The ultimate Fear Porn: Nuclear War Brinkmanship
It is very unfortunate, isn’t it, when the print editions of our MSM become obsolete within hours of having been printed. Take a look at the usual place (link): the headlines scream about Russia having attacked Poland. This compilation was published around 2.30am. Have a look at the headline in the print edition of The Times with which the BBC leads their compilation:
And now, a few hours later, the BBC blithely announces that, sorry, it wasn’t Russia (link). Biden said so in Bali, and the Polish government now called for Poles to remain calm. Oh dear. Meanwhile, the online editors have been busy at their screens and so, at the time of writing, both the DT (link) and the Times (link) online pages tell us that, actually, Biden said it wasn’t Putin. Phew. A pity their print papers weren’t so cautious.
Still, it’s instructive to keep this little snippet of reporting – for the record. Under the headline “‘Unlikely’ Poland missile fired from Russia, says Biden – World leaders meet to discuss two killed near Ukrainian border” we now read in The Times (my emphasis):
“The US president said that “preliminary information” had put in doubt whether the missile had come from Russia but that investigations would continue. However, an unnamed senior US intelligence official blamed the Kremlin for the stray missiles that landed in Poland.” (link, paywalled)
Do take note of how The Times wriggles out of their blunder, informing us that ‘an unnamed senior US intelligence officer’ blamed ‘the Kremlin’. Without this quote they couldn’t justify their earlier ‘it were the roooshans’ headlines. And anyway, surely such ‘senior’ source is better informed than sleepy Uncle Joe B?
Usually, the description ‘unnamed’ is dropped when the papers like The Times quote their ‘senior sources’. I cannot tell by how much the online editors have prettied up their texts to calm things down, Here’s a quote from the DT’s online edition:
“The Pentagon, White House and State Department said they could not immediately corroborate the reports, and were gathering information from Poland. A State Department spokesman said the reports that it was a Russian missile were “incredibly concerning”. He said: “We of course are ready to stand with our Nato allies and partners. But I want to again be very clear, we do not want to get ahead of hypotheticals. We do not know what has happened yet.” (paywalled link)
So this morning the ‘officials’ don’t know what happened, but ‘senior sources’ “knew” last night that it was Russia. And what to make of that sanctimonious claim, of not ‘getting ahead of hypotheticals’! Didn’t they all open their gobs with said ‘hypotheticals’ as soon as could be?
The G20 were in full ‘we stand against Putin’ flow, the news agencies were in ‘full outcry mode’, NATO ‘sources’ seem to have dropped hints about invoking Article 5 of the NATO Treaty which means that they have to respond to an attack on a member state. It was brinkmanship of the very finest caliber … or should that be ‘Kalibr’?
It is doubtful if the News agency reporters will learn from this shambles. They must present the most headline-worthy ‘news’ to their superiors. It is equally doubtful if our own MSM editors will learn. They are, after all, the propaganda arm of the government and had to create the mood for a more heavy intervention by our own Armed Forces.
Having been offline for most of yesterday I was blissfully unaware of this scramble for producing a proper ‘reason’ for “War with Russia”. The contrast between the print front pages this morning and the online ones speak for themselves.
They are a brilliant object lesson for the way “news” are being manipulated, the ‘modern way’, where nothing much is known, never mind being verified, provided there’s a ‘senior source’ somewhere. After all, clicks on online articles and sold papers bring in the money, and one has to be ‘Teh First’ with news to get yon clicks.
Meanwhile the Russian (boo-hiss) News Agency TASS this morning writes that
“The missile that fell in eastern Poland was launched by the Ukrainian military, the Associated Press news agency reported on Wednesday, citing US officials. The preliminary data indicate that a Ukrainian projectile was launched to intercept a Russian missile targeting a Ukrainian energy infrastructure site, the news agency reported. As the Associated Press reported, this information runs counter to the previous statements by US officials that allegedly a Russian missile had fallen on Polish territory.” (link)
Well, yeah, right – but it’s still the fault of Putin because he shelled the poor, innocent Ukraine so they had to defend themselves … The interesting question is though: the debris found in Poland was ‘of Russian origin’, wasn’t it. It was this which had the USA’s ‘unnamed senior intelligence officer’ make that claim of a Russian attack on Poland, exemplifying what brinkmanship means.
Clearly, poor innocent Ukraine had to defend herself using old Russian ammunition, right? Clearly, poor innocent Ukraine needs more western air defence systems, correct? And accidents with old weapons systems happen. The current ‘we only defended ourselves’ excuse is the clever way for Kiev to wriggle out of any accusation that they might have fired that missile deliberately. After all, why would they do such a thing!
Let’s please not ask why those modern Western air defense systems weren’t in place to defend Lvov which is only the city to which the Ukrainian government keeps fleeing when things get too hot in Kiev. We can however rest assured that NATO countries, that our own MoD chief, Ben Wallace, will hand over more of our latest air defence systems.
So all is well, innit. Our wonderful MSM chief editors won’t apologise for increasing the anxiety of us peasants that we might see the start of a nuclear war. Keeping us in a permanent state of fear and anxiety has now become their business model.
And then they wonder why ever fewer people buy their papers, why ever fewer people watch their ‘news’ on TV. All this was however a lovely way of deflecting from ‘news’ on tomorrow’s Autumn Budget. Aren’t we lucky to have such brilliant MSM …
Sounds like some sort of ‘False Flag’ stunt to me. Haven’t we been told of Russians running away and leaving armaments behind?
So now it is reported on the BBC at least that according to the General Secretary of NATO, the likelihood is that the missile that struck a border village of Poland and killed two people yesterday wasn’t in fact one that was fired by the Russian military, but one that was fired by Ukrainian Air Defence forces, and even then, it was accidental and not intentional. Therefore, it is a pretty good job that we don’t accept everything that the Ukrainian President says at face value otherwise probably by now Britain and the rest of NATO would have been up to our necks in this totally unnecessary war, with boots on the ground and goodness knows what. After all he has tried to get western nations embroiled in this conflict on many occasions to provide either war planes or NATO air defence systems which would have resulted in Russian fighter jets being shot down. And I think probably it was a good thing that Boris Johnson is no longer prime minister of this country bearing in mind the close relationship he had with the Ukrainian President. The last thing we would have needed was Johnson getting excitable and over-reacting. It is now high time that the thoroughly useless organisation called the United Nations officially stepped in and brought an early end to this war. As Winson Churchill once famously said ‘better jaw jaw, than war war. How about Sunak doing something useful, getting off his backside and making an approach to the UN and suggest this.
And now Ben Wallace has said, and you couldn’t make it up if you tried, that the missile that landed in Poland yesterday even though it was a Ukrainian one, was still the fault of the Russians because they were letting off missiles off all over the place. We really do need to be rid of MP’s/Ministers of his amateurish calibre, as his unwise remarks could get this country into all types of international bother. I would be worried if Wallace was a bog standard parish councilor, let alone a government minister. Heaven help us…….

