The curtain rises for a new ‘Westminster theatre Production’

Well, that was exciting, wasn’t it! It was if you were a Westminster ‘journalist’, desperate to come up with a different piece of gossip or a quip to be quoted across the meejah. For the rest of us, outside of that charmed circle, it was predictable once yon ‘Big Dog’ had withdrawn.

Mind you, we have to hand it to ‘P4P’. She kept the excitement going until the last minute – literally, withdrawing only a few minutes before the 2pm deadline yesterday. So Sunak is the new PM, to be given the task later this morning after La Truss has officially resigned in her audience with King Charles.

Unsurprisingly, Sunak’s move to No 10 is the headline in all the morning’s print editions (link), with the broadsheets using the ominous quote from his very first speech where he tells the Tory Party to “Unite or Die”. Good luck with that when the Westminster ‘columnists’ are trying to display their ‘insider knowledge’ by quoting every utterance from whichever Tory MP they have on their speed dial, busily stirring up trouble for the new PM.

Disappointed BJ acolytes are now apparently demanding that yes, we need a GE because ‘Sunak has no mandate’. These are the same MPs who were fine with supporting Truss because that’s what their own BJ did and never mind her also not having ‘a mandate’. I’m sure they’ll be busily sniping from the backbenches.

‘Unity’ isn’t important when one can be ‘in the news’, displaying a sad-face death wish, according to which it’s better all – i.e. the Tory Party – die as well as oneself. After all, how else to get onto TV and Radio or into the columns of the MSM unless one can display one’s erudition and insider knowledge by knifing the latest PM! One’s own coffers need to be filled up with all those stipends, for the rainy days to come after that GE.

Working for the good of the Party, never mind the good of the whole country? Don’t be silly – that’s not why the current crop of MPs – of all parties – have entered politics!

That’s also not why the current crop of ‘political editors’, ‘political correspondents’ and ‘political columnists’ have entered their job. They are after clickbait and want to display their ‘insider knowledge’ as well and never mind how puerile their ‘contributions’ are.

There’s a breathless report in the DT, written as if ‘for posterity’ but sadly displaying the sniffy, puerile attitude now so common in the MSM. After describing how ‘Sunak entered the 1922 Committee Room’, accompanied by one of his MP supporters and a former SpAd, we’re informed that RS went to the Tory Party headquarters:

“[…] where he was greeted by jubilant supporters. Among them was Matt Hancock, the former health secretary, who stood at the front of the group welcoming the new leader. He faced much mockery on social media as it appeared he was blanked by Mr Sunak.” (paywalled link)

Oh dear. That’s ‘news’ … ! So let’s hear it for the anti-social meejah who provide so much important ‘news’ to our MSM. Never mind that they look more and more like fortune tellers or like courtiers showing their importance by ‘being in the know’, their knowledge to be fed to us peasants drip-by-drip from a great height.

Someone please tell them that No 10, the HoC and indeed Westminster is not like the Kremlin sixty years ago whenKremlinologists were studying and analysing the political significance of who stood where on photos published in the Soviet press. There ‘s more – this is ‘history in the making’:

“Once inside, Mr Sunak delivered his first televised speech to the nation as its new leader. Perhaps he was tired – the stress of the previous few days having been too much to him. But his performance was strangely robotic. At 84 seconds, his victory oration was shorter even than Ms Truss’s 89-second resignation speech. To make things worse, he lingered uncomfortably at the lectern after he had finished, giving the impression he believed the speech was being pre-recorded rather than going out live. During the leadership campaign, some of Mr Sunak’s detractors had claimed he could not gain the affection of the public because he is too slick. Perhaps this lacklustre speech was designed to kill off this criticism. But it will have reminded many Tory members why it was they had supported the charismatic Boris Johnson to the end.” (paywalled link)

Good grief! Are the Westminster ‘news hounds’ now reduced to measuring the time a speech took, seeing significance in how the speaker looked and moved? The strange thing is that none of those ‘correspondents’ analysed all those BJ and SAGE speeches like that, when we were bombarded with their utterances during the covid years. Not that they ever questioned the content of those now ancient performances.

However – the reference to the ‘charismatic Johnson’ made me wonder if our beloved MSM would rather have BJ as PM because he delivered all those lovely PR images and always gave them some quotable quips.

Here’s another thing: isn’t it odd how suddenly this country’s economic misery has become the fault of ‘Trussonomics’ – how long was she PM, again? 45 days? Was the economy fine before she stepped into No 10? Now it’s going to be Sunak’s baby – but BJ has had nothing to do with this situation at all! Never mind his Lockdown policies which were supported to the hilt by Sir Kneeler and his party. Never mind BJ’s ‘undying’ support for yon war in yon mid-continental country which has been and is costing us billions.

This latest episode in the self-immolation of the Tory Party, aided and abetted by the Westminster MSM, again demonstrates perfectly that we’re watching a theatre performance where politics for the good of our country don’t matter because quips and schoolboy witticisms trump all that dry stuff. Of course, the excitement of blood on the floor, of back-stabbing and threats are even better.

Still, there’s Sunak’s selection of his cabinet to look forward to, providing more fuel to the Westminster gossip machine. In the headline of their leading article the DM is already hinting that the Party’s beloved Ben Wallace might be ‘out’ (link) – how awful!

I’ll leave you with news that must delight Whitehall:  for the time being, their ‘Mandarin of Mandarins’, Simon Case, will stay as Cabinet Secretary (paywalled link). Sunak obviously has learned from Truss’ fatal error, i.e. the sacking of the Treasury Top Mandarin. Phew. All will be well: Whitehall Continuity is secure!

The rest, from the new PM all the way down to the Westminster MSM’s editorial offices, is just theatre for us peasants. I wonder if it ever occurs to that lot that we peasants, working to create taxes, don’t have the time to be glued to the TVs and smartphones, 24/7, to which yon Westminster cabal is so addicted?
