stayed his welcome by a year with little comment, and he’ll continue wrecking our country past May and nobody will do anything to stop him.
The simple answer to your question is yes. The Conservatives have been planning for the elections in May as have other parties including Reform UK. The government has stated in the past two weeks that the local elections will definitely go ahead.
Indeed Colin UKIP got us the vote but has failed on all counts since.
Reading these comments, Colin. The Voters, at least, ARE coming together!
It may be worth mentioning that Jonathan Sumption recently wrote some very interesting “Reith Lectures” about the subversion of parliamentary sovereignty by the Supreme Court, judicial review, employment of Human Rights legislation etc to undermine Executive decision-making, in short “Rule by the Judges”. Worth reading, should still be available in bookshops.
Which media would you expect to side with freedom? No major names spring to my mind.
Which member of our Cringing Conservative Cabinet would you expect to side with freedom? No major names spring to mind. There are none in the Labour, Green, LibDims, either.
You’re right, none in the cabinet, but quite few on the back benches, who when it comes to it will say one thing and do another, and melt away like they normally do. This country’s voters will have to heap one almighty electoral humiliation on Johnson and his authoritarian government in May 2021, before they sit up and take notice. Hopefully by which time it will be too late for them. There has never been a better time to vote for an alternative party, and get a result.
Lord Sumption is quite correct in pointing out the draconian lockdown measures taken are a threat to liberal democracy. Although, some of us consider that it was already under siege before covid came along!
Unfortunately, whilst polls claim that over half the population accept the necessity of the Governments lockdown measures there is little hope of imminent relaxation of the diktats. We certainly cannot expect the MSM to change tack either.
With this level of public support no wonder the Government are confidently going ahead with local elections!
The MSM wont change tack, why would they when the government is their chief financial contributor these days. They need all the money they can get so they wont be kicking back any time soon and the longer it lasts the more ads they can squeeze in.
Viv, I read this on Monday. I share your disbelief at the lack of response from the channels, that at one time, would have taken up the debate! I knew as I read it that, as with all Lord Sumption’s commentaries, there would be absolute truism and total common sense. There will be no debate because the platforms that should be open to such wisdom as Lord Sumption proposes are closed, totally and utterly. They have all been muzzled by Government decree. To mitigate this wanton destruction of our once ‘free press’ and visual media, Government has thrown huge sums of money at these ‘outlets’ by purchasing space for endless mind-crushing advertising, designed solely to silence the populace and suppress protest!
Lord Sumption still commands a ‘token gesture’ platform because of who he is and the position he once held! The likes of Peter Hitchens, Richard Littlejohn and possibly one or two others are allowed to have their say but…..the chances of any other scientific voice or indeed any voice from the outer ether being given a hearing or for any real-time debate being permitted in the mainstream domain is very small indeed. This Government has stitched up the airwaves and the printed media good and tight. The coup is almost complete!
Do you not think that the face muzzles are symbolic of us all being gagged and silenced. Its probably a private joke among TPTB as they kill themselves laughing at all the stupid sheeple who wear face nappies even when not forced to,. and go along with all this s$$t. I just had a look at https://backtonormal.org.uk/ and was shocked how way ahead of other countries UK was in jab uptake,
Am I alone in thinking that matters will only take a turn for the better when the wise, talking heads are brought together in a political vehicle designed around their talents, each with their own specialism, be it law, media, politics, etc?
To me it’s a project management issue, which isn’t as silly as it sounds because it’s all about reducing the chances of failure.
I still think the vehicle is the Reform party but it’ll come to nothing until the other heavyweights find a setting there they can work with and pull together.
Indeed Mary, I see them as a badge of compliance and wonder how many really believe the stated reasons for wearing them. Too many also eager to have an effectively untested vaccine, which has already killed a few and made many more ill. We have yet to see the longer term effects.
Same with other government initiative such as the Green Crappery; all of which give government unprecedented control over us.