Online media allows them to track which stories, and types of story more broadly, we click on. They ‘adjust’ the news accordingly. The goal is advertising revenue. The New York Times noticed an article about racism was popular (high click rate) and it was was money, not reality, that led to a sudden proliferation of racism articles. That the picture they painted was untrue, that it stoked a breakdown in race relations, was of no concern. Similarly with its Brit bashing. It’s profitable. It’s not entirely true, therefore, that the media shape opinion. Readers play a part in shaping news. It’s an interactive dance that spirals ever further into surreality.
Ukrainian S-300 anti-aircraft missile malfunctions was never going to be a profitable headline. Biden’s correction to Russia being the source would not have been prominent but for the alarm at possible WWIII. Retractions and corrections generally are buried in obscure places lest the media outlet’s credibility suffer. For once, they had to give it prominence.
Meanwhile, the nation’s most pressing concern is Dominic Raab allegedly throwing tomatoes (from a Pret a Manger sandwich no less). Oh that that was all we had to worry about.

Ukraine fired at incoming Russian missiles and the S-300 missed its target then fell inside Polish territory – and no access to the subsequent cover up enquiry. It was Ruskies what done it.
The only thing I’m afraid of-or rather enraged beyond words- is the evil cabal who are driving all this, the fear and gullibility of the public and the MSM who aid and abet all this.
Indeed Mary the “fear and gullibility of the public” is as big a problem as that cabal, maybe more so.

A German wag (there do exist some …) asked in his comment post, loosely translated, if this was ‘Zelensky’s Gleiwitz Moment’, referring to the fabricated Polish ‘attack’ on the Radio Station Gleiwitz which Hitler used as reason to kick off WWII …
As the missile fell on Poland, can we assume that it missed it’s intended target and if so why?
But what was the intended target? Surely the Ukrainians weren’t shelling Poland! Surely not – why would they!
For the players of nuclear brinkmanship this doesn’t matter – and i can give them another ‘reason’ for supporting their ‘it was Putin’ claim: Russia, after all, has run out of missiles since March, so they’re now desperately using those old, soviet-style ones …
I really would like to know why we are being given this incessant fear porn. Can the Autumn Budget really be this bad?
