Unelected, unaccountable, but setting the political agenda: the MSM

 

Yesterday’s spectacle in the HoC demonstrated again how far our representatives are removed from real life. Virtue-signalling reigned supreme. Yes, the chamber was full, for the first time since Lockdown started last year. Yes, they attacked BJ. Yes, there were some good speeches. No, I didn’t watch the whole lot. I dipped in and out: I needed to keep my sanity intact. Today’s papers have reports and photos, e.g. here. The Great, Green and Good, i.e. the 3G, outcompeted each other in shedding crocodile tears and breast-beating.

Ever since Kabul ‘fell’, the MSM have prepared the foundation for this spectacle. Their ‘reporters’ and opinion piece writers have done sterling work. Much of that ‘work’ was simply grabbed from social media, so no fact checks. Sometimes I was reminded of slobbering hounds ravenous for a horror story, any horror story. It’s as if they were greedy for images such as those we remember from the time ISIS captured towns and cities in Iraq. 

The reporters ‘on the ground’ told us how everybody was scared, about people – mostly males – running, not for their lives but to get onto an airplane, any airplane. We were told that the Afghans hadn’t fought, that they didn’t want to fight – after all, that’s what the US President said and he should know, shouldn’t he!

Suddenly we also heard about the massive corruption in that country – as if this was a revelation! Well, it must have been for our intrepid reporters relying on social media for their work, but surely those of our officials, military or involved with handing out aid must have known! Was anyone in the MSM interested before Kabul ‘fell’? No, they weren’t.

Yesterday’s session in the HoC showed that now it’s only about ‘moral duty’. “We” must take in Afghan refugees – the number is irrelevant because “we” are morally responsible. This is what the MPs demanded. This is what Ms Patel promised. This is what the government will do – and everything will be totally unbureaucratic. This was the main theme in the MSM ever since Kabul ‘fell’ on August 15th 2021. This is how the ‘opinion’ manufactured in the MSM newsrooms drives politics. This is why yesterday’s spectacle was a sham, a democratic figleaf.

Thanks to the MSM campaign, driven by their lefty ‘diversity’ ideology, no debate about immigration will be had. No mention must be made about possible terrorists. You can be certain, should terrorist acts happen, that no blame will be attached to the MSM or to the MPs, to someone like Ms May who wailed angrily about how “we” betrayed all those Afghan girls and women. 

Why didn’t she, why didn’t the usual Labour suspects, propose a strict quota for women and girls? After all, such quota have long been used by Labour, to create their ‘all-women shortlists’ for elections, so it must be ‘a good thing’!  All of a sudden though we hear that women and girls will be given preference (link, paywalled). Better not ask how they can get to the airport when they’re not allowed out of their homes under Taliban rule.

They were talking about taking in 20,000 Afghans. This is of course in addition to those intrepid channel-crossing illegal migrants. I bet that anyone who doesn’t look as if they’re coming from sub-Saharan Africa will declare themselves to be an Afghan. Never mind the Patel-noises that dinghy people won’t get asylum (link, paywalled) – we know how her strong words translate into reality!

There’s one tiny piece missing in all this. Not a word has been said in our MSM about who got us into this mess in the first place. His name wasn’t mentioned in the HoC. It is of course Tony Blair. He has gone totally AWOL, which is strange because the Left ought to praise him. After all, didn’t he join in in order to make Afghanistan a democracy, to change their society into a place where girls and women could flourish? Surely he ought to be at the forefront of lefty demands such as somehow paying recompense to the Taliban, no?

There’s more and worse: after washing their hands off Biden – the one whom they’ve proposed as ‘saviour’ to rescue the USA and the world from Trump – the MSM opinion makers are taking up BJ’s illusions of grandeur. He believes it’s for him, the current leader of the G7, to replace Biden who clearly isn’t a Leader of the free world any longer. You couldn’t make it up.

One lie was refuted yesterday, by those MPs who have served in Afghanistan. It was the lie which has swamped the international MSM after Biden told journalists that the Afghans ‘didn’t want to fight’. Of course that made the headlines, from Washington and New York to London and Europe. It was a lie, a slur, but we heard only now that nearly 70,00 Afghan soldiers died fighting the Taliban. Well, it wasn’t on twitter, so how could our intrepid reporters know that! Better believe the New York Times!

I conclude with the observation that, regardless of what else will now happen, the topic has been set by the MSM who feed their ‘concerns’ to each other and to the MPs, not least by publishing essays from such eminent former mandarins like Sir Mark Sedwill – we wrote about that here. It’s this cabal of Westminster denizens, the cluster of virtue-signalling champions, the ‘3G’, who have set the agenda for the future: ‘refugees good’ because: “Afghanistan and moral duty”. Any debate on this issue will now be declared to be inhumane and heartless.  

For us peasants it’s yet another instance of shut up and pay up. I wonder if perhaps a certain Mr Blair can be asked to give 50% of his accumulated wealth for the good cause of Afghan refugees – a ‘good cause’ which he created by his actions in 2001. Cheri will surely agree – it’s to help girls and women, after all. Isn’t it?
