Finally: no more nuclear power for the Germans!

An era is going to end today. More on this below. First, here’s what people will see when they go to buy their weekend papers: “Newspaper headlines: ‘King proud of Harry’ and nurses’ strike reaction” (link).

Well, Coronation news are now ‘A Thing’ for the Westminster MSM. It’s only three more weeks until that date, after all, and having Royals on the front page serves two aims: to make the New Elite thoroughly fed up with the Monarchy while we peasants can be kept even more ignorant because obviously there’s no space or time to write about more pressing issues. Oh – there are the nurses going to keep on striking. Well, that’s important, innit, because we all can become ill.

Today is an important date. It’s the end of the ‘nuclear era’ – in Germany. This will have inevitable consequences for us as well: Germany is switching off their three remaining nuclear power stations. It’s what the German Green Party has campaigned on, and now, as government coalition partner, they’re doing it.

Our papers haven’t quite got round to writing about this but it’s been reported elsewhere. The BBC did pick it up in their report early this morning (link) so it’s really happening. But don’t worry: everything will be fine and there will be enough energy to go round because the minister said so (machine translated):

“Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) and representatives of red-green governed federal states give the all-clear. “Energy security in Germany is and remains guaranteed,” says Habeck.” (paywalled link, in German)

Why not: the Germans have managed to keep their gas storages reasonably full, they’re going to build more bird shredders and thanks to globull warming the winters will be so mild that nobody needs to switch their heating on. Wasn’t the winter just gone a perfect example? Meanwhile, they still have their polluting coal fired power stations … until 2030.

Nothing could exemplify better the hypocrisy of those Greens. Energy production and supply for Germans has been nicely outsourced: Poland exports their coal-generated electricity to Germany while France exports their nuclear-generated electricity. How green is that! How satisfying to parade around the world, claiming to be the most CO2-free country while letting other countries do the dirty work.

Moreover, there will be more bird shredders. Allegedly, the German aim to build 3-4 of them every day, probably until they run out of countryside. I wonder if they’ll face the same bottlenecks as we do. In ‘Tallbloke’s Talkshop” we read a few days ago about a “‘Damning’ report calls for major National Grid changes to prevent UK missing key wind power targets” (link) – and that’s just for transmitting wind energy.

There’s one other worrying item which hasn’t made it yet into the Anglosphere ‘news’. The ‘green’ coalition is now going to stop nuclear research by reducing it to some ‘also-ran’ department outsourced across their ministries (machine translated):

“In the future, nuclear research should no longer be part of the central research projects of the Federal Government. This is evident from a letter from the State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics, Patrick Graichen, to several federal ministries.” (paywalled link, in German)

That makes sense: if one doesn’t run nuclear power stations, why would one need to continue research, concentrated in one place? It can be ‘outsourced’ internally, correct? For general research there’s always France … But let’s not be too harsh on our German Green Friends. After all, competition on the world energy markets in case of a cruel winter is neither here nor there. Their peasants, just as we hear, will pay through the nose to heat their homes.

Btw, just as here in the UK, the installation of heatpumps is another important green policy over there. However, for some obscure reasons it’s not happening as nicely as the politicians demand. There are the little niggles about a huge lack of engineers to actually install them. And then there’s money, which people simply don’t have, not even in ‘rich Germany’. They are struggling just as we do, described in this report on UK ‘difficulties’:

“Rollout of £150m heat pump scheme branded ’embarrassing’ after installation target missed – The government offered vouchers to help people pay to replace boilers with heat pumps but critics say most people can’t afford them “subsidised or not”.” (link)

Who could possibly have foreseen that! How dare the plebs not comply when there are lovely hand-outs from the taxpayer! Well, it seems the New Elites can be oblivious, cushioned as they are from the hard reality all those of us are facing as we struggle on the fabulous median income – now around £32,000 for the UK.

Often overlooked in arguments is that this number implies that a whole lot of people have to get by on less than yon £32,000. After all, that’s why nurses and junior doctors are on strike. Still, it’s another glaring example for the economic illiteracy prevailing amongst the New Elite which is pushing yon green Net Zero dream.

While the Germans have taken another step into the ‘green’ future we might like to ponder this pronouncement: “Communism is Soviet power plus the electrification of the whole country”, by a certain Mr Lenin. The international watermelons are pushing their modern interpretation of ‘communism’ in their zeal to ‘electrify’ their countries, overlooking the simple fact that this ‘electrification’ is running into the realities imposed by physics and by a global economy. When did facts ever matter to ideologues …

That’s all I have for today. At least, unlike the Germans, we have a Coronation to look forward to and so don’t have the time to worry about electricity supply, not for the next three weeks. Have a good weekend.
